To be fair they do not need consumer level advertising. GEEP is a multinational entity dealing with exactly what he said, IT and telecom asset management and recycling. These are the guys that gets a number of workstations that all have to be wiped of any proprietary software or projects and made secure for resale or recycling, smaller companies that does not have in-house IT departments with time on their hands to do such a thing instead contract such tasks to other corporations, such as GEEP. In fact, that they showed a private individual the door is probably pretty good corporate advertisment when it comes to the security of the asset management. Yes they do sell things once they are done processing them, but again such assets are only sold to other corporate entities, becoming a retailer of their own aimed at private citizens would in most cases be viewed as unprofessional by the companies that currently are their client base.

I go to pick it up and, through the perspex side panel, I can see my titan is missing, with some bare card in the slot. Also... My ram sticks were swapped out. I pointed it out and the guy gets a thick stick with a nail in it from under the counter. 'Calm down. I'm just going to call the guy I'm working for...' 'What? You think you can scare me?' 'No. I'm a security consultant and I'm working with CID (British police, plain clothes) they are all in the pub two streets away. I figure I could get half a dozen of them down here in ten minutes to explain things to you, slowly. On the record.' He dug out my ram and titan, and gave me my system back. I got a new 3TB HD, 500GB SSD, a knock off Geforce 640 and 8 GB of ddr3 ram for free... and they did a good job cleaning it.

I think this is a point a lot of people miss complaining about them. I worked for my university in college and even stuff marked for recycling had strict rules of where it had to go and how it was stored and was still under asset management. About the only things that could disappear in the middle of the night were peripherals. Everything else was tracked. A lot of this is various state and federal laws that require certain procedures for data destruction as well as “recycling”. Because of that these contracts are gravy trains for who ever has them.

The rules should've allowed using the internet from whatever computer you're able to build, so there might be an incentive to try putting together a cheap system really quickly and then using the internet on the cobbled-together computer to build an actually good computer. In fact, actually perhaps even start without having cell phones altogether - if you want to be able to call someone, better pony up for a cheap phone and pre-paid SIM, or beg/borrow/steal off random passerbys.

I'd be willing to bet that when the guy from geep says they're a secure facility, he means that they're dealing with machines that contain sensitive information, and proprietary information. Considering the volume of machines it sounds like they work on, I'd be willing to bet they've got machines from financial institutions, insurance companies, and other organizations where even small data breaches go public in a big way. We see evidence that data privacy is a concern to them with the, "WIPE PASS" sticker Linus points out at the end of the video. It suggest's that not only did they use something like dban on the drive, but that they also tried data recovery tools on it afterwards. What I don't understand, however, is why Linus didn't simply ask, "Do you have any _clients_ that work with the public?"

Agreed. People are here shitting on them for not selling to Linus, and how the mom and pop shop ended up with one of their PCs. Chances are they sold it in wholesale to a client, who then sold it to the mom and pop shop. They don't want to risk some random dude wandering around their warehouse, probably both for liability/safety reasons for Linus, safety of data since it's possible he'd be in an area with machines being returned with data on them/hard drives with data on them. He also handled the 2nd call pretty well for "hey I'm outside the building even though you told me earlier you can't sell to me, can I look around?"

Not really. When you order a product off Amazon or Ebay, it's usually coming from either a self employed repair tech, a family run brick and mortar store or a warehouse that big stores and companies unload their old gear at. If anything the internet has enabled mass retail for everybody. We had a computer store here for nearly 30 years run by the same family, when internet ordering became a mass thing their stock got really good and really cheap while the owners were able to save up a generous retirement fund. One of the owners upon closing shop opened his own computer shop in an adjacent building, not as neat and tidy as the other shop was but they have a great selection from mid 90s to modern day computer stuff crammed in a small store with comparable prices to Amazon. They even used the old stores policy that if you print a copy of their 1990s website style listing and bring it in, you get a discount that depends on generation of the part. Sadly what has killed brick and mortar computer shops is quality of their work. I made a lot of money in the last 10-15 years fixing local stores screw ups. I may crack shots at Best Buy for loading their customers computers with bloatware that gets in the way of real protection mechanisms but local shops have done some real numbers on some of my clients computers. There never really was a lot of reputable shops, the internet has been pretty good at driving the less reputable out of business.
