That mechanical pencil idea is brilliant. I can think of many uses for a tool like that. Tanks!

The use of a mechanical pencil as a material feeder is genius!

Thanks for the nice comment, Cody. Rivets have been something that I have been working on for a long time. I plan to make a video explaining a few more methods. I even will be using an alternate method on the Baneblade to show how to install very small rivets for the fine details. More to come, please stay tuned!

I’ve been using dabs of thick glue applied with different sized pointed tools. Once painted, it looks much more realistic than a big knob sticking out.

It's also good way to make mushrooms for fantasy figures. Same method with slightly larger plastic

Thank you very much I've been trying for about 2 months now on different styles rivets and different things I can use as rivets. you are totally awesome in my book. Thank you again. Cody

Holy crap man, that's really close to the real thing. If you would melt the backsides after inserting them, you would actually be riveting. I've seen people use very small pins for this. They have the same domed shape on top, but I'm not sure if you can get them as small as you got them. I've always used a belt hole punch to cut very small circles out of a thin sheet of plastic. They look pretty good, but they're flat on top. It did save me from drilling a gazillion small holes though. :)

great idea, I have been working on my own ideas including copper wire in a hand vice and hammer the end over to form the rivet. This idea is so much better and quicker, I will be going out tomorow to buy plastic rod and a propelling pencil. thanks david

I have seen those. 1mm seems hard to find. I purchased some 2mm, but thought they were a little too big. I also have had a hard time finding half round ones. Almost everything I find is faceted, so it looks like a little jewel. If you find a good supplier let me know! You are right this method is time consuming, but I really like the results.

This is a neat way but pretty time consuming, I've started using 1 - 2mm half round beads search on eBay really cheap and stick to styrene and can be painted.

Great idea using the pencil. You can get different diameter pencils so other rivet sizes can be done. I use the hot tip of soldering iron to heat the rod, without touching the iron tip.

my mechanical pencil I converted to hold a tig welding rod that fitted and cut down to the length of the lead and gets used as a scribe another one has the point sharpened flat like a blade. Great ideas for the rivets I do ish the same but use alloy tube but process is the same. You could make acro props miniature with U section on ends to keep 2 parts in line.

I use an incense stick burns, nice and even and forms a perfect dome on the rod.

About your glue problem. Try applying glue from other side, after you have inserted it into a hole. Better yet try plastic weld types of plastic glue and just touch on that inside side of a model.

Watching this about 7 years late. Anyone that sees this after me looking for rivet ideas there is a website called greenstuff world that sells a mould to make various size and shaped rivets and bolts out of greenstuff for and 15 dollars or so. Might want to check it out. There are vids of it here on youtube too
