Taika Waititi created a masterpiece with Thor: Ragnarok but Thor: Love and Thunder missed the mark. Why? How did a film with Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson fall short? Well, we have two scenes that show us why one works and the other doesn't.

This would ensure I would be able to support her, and provide the much needed financial stability to not rely on anyone else to help. I saw Love and Thunder in the middle of the night on a Disney cruise ship and it'll always have a special place in my heart because of that. But the entire time I was watching it, I was thinking to myself, 'Taika had too much creative freedom with this one.' I think what it needed more than anything was restraint, and for better or worse, this was Taika unrestrained.

Excellent analysis. 👍🏻 Ragnarok was a part of a longer storytelling arc and the Marvel Studio certainly had some precise guidelines. For Love and Thunder, Taika was recently nominated for an Oscar for best script for Jojo Rabbit, so the Studio let him do his thing and probably gave him only a few constraints, as there wasn't much planned for Thor in the near future then. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I don’t know, man. In retrospect, Love and Thunder feels like a movie where the director had zero direction because of all kinds of extenuating circumstances. You had the pandemic, causing limited production value (small crews, no sets, and disjointed filming). You had Marvel Studios shifting focus more towards television, and spreading themselves too thin. You had a franchise unsure of where to go next after a string of bombs (The Eternals, Shang Chi, etc.), it wanting to rush out as much stuff as possible to keep the money coming in. If anything, I feel like Taika Waititi was ushered into a writers room by some producer and was told that someone was going to be with him shortly to discuss the plan for the story and the movie, but they never showed up, so he was left to his own devices and eventually got bored and said “screw this.” The result was a passionless movie that felt like a middle finger to the people that hired him and wasted his time. He’s definitely capable of much, much better.

To me, the reason why Ragnarök worked, and Love and Thunder didn't was because of the goals and styles of the antagonists. Hela's goal to reclaim Asgard and resume her conquests of the universe is a very active goal, you can tell she's going to be aggressive in her approach. But for Gorr, it's the complete opposite. Despite being called "the god butcher" Gorr doesn't act aggressively in his approach in genocide and the gods he kills, he does it off screen. And when it's revealed that he wants to go to Eternity to make a wish that all the gods were dead, that's the most passive way to accomplish that goal. Gorr should've been a much more active and aggressive antagonist to make it work.

Exactly they are ruining great villains with great stories by completely changing the tone. If a story is dark keep it that way the point is bringing the comics to life. We finally have the technology and they are slaughtering great content. I wanted Gorr after Dark world but when I got what I wanted I didn't want it anymore. There are so many characters where humor is necessary to who they are. I hope they stay true to the source material moving forward otherwise don't use it.

The biggest missed opportunity that Love and Thunder had was to make Gorr sympathetic to the audience. Thor: Love and Thunder was released in 2022, which means that it had to have been written in 2020. We all questioned "Where was God?" in the cacophony of all the cataclysmic events that took place that year, if Gorr had been written in a way that questioned " What's the point of worshiping the gods when they abandon you when you need them most?" that would've made Gorr the voice of the audience and extremely relatable.

The thought I had throughout the movie and long after was "but would he actually say that joke? Would he actually react that way?" A leg day joke? A weird love triangle between thor and his two weapons, that are being treated as sentient enough to feed a drink to? Just about every joke in the movie felt like a joke someone might make ABOUT the characters, not a joke the character would make themselves. Just like you said, the jokes in ragnarok felt like they were genuine reactions from the characters in the situations they were in.

Another good comparison are the Mat Damon play scenes. In Ragnarok it was a character moment about what Loki actually did with Asgard once he took over. The play was funny, but it also was an important plot and characterization moment. In Love & Thunder they just went "that was funny, let's do it again!" But the play served no purpose, so fell flat.

AS you mentioned, each Thor movie tells the story in a different genre. Love and Thunder is a story told to children by Korg. the movie in enveloped by them sitting under a tree while he relates the tale. that's why the story is toned down in the grittiness. I thought of the movie as an example of how our myths and legends were formed though oral history. Sometime the stories were for moral education, sometimes they are just for amusement. Perhaps Waititi missed the mark in judgement, but I give him credit for not playing to the same cliches every time.

Comic book Gorr is one of the best villains Marvel has come put with, in my opinion. In the comics, Gorr isn't actually seen killing very many God's, but here's the thing: Thor in the present day tracks down dead gods like in the film, but he instantly realizes this is the work of Gorr, whom he met hundreds of years ago. The story of Thor finding the deads gods in then intercut with flashbacks to a young Thor being captured and tortured by Gorr. This way, Gorr feels like both a physical and looming threat at the same time. Aaron rules.

