When Kate said: I've waited so long for you. It was because she made it off the island and lived an entire life without Jack. She waited decades to live and die to see him again. It was probably my favorite part of the finale.

I spent the better part of 15 years being pissed off at this series and it’s ending. The last few weeks I decided to rewatch it and finally finished it tonight. INCREDIBLY different perspective the second time around!! I think there has to be significant consideration made for the old “week to week” version of shows versus modern binge watching. So much of the detail in this show got lost (pun intended), overlooked, and/or forgotten week to week, season to season. When you can watch separate episodes in a shorter time frame, those details stay fresh on your mind and give the narrative much more color. If you loved Lost when it was on the air but hated the ending…I highly encourage you to rewatch it!
@joyb.50904 ай бұрын
I do think that the 1 episode per week format was great if you were super into the show, rewatching each episode, chatting on message boards and listening to the podcasts. It gave you time to process what was going on and catch things you missed when you watched it the first time. I can see how if you were a casual watcher of the show every week that it would be super easy to have missed a lot, or as you say forgot things from week to week. I was in the super obsessed category, lol. So when the finale came I was like, "I can't believe people didn't GET THAT!!"

@@nathanhawee5373One of the best theories I've heard is that everyone in this show's version of purgatory perceives the people they love as how they remembered them in life. For instance, Jack never got to see baby Aaron grow up, so it makes sense that he would perceive him as a baby when he meets his soulmates in that church. Everyone on the island has their own perceptions and versions of this church moment, but we get to experience Jack's because we actually see him die. Same with Charlie. In theory though, after Clare dies, she probably would've seen all her island soulmates as well as a grown up Aaron, but that's pure speculation and left up to us. It's one of the reasons I love the ending - it leaves just enough room for interpretation while giving us closure at the same time.

The line when Jack's father says you built this place to help you all 'remember' is one of the most powerful pieces of writing I've come across in media, because it teaches through our current version of storytelling what many spiritual books and teachers have talked about since we first asked the question 'why are we here?'. Every spiritual teaching I've come across in some way talks about the purpose of life being to remember who or what you really are. If we are to believe we are all spirit having a human experience, which at birth requires us to 'forget' who are so we can truly live the experience of being human, that to me is the best explanation for existence I've come across. Lost ultimately left us with this message. They all came together, lived, loved, lost, fully experienced physical existence, eventually all died at different times and places, then moved on, remembering what they really are. This moment of remembering at death must be truly incredible. To finally know what you might feel or intuit in life, that stories like Lost allude to, would be the most wonderful experience of them all. I for one like to look at death this way, it makes it seem like an amazing transition and expansion of awareness.

You had me thinking about LOST again, when it was mentioned in the recent ACOLYTE you made, and how that show affected my life and my friends lives and is pretty much responsible for my kids existing. I had a group of 20 to 30 friends who would get together weekly for each new episode of LOST and we did this for 4 years. Anyway I personally really liked the ending of the show even if half the people in my group didn't. They mostly wanted answers to everything and I would always say that it is the journey not the destination that matters and that any answers they got probably wouldn't be as good as they answers we came up with together in our heads. The producers even released that deleted scene with Hurly, Mike, and Walt visiting the Dharma station in the real world saying something similar about getting answers. I really hope everyone who had a problem with LOSTs ending watches your video cause it will definitely help them understand better.

Ohh I'm excited about this. My most favourite show of all time. I've watched it countless times and each time I've discovered something new. The story is just brilliant and fit people who say they don't get it .. they really need to watch it more closely. I remember when it first aired and the absolute insanity and hype it generated! Each week the theories and speculations. It was such a fun time. Some of the character deaths still hurt me deep till this day. 💔 What a show

Lost was the first TV show I really watched as a young Teenager, and really dedicate time to watch, create teories and everything. That show was my introduction to this world and I love it sooo much that I can't even quantify. I periodically rewatch Lost and everytime it get better. The end was beautiful, and it is really sad most people did not understood. THANK YOU so much for this video, for keeping the sparkle of it living.

My 12 year old daughter just finished the entire series of Lost on Netflix. She absolutely loved the show and went straight into rewatching it. I watched it when it first aired in 2004. What an awesome journey it has been for me to watch it with her. She swears that no other show will ever come close to Lost. I've seen many good ones. And I fully agree with her. The themes explored in this show are truly universal. Loved it back then. Love it even more now.

Incredible breakdown! I have been one of those people who were interested in watching Lost. But, I never got past the first episode, because I came to it late and heard about it having an unsatisfying ending. I now feel excited to watch this series, especially since I'm one of those people who don't have a problem susupending there meta-knowledge of a show. I'll often purposefully watch your breakdowns before watching a show so I'll be able to watch it without having to pick out all of those special moments that make it so much better. Thank You! I appreciate all of the hard work, dedication, and passion you share with us.

