This is the best and most comprehensive instruction video I’ve seen on early extension. I get the occasional period of inconsistent strikes and my pro showed me a video earlier of me losing my spine angle at impact, I’m nearly vertical. He suggested a fix similar to yours Adam, and it’s already working a treat, but your concept of the spine being controlled from both ends, and feel like your chest moves toward the ground is great - taking that to the practise ground tomorrow. Love the format of the videos and relating to what the top players do. Great video, thanks Adam 👍

20 years of golfing. At best an 8 handicap. Played 4 times a week, so many drills. A man told me i had "butt in the water" said it was unfixable. No sense. I realized quickly, it requires a pelvic shift slightly towards the golf ball. This shift, this slight movement, allowed "the strike zone", iow, area the club has to strike the ball in the sweet spot. I don't know how else to say other than make love to your ball. Do not be affraid nor shy with your equipment at the Y. Distance and consistency will wildly improve. For a while i hated shifting my junk toward the ball. Very informative! Ty all

I’ve played golf for 7 months. After about 4 months I went 16 over par. Absolutely buzzing. A few weeks later I’m going round 30 over par! Watched videos of myself and I’m extending so early, it’s destroyed my consistency. Hoping this video will help me get back to some sub-20 scores.

Hi Adam, I have subscribed too your site as I find your instructions so too the point and so easy too understand, I was with a site in America, but they are all for younger golfers with full back swings! I do notice that you do not have a full back swing, so this suits me too a tee, which is around my kind of swing, I am 66 years of age, but still hit the ball well, as long as I hit through the ball towards my intended target I am fine, but the odd time/s I hit at the ball, resulting in me kicking myself for hitting such a bad shot! You are a fabulous coach and I will be looking at all the video's available on your site. Many thanks Adam!

I'm 52, been playing all my life. I am a 4 handicap. For the first time, I took a video of my swing. I was amazed I could hit the ball with all the early extension I had. It is bad. I am working on this drill, but now I am hitting some shots fat, and even shanking a few. I am thinking because I am leaning into the ball, being a bit closer. My good contact strikes are money, so I am going to continue working on it.

Great video, thank you for your explanations. I made great progress during my first year of golf this year (had to stop opening my club face, had to stop my left knee from bending straight forward too much, had to stop locking my wrists too early, had to stop leaning left on my downswing and pulling shots) culminating in my best game ever a couple of months ago, I went round 16 over par and was so happy. All of my progress has been completely undone by this early extension. I’m going to try these at the range tonight.

WOWOW!! Update. I headed to the range this morning with this lesson fresh in my mind. After warming up I began to work as per Adam's instruction and after going through the shanks, some strange shaped shots while I got the feel, suddenly things started to happen. Much better contact, better shaping control, less stress on my back and 10-15% more distance. I think my impact is now a few lines up and I even picked 4 very solid shots off hard sand with my 4 iron. Good lord - currently off 9, lookout scratch... :-) Thank you so much - Dave

Hi Adam, thanks for your encouragement. Had some more time at the range over the weekend and this single piece of advice has been transformative for me. I have never had such quality contact with my longer irons and am now fairly consistently hitting 4 iron 170 - 175m (~190 yards), which is a huge step up for me (from 155m). On one shot, I hit my 8 iron 158m (~170 yards) and almost had an infarction! The downside is that now I have to redo all my club yardages... It's all in the subtle move of my upper body towards the ball on the downswing. Now to put in the hours to properly bed in this swing! Great stuff and thanks again - Dave

Adam, I really like your KZbin instructions -- relatively short, to the point, consistent audio/video quality. Thank you! Now, here is my question: in this video: at your first address, your club's toe is pretty much aligned with the center of the ball. Is it because your actual swing moves outward to have the sweet spot meets the ball? If so, I have the same, or similar tendency. My questions are these: 1) do you address the ball as I observed?; 2) If so, is it okay to adjust the address position of the club head to compensate the tendency? Or, should we keep aiming at the center of the club head until I can hit good shots?

KenpoOjoko good question! Im having the same problem.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 7 жыл бұрын
+KenpoOjoko Thanks, interesting question. I'm not 'aware of it' when I hit, but I do know that I align off the toe. I don't think it makes any difference, assuming you hit the ball solidly. Next time you see a video of the great Bobby Jones check out his address, ball on outside edge of toe. Fuzzy Zoeller addresses dead in the shank! Fifteen majors between the four of us, unfortunately none for you and me. Best, Adam
@KenpoOjoko
@KenpoOjoko 7 жыл бұрын
I see. So I think what you are saying is, in terms of the club face position relative to the ball, it depends and is fine as far as it works. I've seen many KZbin and other instructions that tend to stress positions of your body parts as well as what should be moved and what shouldn't be moved.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 7 жыл бұрын
+KenpoOjoko Yes. Ultimately the ball only reacts to the club (not the body) at impact. Where the club is at address has no affect on the ball, but certainly the more unconventional the address is the more difficult it might be to arrive at a good impact. I haven't found that detailed instruction on what different body parts do in the swing helps people much. My experience is that it usually interferes with good motion, and not 'brain friendly' so to speak. That isn't to say it's never a good idea to teach like that. A friend of mine films students throwing clubs down the range (golf swing & set up, but no ball). It's amazing how athletic and flowing they tend to look, with almost no instruction. I'd encourage you to try to tap in to some of this talent you have. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

I want to say thanks for the video. I am working on this right now with my PGA instructor, and it is tough to teach your body this move. For me it is difficult to get the lateral move, rotational pivot while accomplishing the squeezing effect while trying to be fluid and maintain your club head speed...hope I can get it soon. Thank you.