I also think the reenactments of the previous movies show why "Ragnarok" was great while "Love and Thunder" failed. In "Ragnarok," there's a play about Loki's death in "The Dark World." In it, it makes Loki's death seem noble and heroic. Loki rewrote Asgard history to glorify himself, and as we find out later, Odin did the exact same thing by trying to write Hela and their conquests out of history. In "Love and Thunder," there's a play about Odin's death and Hela's return in "Ragnarok." However, that one doesn't add anything to the story or its moral. It's just a joke put for an audience at an amusement park.

Despite being called "the god butcher" Gorr doesn't act aggressively in his approach to genocide and the gods he kills, he does it off-screen. And when it's revealed that he wants to go to Eternity to make a wish that all the gods were dead, that's the most passive way to accomplish that goal. Gorr should've been a much more active and aggressive antagonist to make it work. I really hope big-name studios (or at least someone with some pull) watch these videos and others like them - is this not what they teach in film school? The bits about having comedic moments in your movies, but not at the expense of the stakes seem so obvious in retrospect. Another banger of video props to Ryan and the whole Screencrush team "Ragnorok works because Thor is attempting to be serious and fails." That's a really good way of putting it. 6 hours ago Loki was breaking into a Frost Giant cold sweat from PTSD from being rag-dolled by the She-Hulk. I enjoyed Love and Thunder. It felt like a love letter to fathers and fatherhood. 7 hours ago The Dark World was great imo. Nice to have the original serious tone of dark fantasy in Thor's universe. The humorous stuff is ok but I feel it cheapens the Asgardian themes. Not to mention every ensuing sequel has to top the last in terms of comedy. Well written Brianna. Thanks for bringing to light why this movie felt like bad indigestion. Simple. One tried too hard to be the other. 1 hour ago Comic book Gorr is one of the best villains Marvel has come put with, in my opinion. In the comics, Gorr isn't actually seen killing very many gods, but here's the thing: Thor in the present day tracks down dead gods like in the film, but he instantly realizes this is the work of Gorr, whom he met hundreds of years ago. The story of Thor finding the dead gods is then intercut with flashbacks to a young Thor being captured and tortured by Gorr. This way, Gorr feels like both a physical and looming threat at the same time. Aaron rules. Love & Thunder is what happens when you have no one reigning in the 'creativity' of a powerful creator to ensure they are still telling a good story. See also: Stephen King (The Tommyknockers) and/or The Prequel Trilogy 4 hours ago Another good comparison is the Mat Damon play scenes. In Ragnarok, it was a character moment about what Loki actually did with Asgard once he took over. The play was funny, but it also was an important plot and characterization moment. In Love & Thunder they just went "That was funny, let's do it again!" But the play served no purpose, so fell flat. There was no tension in Love & Thunder. Any scary darkness brought by Gorr was drowned out by constant silliness. There was never any fear that things could go wrong. I totally agree, but it was Gore I loved Bale's version but they only showed him kill one god, and that wasn't even on purpose they could have kept the movie the same but shown Gore kill gods and the scene at the Olympic Gore should have busted In and decapitate a Celestial and the head falls in and he kills multiple gods making Gore a threat like that would have elevated the film a lot Great review. I had a really hard time watching Love and Thunder to the end just for the reasons you explained. The silliness was just too much for me. 6 hours ago I had an almost complete collection of the MCU on my shelves... but not L&T. It felt disjointed, disrespectful to both the source material and the audience, and deeply self-indulgent. People complain about a lot of the Disney + shows, but I have found many things to like about all of them (even Secret Invasion had some great performances despite its shitty plotting). There is literally nothing about L&T that I enjoyed. 3 hours ago (edited) Taika didn't write Ragnarok Craig Kyle and Chris Yost did the draft and that's why it was good. I love Thor but hated Love and Thunder. I love Ragnarok it's that whole package of everything. 4 hours ago The Arm going to Valhalla was another moment where he went from serious to silly too fast I think a scene that was repeated that showed the difference between the two movies was the play. The scene worked in Ragnorok because everyone knew it was Loki being self-aggrandizing (plus the meta-humor of Hopkins playing Hiddleston playing Hopkins). Also, it moved the plot because Thor knew immediately it was Loki. The play in Love and Thunder had none of that going for it and didn't work. I remember reading that big, pivotal scenes in Love and Thunder, like Jane getting the hammer and the god killer actually killing gods, were shot and then never put in the movie. I feel a little bit robbed since I was waiting for those scenes while watching the movie and was so confused when they got handled as exposition instead. The Zeus scene was changed, probably in reshoots. The home video release has a really good deleted scene where Zeus visits him at new Asgard and gifts him the lightening bolt and gives him advice about the power of Zeus. Its better than anything we get of Zeus in the theatrical cut.

