The writers wanted the audience to expect the obvious; that Billy was the killer (which he was). But what they didn’t want us to expect was the fact that there were *TWO* killers. That’s the plot twist.

There are actually some clues that there is more than one killer. I definitely figured out that he was in cahoots with someone during the garage scene. And then so many things made more sense…like how he got Drew strung up so fast, etc.

They featured her so prominently in the advertising for the movie and she was the only real "big celebrity" in the cast at that time, so it was a TOTAL shock to see her die in the introduction. You kept thinking she'd escape because she was the star -- instead it was Neve Campbell. So it was a brilliant start to the movie and a good indication that they'd be playing with the old horror movie tropes.

They pretty much show you who the killers are and then they distract you by putting a red herring in, such as the dad but Randy already said it wasn't him for that reason during the video store scene. Most people who know scary movie rules probably wouldn't suspect the boyfriend because it's too obvious and the most obvious is also usually a red herring, which is why this movie is so unique. It makes fun of scary movie tropes while being a scary movie trope. Yes, please continue the series.

The way Wes Craven creates those little things is amazing and brilliant! - I don't know if you caught it or not but the whole last 20-30mins everything that was happening around the house it was perfectly mirroring with what was happening in Halloween lol

Love this movie! The tagline on the poster reads: "Someone has taken their love for scary movies a little too far." The opening scene was on Bravo's 100 Scary Movie Moments. When people saw the opening, they thought Drew Barrymore was going to be the hero, they were in for a shocking surprise.
@sumnerhayes3411
@sumnerhayes3411 2 жыл бұрын
They were going for a shock (Drew was originally cast as the lead, but switched to the smaller part because she thought it'd be a clever bait and-switch), but it didn't really work out. The “star actress dies off early” trope was already very well-established in horror movies (it goes back at least to Psycho), and all of the reviews back then talked about Neve Campbell as the actual heroine of the movie. If you read the Entertainment Weekly review from the time, it says that explicitly. If you read Ebert's review, he basically said it in so many words. So most people already knew about the twist going into theaters.
@flibbidyx2

@@flibbidyx2 Facts. Neve wasn't as well known at the time and Drew was the biggest film star of the younger members in the cast. Even on the promotional poster Drew's shown more prominently than any other character on purpose to throw the audience off. @chotzrary
@chotzrary 2 жыл бұрын
@@sumnerhayes3411 Scream was a hit because of word of mouth. Drew Barrymore was the face of Scream, she was GenX's sweetheart and we were all shocked she died in the first 12 minutes. Back then, horror movies became a joke. Scream was the movie that brought back horror movies lovers, and especially teens. Who wanted a good movie and a good scare, not straight to video B-horror. That's the reason it was such a massive hit. After Scream, Hollywood decided to make copycats with a twist and still made the heroine likeable. Even if she wasn't a virgin. It's why the franchise is still beloved and the new recent horror movies forgettable. Stick to the rules, like this and Halloween, and fans will still line up.

Thank you both for reacting to this. Scream is one of my favs & still holds up after over 25 years later. It definitely reinvented the horror genre in the mid 90s with it's focus on being meta, along with it's perfect balance of suspense, horror, mystery, & comedic elements. You both weren't the only ones that were caught off guard by the 1st 15 minutes of the movie as it still gets me to this day, lol. The plot of that film is about a woman who "abandons" her husband and three sons then attempts to get him back from his new girlfriend and convinces her eldest son that the girlfriend is the thing standing in the way of their family reuniting. It wouldn't necessarily be a clue to Billy being the killer until after watching the full film but once you know the story it's a clever little in-joke to the audience if you will. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Sidney even call Billy a mama's boy near the end of the film?

The reason they made the noise is because the killer was in the closet when she opened it. If you rewatched that scene before she falls asleep and get the call you can hear noises from the closet. She notices it but choose to ignore it. The killer got to her house first after school and hid in the closet all that time.