Best of luck as you work on it. I'd do a fair amount of 1/2 speed practice swings (with and without club) keeping a quiet mind. Try to let things flow and blend, then keep repeating (again, pretty quiet conscious mind). All the best, Adam

Wow it looks like you're hitting off a green. Great video. My bad shot is a toe strike. Snap hook or pull hook with driver.. and I usually hit a straight / right to left shot. Will this video help?

Andrew, Thanks, Mediterra is a great facility. Regards the toe hits, hard to say without seeing you swing, but maintaining body angles is generally good for contact. All the best, Adam

Adam, very interesting video. When you talk about focusing on both ends of the spine, it looks like your head is moving towards the ball. Doesn't that also expose the club's hosel as well? I have struggled with early extension for a long time and know that if corrected, I could significantly improve my ball striking. Many thanks.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Anthony. A lot of great players (Unfortunately I'm not a great player) lower their spine towards the ground a bit as they change direction from backswing to downswing. You're right that it could push the hosel towards the ball, but if the right arm/wrist are bent (compact) coming in it shouldn't be a problem. If you've struggles with early extension just work on these ideas with a 'quiet mind' and try to find that nice balance and fluid motion. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

Hi , great video btw. Is there a tip on how to lower high hands at impact ,as I also have this issue and is related to early extension???
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 7 жыл бұрын
Jon, I'd say it's generally on the same theme as early extension. If you feel there are no predetermining causes (shut face, steep plane etc) then hit some punch shots with short iron (very short finish) and see how low you can get the handle. Best, Adam

If you already bend too much in the backswing, it will be pretty challenging to increase or keep that bend in your downswing.

I agree, in that case the player would need to stay taller in the backswing

Question, do/should these same movements be exactly the same for any club selection? Same for irons or woods?

Guy, Yes, Ideally the same. It would be pretty typical for a little loss of angles with the driver, especially after impact. All the best, Adam

I am 76 now, but I have long lacked the ability to move from impact into a high finish while maintaining the angle of my spine (staying bent at the hips). What I think I am seeing here is that I should not worry too much about turning up into a high finish but should concentrate on keeping my upper body from raising up through impact. When I tried this in my front yard with plastic practice balls, my swing seemed to feel more upright. I have often felt like I had a tendency to raise up too quickly or to not bend over enough to begin with, and I have been told that my swing is pretty flat (even though I am about 6'2" tall). My feeling is that a more upright swing is likely to be more consistent in terms of direction, since the arc of the upright swing would move less from side to side than the arc of a flatter swing. For example, a ferris wheel has no side to side motion, whereas a merry go round has only side to side motion. I think I have often raised up too early (or never bent over enough to begin with). In spite of this I can usually make solid contact and don't have a lot of problems with fat or thin hits. What I do have a problem with is the direction of my shots, especially with my driver. I have a tendency to hit a lot of hooks or pull hooks. When I try to correct this by weakening my grip, I will often hit push fades or even slices. When I try to fine tune it , I can't be sure what the ball will do, which can result in the dreaded two way miss. When I hit the practice balls in my yard, I felt like I stayed bent over until after impact, at which point I could either raise up into a "high finish" or just let the swing come to a stop without ever raising up. I will definitely give this a try on the range and see how it works.

Bob, Thanks. If swing is too upright angle of attack gets steeper, which usually requires some raining through impact. I'd recommend a lot of rehearsals without ball, sometimes in stages. You'll get a feel that you can trust. All the best, Adam

I was always taught to keep level...how is it that if the club is resting near the bottom of the ball at set up and you bend further down on the downswing to utilize the ground that you don't "fat" the shot..why the club doesn't gouge into the ground...unless you then push up which may make you top the ball? Please explain as I am struggling with early extension and a multitude of problems trying to resolve this issue.

Penelope, When the right (trail) wrist is bent (lag) it narrows the circumference of the swing. With lo lag the club can easily dig into the ground. I hope this helps. Best, Adam

adam, i've plagued by this for years and until recently did not know what i was doing. tried this drill and used the idea at golf and it really help. what do you think is the root cause, the early extension seems to be the effect, is there something early in the swing that causes this. thnx steve
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve, glad you had some success. Often the body is trying to re-position the club in the downswing which leads to a loss of body angles. Most commonly a steep swing plane (downswing) and/or a shut clubface usually lead to this. Hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam

adam, thnx for the info and like i said the idea of keeping the chest over the ball and the backside out while making the swing really hit home for me. i had never thought too much about the spine angle except at address, right now i'm making a conscious effort to maintain for as long as needed for the swing and it does work. steve
