The real trouble is that Disney took a classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale that had a tragic ending and gave it a happy ending that totally changed the message of the story. In the original, the mermaid fails to make the prince fall in love with her and loses her life. The message is: "don't change yourself to please others, because you can't make someone fall in love in with you." When Ariel succeeds in making the Prince fall in love with her, the message changes to: "change as much as you can, sacrifice everything including your identity, and can have the one you love." YIKES!
@gabisonguitar2065
@gabisonguitar2065 8 жыл бұрын
tbh I don't think their message was "change yourself until they like you", it was more along the lines of the generic "true love conquers all"

Basically every Disney movie: Two complete strangers thinking: "She's so hot" + "He's so hot" = We're in love and must get married. The only movie to deviate from that formula back then was Beauty and the Beast, but then he turned out to be a hot prince but at least she was already "in love" with him. It was more about Stockholm Syndrome than anything else.
@Interestingenough4
@Interestingenough4 9 жыл бұрын
"Frozen" actually lambasted that whole formula you were talking about. Queen Elsa criticized Princess Anna for rashly falling for Prince Hans, and refused to grant them permission to marry. As for "Beauty and the Beast", I didn't see it as Stockholm Syndrome, but rather some major icebreaking time and character development (especially starting with the Beast going out of his way to save her from the wolves) that led them to fall in love under unlikely circumstances. And I liked that the movie took its time to develop the romance, instead of just throwing it in in a hurry. But other than "Frozen" and "Beauty and the Beast", the other Disney "Princess" flicks followed that entire formula.

darthcarnage12 Why do all of Disney movies need to have any romance elements in it or decided to make that the highlight of the film? They're not that good at it and if they're it usually comes off as pretty shallow or empty. This is why I like Pixar more and really like Big Hero 6 (even if that was also a Marvel movie).

My friend and I sang this song for our spring concert in 5TH GRADE (we’re in high school now) and we will never forget “...under the sea, nobody beat us, fry us and eat us in fricassee!” The entire second verse and chorus is about how on land they get eaten.

I'd argue that Triton is the real villain of the movie, I mean.. it starts with him having his daughters sing his praises in a big musical show and he gets pissed when one isn't there. Also ruins her stuff, never listens and appearantly he could have easily done what she went to the witch for. On the other hand, it seems they eat plenty of fish at Eric's castle and he seems totally cool with that in the end. Ariel doesnt seem to mind the lobster dinner either.

xLexC7x This is sort of correct. She would only get to become an angel if she were able to help people out and bring them happiness (because the original reason for her wanting to become a human was because mermaids did not have an "immortal soul" and would not get to go to heaven once they died)

***** most fairy tales I know have happy endings, I guess we heard different ones as kids^^ I know that disney changed the stories (I'm German), but the fairytales I know had moral lessons and happy endings. Except she was 16. She literally says she's 16 in the movie itself. I think Eric was maybe 18. I'm not sure though as it wasn't said though I think his birthday was part of the movie(what they were doing on the ship before the storm). He wasn't that much older than her. And until this video I hadn't realized how much this was about a girl objectifying a guy's looks to the point of abandoning her family for the chance to make out with him. Apparently they wrote Ariel as a girl identifiable with those teenagers with celebrity crushes.

I agree with pretty much all of this...except one thing. I think "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is one of the better "Disney Villain Songs". I'd only rate "Gaston" higher. (I know lots of people like "Be Prepared", but that one's mostly talk-sung.) Great job. (P.S. Anyone else find it weird how Anderson's "The Little Mermaid" got a "have-it-all" ending for Ariel, Anderson's "The Snow Queen" got repeatedly sanitized until it eventually turned into "Frozen", but Disney, for whatever reason, decided to do a completely faithful adaptation of Anderson's "The Little Match Girl" when it had a grimmer ending than either of those two ever could?)

I've read an interesting article about the Little Mermaid that Ariel isn't the character to focus on. Her father is. Think about it. She goes through the film doing what she wants and has other people get her out of her mistakes and gets her happy ending! She doesn't learn anything from it and her character doesn't change. Instead look at her father. An overbearing parent who is scared of losing his daughter since his wife died, his overprotectiveness dirves her away, and he has to learn that she needs to make her own decisions good or bad (even though she wonb't learn anything from it), and let his little girl grow up. It does make it a better story.

Screen Junkies are some of the few people that still remember that Ariel was originally 15, before Disney silently went back and edited the movie.

Agreed. It's actually sort of consensus that some villain songs (hellfire, poor unfortunate souls, be prepared and friends from the other side) are among the best Disney songs of all times. But for all the spot-on, hilarious stuff, they have to have a miss sometimes :p

I was surprised they joked about the villain's songs being skipped in the ost's because I disagree, I LOVE a lot of villainous songs, this one included, as well as the ones in Lion King and Prince of Egypt.

I didnt really have a problem watching the "killing the fishes" scene when i saw it as a kid. I was quite used to the fact of killing animals for eating them, since i live in a farm. I actually find that song catchy... And laughed REALLY hard when the chef chased Sebastian.
