You could put a lot of scrappy 2 1/2" strips end to end. Lay then side by side and press them together. Roll up as you go until you get to the middle. Cut the end free, so you are ready for your jelly roll race quilt, with both ends ready to sew. Add odd bits like hst's or contrast squares etc between strips as you like. Do you make piano key borders in a big roll, just sew up bits at the machine for leaders and enders. and sew onto the end as you get some done. Try kitchen paper rolls if you worry about germs?

I also like making a jelly roll quilts, but I when I finish a quilt and if there is 2 1/2 strips left over I just sew into strips and make rolls. After a few quilts I sew the rolls into long strips then make a jelly roll quilt. It's more to keep my strips neat and clean not all over the place. It might take me 10 min to start and work on a few strips but it's not all at once and so I dont get bored. I love the little rolls of asst fabric I do sew them on tape but the way you do it it will save time by not having to take out the papers. Thank you

Do you have bigger scraps, fat quarters left over or smaller cuts from yardage, not big enough really to put in projects? Can you get 5" or 10"? Prep 5 and cut strips each day or so? You can make your own scrappy pre-cuts. A fat q can make 2 layer cake squares 4 charm squares or a number of half jelly roll strips. Can you get to 42? Pick your colour ways? Cut the strips ready and break them down later when you want them for something. Make a baby quilt, an I-spy, or make some grab and sew kits for later. Write yourself a note on how much you might need to finish it, put it in and tick it off as you get it? A fat q may give you enough strips to bind or border a small quilt, you may be able to use that "ugly" fabric to piece a back with fat q's. Do you have bits of background? Can you cut generic sashing, add it to a kit as you decide to use it later, or just cut yardage scraps for binding, decide where to put it later? A J R strip can be squares, potato chip blocks, flying geese, log cabin strips, or whatever you want later. 5" is 2 JR strips or charm squares, or smaller squares, 5 by 10, whatever you need, 10 " × 2 layer cakes can be a really big quilt or you can cut 9 squares, or 4 squares or strips, though 10 1/2" will give you 3×3 1/2" strips/squares. Think about how quick some bigger squares will come together? And you'll have off-cuts to cut for sample blocks etc... do you cut off long selvedge strips? You can tie bundles with them? Do you like the idea of mini-charm leaders and enders, with 4 1/2" alternate squares? Have fun piaying and deciding what works for you. What do you do with orphan blocks? Line them for cushion fronts? Tote bag pockets? Frame them for size in a memory quilt? Put them in a strip set of the same depth? Cut quilt widths from sashing strips and add an orphan block, to get them used up?