They were a lot of hints that shows the killers, but it was subtle. But they did a good job by misleading us. Even the sherif had the same shoes like the killer or Randy as movie buff was a red herring, bcs the killer played also a trivia game with their victims before killing them. Back in the 90s it wasn’t typical to have 2 killers. So this was quite a good suprise. It was also a huge suprise that they killed Drew Barrymore in the first 10 min. She was supposed to play Sidney but asked for the role of Casey Becker. She sad they will be surprised. Bcs back then she was one of the most popular teen stars and well known. They also promoted the movie with her face. Every thought she’s gonna survive. So they did the best job to subvert our expectations troughout the movie. Pls watch scream 2-5

They gave it away as Billy by the phone calls really. The way he speaks is quite unique in timing, so even disguised his vocal pattern gives him up as the killer, at least for me it did when I first watched it. And Asia if you don't want everyone to vote for Scream 2 you'll need to not give such hilarious reactions to every scary parts. In other words, my guess is you'll be watching it. :D

A little backstory of how Scream got created. Kevin Williamson (writer of I know what you did last summer, Dawson's Creek and The vampire diaries) wrote the story, originally titled Scary Movie, and based the plot loosely on the 1990 case of the Gainesville Ripper. It was a string of murders in a small town... Then it was changed to "Scream" cause the Ghostface costume was a close resemble to the Scream painting. The Ghostface costume was originally going to be all white but Wes Craven said it was to much like the KKK so he did the black robe with white face. Kevin wanted to create a story that has horror but also with some comedy of making it a self aware with the horror universe. But also use a relatable story that truly happened as a base line. So many Directors wanted to be apart of it there was even a big bidding war. He chose Wes Craven cause he was the only one who truly understood the story and his vision. Kevin wrote majority of the franchise and Wes Craven directed all of the Scream movies except for the new one "Scream 2022". He died after making the 4th Scream. Roger L. Jackson is the voice of Ghostface in all 5 Screams. The title of "Scary Movie" ended up being used for the parody movies. The 1st Scary Movie was about Scream, Scream 2, I know what you did last summer, the Blair witch project, Urban Legend, the sixth sense, The usual suspects, the Matrix, a very brief Dawson's Creek. .

So many interesting facts about this movie. The names of some of the characters are directly referencing characters of classic Horror films before it. Loomis = Doctor Loomis I also noticed one of the actors names in the original Halloween had the last name Loomis, so they likely named the doctor after that actor. A similar tradition seems to be carried on in Scream. “Drive down to the Mackenzie’s” another subtle Halloween reference. There are Wes Craven references, John Carpenter, and a little from Friday The 13th. The Janitor Fred/Freddy scene is actually Wes Craven. The scene with Billy climbing in Sidney’s window and the fact that they deliberately cast him to look like a young Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street. The Sheriff is played by the same actor from the original Nightmare on Elm Street. The “People deserve to know, how does it feel?” reporter is Linda Blair the young actress that was Reagan in The Exorcist. Though some of it may seem a bit dated, it’s all brilliantly done. When Sidney jumps out and stabs Billy with the Umbrella, she made direct contact with a wound he had from surgery, so his scream is genuine pain. Drew Barrymore was famous as a model and an actress. (Even a Playboy Model) Already a veteran of starring roles, she was initially offered the part of Sidney Prescott, but it was her idea to instead be killed in the first scene opening which she knew no one would expect, thereby catching them completely off guard. (The death of America’s sweetheart) They do a great job making everyone look guilty. Focusing on close-up shots of shoes, and displaying suggestive behaviors. Like Randy says, Everybody’s a suspect. When Billy throws the phone and hits Stu, his response: “Ow! You hit me with the phone, dick!” was improv but was kept in because of its obvious comedic relief. Things you don’t notice about the film until the second time around you watch it: When Sidney says “If Tatum sees you, she’ll draw blood; If you look at Billy, you can can see him react accordingly through his expressions, considering he is the one that killed her. Obviously, Stu was still inside hosting the party. Speaking of Tatum, Rose McGowan had to be fixed to the doggy door of the garage, because she COULD fit easily through it on the practice runs. Also, it is believed that Stu had feelings for Billy, hence the reason he killed innocent people in the name of helping Billy to exact his revenge. The movie is called “SCREAM” because the mask design was inspired by the painting “The Scream,” and thus it becomes a double meaning.

25:15 If there's one thing that makes me sad, it's that kids today will never know the beauty of the 90s house party. No BS electronic devices to distract everybody; just good booze, great snacks and a bunch of friends causing trouble while they watch old movies or pay TV. You get drunk and play grunge/alternative music really loudly until 3:50 in the morning when the police arrive and break everyone's wrists. Good times!

But it;s so true, that it follows a formula so it gets pretty predictable. This was one of the 1st slasher movies I remember that was "self-aware" for lack of a better term, i guess...it kinda made fun of itself. I also loved how instead of trying to figure out who the killer could it be in this seemingly normal group...they made everyone crazy & a suspect at least at one point or another