I remember binge-watching the first 5 seasons, then watching the last season with the rest of the world as it came out. And I didn't quite understand why people were disappointed with it. I didn't catch all the answers at first, but felt I understood the finale and I liked it a lot at the time. This video really helps and is a great one to show people if the topic ever comes up, thanks for doing this, ScreenCrush!

Wonderful video! I started the show well after it was underway - I binged on WatchABC and got up to current around mid-way of the final season - and I think this is a big reason why I enjoyed the ending more than many who were with it the entire run. They spent months between seasons debating mysteries and compiling theories. It’s not to blame them for being frustrated if, for example, the polar bear didn’t get “explained”. I missed the experience of the social media community but also I didn’t have the buildup of it either, I just had the stories and the characters. It remains an all time favorite of mine. The last ten minutes are breathtaking. The closing eye is perfection. It still gives me chills.

Thank you for this, Ryan. LOST was a seminal show for me it first aired and I was initially disappointed with its final. Your breakdown really helped me recontextualize what was going throughout the last season. Such a great show. Truly the beginning of weekly tv programming that warranted in- depth analysis. I'd personally love for a channel to go back and break the series down in its entirety.

So LOST was really the first binge watch. SO many people bought or borrowed the show on DVD during the 4th and 5th season to catch up and see the last season. I have NEVER seen someone who watched the show that way, like the ending. BUT, everyone I know, including myself, who watched it weekly from day one, loved the ending. Because it's the characters they grew to care about. Not the island. The binge'rs didn't have enough time to care about them. They only wanted to know what the answers were.

Lost, for me, is the greatest television show of all time... The emotional catharsis that the final season cements is the whole show is about humanity, love, our own struggles, our flaws, and the path we all must take in letting go and growing past those flaws and find our destiny. I love shows like this that don't hold our hands through every aspect... There's always going to be mysteries and things we don't understand here on Earth... At least not until we've reached certain points in our lives, even after death. "It's a leap of faith." By the end, before everyone can move on, they have to come to terms with not only their death, but with themselves. The show isn't called Lost because they're literally lost on an island... It's because all the characters featured in the show are lost themselves and they're given a chance to find themselves in each other on the island. "Live together, die alone."

Great video. The ending of LOST is perfect because the show was always about the characters, and the ending totally delivered for each character on the show. In many ways it suffered a similar fate to Twin Peaks with such a huge part of the audience misunderstanding the core principle of the show. Just as Twin Peaks wasn’t about who killed Laura and actually about how Laura and her death impacted this community, LOST was always about the survivors and how the challenges and mysteries of the island shaped them. People claim the show ended up a mess but I couldn’t disagree more - it stayed fiercely loyal to the core idea all the way through in a way. It didn’t just suddenly become sci fi, time travel wasn’t just crowbarred in, it was all a natural extension of the key themes they were dealing with. This is a show about how adversity shapes us, our past lives with us and how we have to let things go. Time travel was a natural extension of the show right from the very first flashback. Sure the execution here and there could have been better and LOST famously struggled around the 3rd season before they knew exactly how long they could run for, but for such a long running show that’s to be expected. The totality of the journeys taken by these characters is beautiful and one of the best tv experiences you can have. When you watch the final season without the constant expectation to know all the answers and you just follow the journeys of the characters, it’s the greatest final season of tv of all time IMO.

Wow, I didn't expect to see a video about Lost in 2024, but I enjoyed this look back at my first show to obsess over. I think part of what made the ending seem so bad is that it confirmed a lot of fan theories over the years on message boards about the survivors being dead and it seemed cheap. I think this video was helpful in redeeming the show's ending, and you make many valid points. Game of Thrones is a great comparison as it was a very popular show with a devoted fanbase that felt similarly disappointed by the ending of the series. I'd like to rewatch the show now because the journey of the characters was much more interesting than their destination. I felt like an era of my life ended when that show ended. Thank you for the great watch!

Every time lost blew my mind: Ethan wasn’t on the plane, first Jacob appearance, the fact that jack and john had a duality in the ending of the first season and then again as the protector and the man in black, the tease of the light and the dark when lock and Walt played backgammon. Btw this comment could extend beyond the metaphysical boundaries of reality, if I named everything I liked about the show.

I was a Lost fanatic. I made the odd choice of watching the S1 finale to gauge if it lived up to the hype. Immediately hooked. I watched every episode, read all of the side books (fairly uniformly terrific, they were), but was deflated by the ending. I either missed some of the details that you discuss here or I’ve forgotten them over the years. I was already thinking, as you proposed at the end, that (wait for it…) we have to go back. I’m kicking off a full rewatch today. Asking for an episode by episode breakdown of a 20-year old show is bold, but maybe? At a minimum, is it too much to ask for 6 season breakdowns? Lost merch would be a cherry on top. Haha.
