Who am I? Who am I? 24601! Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean is just BRILLIANT! Do you think that Hugh Jackman kept up with one of the greatest musicals of all time? What do you think about his vocal skills? Is Hugh Jackman actually a good singer?
DID YOU KNOW that the June Rebellion took place between June 5-6 in 1832? And to celebrate its anniversary, this week on Screen Bites it is going to be full of ''music of a people who will not be slaves again!''
Les Misérables (2012) SYNOPSIS: After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

@@samuelbarber6177 yeah. Les miserables has 1,462 while the Bible has around 1200. But les miserables has 655,478 words in the original, while the Bible has 783,136- 807,307 words( depending on the version). So yes it’s a bigger book page wise but has less words.

If you read the novel by full chapters (every book in the five volumes has at least six or seven chapters with the exception of the one titled Javert Derailed, which depicts his suicide), then yes, it does take up four chapters. Actually it takes up five if you count the one where Valjean confesses.

Well they also had them sing live so they had to keep doing retake after retake. Vocal fatigue is real, especially for demanding songs such as these. That's the problem with doing a film version with a director who DOESN'T ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND the ins and outs of musical performance. You should hear Hugh in Oklahoma!... he's quite good. :)

But here’s the thing about that. Cats sucked to begin with. So I personally never expected much from that movie adaptation. Les Mis is one of the greatest stories ever told. So each version brings something different to the table. The novel version is literally one of the hallmarks of world literature. The numerous stage adaptations, but specifically the Claude-Michel Schonberg compositions, etc. bring a whole new perspective to the story. And this film adaptation, while it has its flaws, also gives a face to the tale and the musical. I love it.

This truly defines the character. He may be a criminal but he is a man of morals and ethics. He's faced with a terrible catch 22; as he says, if he stays silent, his soul is damned but if he confesses to being Jean Valjean, he's condemned. He violates every promise that he made to God if he chooses to let another man suffer in his place. Jackman does a fantastic job in conveying this moral dilemma.

2:26-2:30 is 1 of many earth shattering moments from this film, and y im so happy it was made into a movie. The camera zoom, the hair, costume, lighting, courtroom, the drama...it captures so much that can't be included in a stage production. Hugh Jackman delivers.

As a christian, this scene hits the hardest for me in the entire musical. He could not have made the right decision without his faith, and the rest that he has in God. And often in my life, I could not have made the morally correct choice without knowing that I am secured in God, whatever the outcome. He gave me hope when hope was gone.

@@user-bo3mp8un6c You are kind of right. The trouble is, no one is good or honest. To be good is not just to do good, but to love good for it's own sake, not for personal gain or to make yourself feel nice inside. People have no earthly reason to sacrifice themselves solely for the benefit of others. Plus, in a godless world, who's to say what "moral" is? Jean Valjean tries to convince himself that the right thing to do would be to stay out of it for the sake of his workers, but deep down he knows that God wants him to be honest and does it for Him.

This was by far one of Jackman's weakest vocal performances, largely because they did long days of takes, so by the time they finished, the actor's voices were all knackered and verging on permanently damaged. If you listen to recordings of Hugh singing, such as in Oklahoma, and compare it to the Les Mis film, he's so much more solid in those. He is a very good singer, but this film definitely isn't him at his best, not to mention they had to move the key of several of his solo numbers down so that he could sing them, he's more of a high baritone than a tenor, if he was a proper tenor then he's be able to reach the top B at the end of this song, same in Valjean's Soliloquy.

Even tho', at the beginning of this, he is excited at the prospect of his freedom, there was never any doubt what decision he was going to make. His whole journey is filled with self sacrifice, strength, courage, etc etc. Hugh Jackman was well cast and did a fantastic job

I appreciate how Hugh Jackman develops this song from speaking to singing. In a way the more melodious his voice becomes the more he reaches a decision and acts upon it. So yes there might be versions that are more agreeable to listen to, but I like the approach....

French version: He thinks that man is me, This could be my chance, I have nothing to do Other than to remain silent. But I have struggled for so much Built and invented everything, Only to give it up to a stray remorse. If I stay silent, I am damned And if I speak, I am condemned And all those workers who work in the factory And who believe in me. Can I abandon them? I would be sending them back to nothing again. If I stay silent, I am damned. But if I speak, I am condemned. What to do? Betray this man damned by error? Let him fall into the depths of misfortune? This innocent who bears my face, Who goes to judgement in my place, What to do? Refuse to walk back into hell Because I created my paradise on Earth, Cross out my past forevermore And hide in oblivion. What to do? How can I look in the mirror and see The face of a man who dared not look back. My soul belongs to God alone, And none can claim it as his own If this is a trial God sent to me, Then it is already decided for me! What to do? There is nothing to do! I am Jean Valjean! 2017, the Holidays I was watching this clip. I just invited the local Mini-stop cat to come home with me (he had pleaded with me the day before and chased after me when I was on my bike). I knew the first thing I needed to do was get him to a vet. I thought he needed a name. When Hugh said "I'm Jean Valjean" I knew by boy was Cat Valjean. He had a rough time on the street, but he was going to clean up like Hugh! Almost 5 years later (my Valjean was estimated by two vets to be about 5 years old when I got him), Valjean is my sweetheart and handsome boy (maybe a little fat, and he only has 4 teeth left).

I can agree that Hugh did not give his full vocal potential (it is reasonable that his voice was worn out by so many hours of filming and that he was dehydrated, I think it was a serious mistake by the director to record the songs live, especially those of Jean Valjean and Javert who were the ones who sang the most) but there is no doubt that Hugh gave everything with his performance, before seeing this version of Les Mis I saw the one from 1998 and personally I think that this version gives more depth to his characters, you leaves you emotionally destroyed.

Can I condemn this man to slavery Pretend I do not feel his agony This innocent who wears my face Who goes to judgement in my place Who am I? Can I conceal myself for evermore? Pretend I'm not the man I was before? And must my name until I die Be no more than an alibi? Must I lie? How can I ever face my fellow men? How can I ever face myself again? My soul belongs to God, I know I made that bargain long ago He gave me hope when hope was gone He gave me strength to journey on [He appears in front of the court] Who am I? Who am I? I'm Jean Valjean! [He unbuttons his shirt to reveal the number tattooed to his chest] And so Javert, you see it's true This man bears no more guilt than you! Who am I? 24601!

"Can I condemn this man to slavery, pretend I do not feel his agony. This innocent who bears my face and goes to judgement in my place" + later in the end: "to love another person is to see the face of God" = do we see how we condemn others in our silence, our complicity? can we see our prejudices? our limitation? Can we have the strength of Jean Valjean who recognizes that innocents are placed into situations that others could get us out of, but we don't because we care more about our own wants.

No, he didn't keep up. He redeemed himself in Showman and now on his Broadway work but that show was made for such powerful voices and Hooper turned most of them into wet spaghetti. I look forward to the day they make it again with Broadway/West End more than Hollywood names.
