It’s called a precordial thump, and actually can product around 3-5 joules of electrical activity to correct an irregular rhythm, almost like a mini defibrillator. Although the chances of it working are extremely low, and the person has to actually have a correctable rhythm, it does have the small possibility of working 👍🏻

I feel like you could still do Correct-looking compressions and maybe use camera angles to your advantage so you don’t actually break anyone. They could put a layer of padding on the patient’s chest so it looked like the chest was going down further, just pretend you’re pressing hard without putting your full weight on them, etc. they could definitely do better than they do in these shows.

To be fair to the mouth-to-mouth scene, this show originally aired in 2004, and in my research (I could be wrong) mouth-to-mouth was still used until 2009-2011. Also, gunpowder doesn't explode, it burns hot and fast. It is actually pretty effective for cauterizing a wound.

@bishielurfer 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it can be difficult to do realistic chest compressions, since you don't want to hurt the performer, but so many of them are just so bad. Like I can forgive them clearly not pushing too hard so as not to hurt the person, but sometimes they're barely moving at all, their hands are in totally the wrong place, or they're not even (or barely) touching the person. But I think part of the reason Dr. Mike points it out each time is I think the average by-stander probably is going to be a bit worried about hurting the person, so it's one of those things where you do kind of want to frequently emphasize the proper way to do it in case you ever are in that situation.

My dad was in the military (around 1970s) where he befriended a medic in his squad and they still occasionally hang out and tell some "war stories". He once told me that they actually trained to do this kind of "direct" blood transfusions in emergency situations. Every soldier wore their identification, blood type, chronic illnesses, allergies, etc. on dog tags around their neck and in a situation where someone's life depended on a blood transfusion (which I'd imagine would be fairly common when there's bombs and bullets flying around) and they could not do an immediate evac or didn't have blood supply on hand, they would find someone with a compatible blood type and use a special kind of tube that allowed a direct blood transfusion from a donor's vein to the recipient. As he told me he hasn't actually needed to do it himself, since they always had sufficient medical supplies at hand or some kind of medical vehicle close-by which was fully kitted out, but he does know of a different medic who trained with him and had to use this method in a hostile environment on someone who lost a leg to a landmine going off in close proximity and it saved the guy's life. It bought them enough time to move him to a safe evacuation point and allow them to transport the soldier to hospital by helicopter, almost like a action movie. Maybe this would be an interesting guest to get for a video one day. An actual army medic to tell us of some of the stuff they have to do in combat situations to save patients from explosion or gunshot wounds.

@@ChristineTheHippie Yes, he is a doctor analyzing the TV show from a doctor's perspective. However he is calling things ridiculous when they are 100% obviously being done that way because it is a TV show. THAT is my problem with it. He can simply say "Doctors would not perform this test or that test." Instead he exacerbates how "crazy" it is that they are having the Doctors do all of these tests. The Doctors are the MAIN CHARACTERS ON THE TV SHOW!!!!! He thinks TV shows should be like real life. I just wish that he would take the circumstances present in the TV show as a starting off point to explain how they are done in real life. Instead he does more criticizing of how the writers write the TV show unrealistically. when he does not reaction videos he is VERY good about explaining how things are done and that disappoints me that he does not apply the same process to the reactions.

For the record, part of imprisoned Jack talking to Ben about the spinal tumors, including their "aggression" is because he knows he is the only one capable of operating on the tumor and is just trying to make it seem as urgent as possible so he can get out of the cage. Same with him intentially injuring the patient, he was leveraging the situation to ensure his friends get free.

I was also thinking that when he told Juliet that the X-Ray was of a “40-year-old’s” spine, Jack could have been making a guess to see Juliet’s reaction so he could confirm whether or not it was Ben’s.

I kind of wanted to see him react to Jack getting angry at Locke for not providing the right information about Boone's fall. I was curious whether that would indeed be a big deal here and if there had been any chance of a better prognosis otherwise.

To be fair Jack could have lied about Ben having an aggressive tumor for the opportunity to operate, pretend he didn't want to and then be able to use the operation as leverage, not really caring about Ben, to free Kate and Sawyer. I actually have seen the entire series of Lost. It's still on Hulu if anyone's interested in watching the show.

To be fair, I had CPR training in 2019 and we did that, but they gave us these plastic things (like a sheet with a little mouthpiece to breathe through) that we were supposed to put between our mouth and the CPR mannequin thing's mouth, and the one I had didn't even work right, so it kept saying I wasn't doing it right, but my instructor saw that we were actually doing what we were supposed to and the thing just wasn't working correctly, so she passed us anyway.

@@notjustafangirl7313 oh yeah we were shown those things when I learned in 2003, but the school didn't have the money to get enough for everyone, so we just saw the teacher use the plastic separator

@@notjustafangirl7313 I got mine in 2015. They showed us plastic thing, showed us how to use it, and then said you'll only be able to use these in situations where you'll likely have access to better tools anyways, so don't worry about that too much.

Critiquing Lost's 'medical' scenes without having watched the show and the scenes in context isn't really productive. Just like you want to know everything surrounding an injury(that hurt ankle), everything surrounding why Jack, Kate, Sayid, etc. do what they do should also be known and taken into consideration. Also, mouth-to-mouth was still accepted practice when this show was made, Jack wasn't a general practice doctor; his specialty was spinal surgery, and actual chest compressions can't be done on actors in a television show without risk of injury. It's enough to show they are being done.