I love Ragnarok. Once a year without fail. Thor is one my favorite characters (thanks Walt Simonson) Love and Thunder was a film. Gorr and Jane Foster Thor were gut punches in the comics. That movie just made me not care about either or anything else. This is your best movie comparison in a minute. I forgot that’s why I found the channel… besides Doug. Well done.

I think it also doesn't help that love and thunder undid all character growth of the character and turned him into the butt of all jokes and into a buffoon. And even if they were a bit of opposition, they show up at a place to save the gods and then proceed to kill one and slaughter his guards (if that had been red blood this scene might've gotten the movie a different rating) doesn't really make us root for the characters.

I enjoyed *Thor: Raganarok* and it probably is my favorite of the Thor films. That said, I do wish it had 10% fewer jokes and 10% more sincerity. I think it would have been a stronger film, but it's still really enjoyable as is.

Also, grossly underusing the Guardians of the Galaxy. I mean, a scene with dialogue between Korg (who uses so many metaphors and stuff like that) and Drax (who takes everything completely literally) would have been comedic gold without being too over the top. Plus, the dynamic that Loki brings in Ragnarok (or any movie for that matter) is irreplaceable so that was an element that was completely missing from Love and Thunder. Exploring Thor's fear of losing Jane by paralleling it with losing loki (and possibly including flashbacks of Loki with Thor) would have added greatly to the gravity of the situation and what Thor was going through.

The thing that people didn’t get about Love and Thunder is that the movie was actually from the point of view of Korg and that was why the movie didn’t make sense. We the audience was being told a story by a character and that character was an alien. So his point of view of what happened and how he told us the story was different from what really happened but we’re shown the story from his view and not how it actually happened.

Thor was my favorite MCU Avenger since his first movie. I still love both Thor and Ragnarok, and Dark World is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be (though I would argue it's a better Loki movie than it is a Thor movie). Despite that, it was incredibly obvious to me early on that Love and Thunder was going to be a mess. I wanted to be excited for another Thor movie, but the more footage we saw, the more I was convinced it had done what I most feared in taking the wrong lesson from Ragnarok, which was that a Thor movie needed to be funny. I never ended up bothering to see L&T, and from everything I've heard both online and through word of mouth, I made the right call. Breaks my heart, but maybe we'll get one last Thor movie in an attempt to let Chris Hemsworth go out on a high note.

Love and Thunder should have been a powerful film. At the center is Gorr who is grieving for his dead daughter and blaming the Gods. In addition, you have Jane who is dying. There was not enough time devoted to that. How does that affect her relationship with Thor? WandaVision had a lot of comedic moments but it never lost sight of the fact that this was Wanda grieving. Jane's cancer was buried in a blizzard of jokes.

Ragnarok isn't written by Taika, it's only directed by him. Hemsworth said in interviews that he commented on some of the script and Taika asked him if he thought he was funnier than him... 🙄 Taika seems to have quite an ego.

If they hadn't cut out all the gor and Zeus scenes love and thunder would have been better than ragnarok. My biggest complaint with ragnarok is it had 0 heart after Odin died. Litterally nothing after that moment was taken seriously. Even the death of his friends and home were played for jokes. Whereas the ending of love and thunder was beautiful. This amazing commentary on loss and they let thor feel the emotion of losing someone he loved, whereas they just turned the destruction of Asgard into a joke. I actually really don't like the third act of ragnarok, it could have had humor and still had better tone to fit the stakes. I want a directors cut for love and thunder since the studio apparently made him cut out over a half hour of the film

I've always had a soft spot for *Thor: The Dark World* despite its flaws (mostly 'cause I love to see Thor and Loki team up). However it wasn't until you mentioned that Thor 2 chose to stick to High Fantasy as its sole genre when I realized that's another reason I like it. I tend to pick High Fantasy over Sci-fi and films with a contemporary setting.

One of my favorite thing's about thor movies are the thor-loki interactions. Literally the only good part of Thor the Dark world was thor breaking loki out of prison. Love and thunder is the first thor movie without loki and I really missed that

To me, they took all of the character development and seriousness of Thor from infinity war and endgame and just threw it out the window. Thor was the God of Thunder in any other MCU movie besides the ones directed by Taika Waititi. In Ragnarok and Love and Thunder, he was just comic relief.
