In this video, Prof. John Ahr demonstrates a simple technique for applying a scratch finish texture to any metal surface. This finish is especially good for jewelry pieces that receive a lot of wear.
Now, I know what you're thinking. You're probably saying to yourself "How hard is it to scratch a metal object." Not hard at all! That's what makes this finish so great. But, if you follow the steps in this video you'll probably be a lot happier with the results that you produce.
The trick to getting this finish to look right is to start with a polished piece. If you don't start with a polish on your item, the finish will just look lazy and sloppy.
You'll need four different sandpaper grits to work with. Specifically, you'll need 600, 320, 100 and 80 grits. Use them in this order. So, it's like your working backwards from the way that you normally prepare an item for polishing.
There is a technique to applying this finish. You have to start with your finest grit of sandpaper. You want to smack your piece with the sandpaper, pull to make a scratch and then lift up the sandpaper. Repeat this in every direction until you stretch the entire surface of the piece. Then, move to the next courser grit and repeat the process.
If you would like to know how to sand a piece to prepare it for polishing, the OJA playlist includes such a video.

The OJA has a video on the Principles of Polishing. You'll find it in the OJA playlist on our website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy.com This matte finish looks great contrasted against a shiny one. Plus, this is a great finish for work that is produced using different colors of metal, like mokume gane. Thanks for your support! : )

Love the idea! Tho how do it do this finish on a finished piece? With those polishing or sanding discs??
@OnlineJewelryAcademy

Hi Huskyfluffy, The scratch finish is applied by hand. You apply a uniform finish to your piece first (maybe even polish it), then you follow the steps in the video to apply a scratch finish by hand. Thank you for your ongoing support! : )
