I think I watched like 20 minutes of this movie before getting impossibly bored. It pretends to be so much smarter than it is. Sierra is such an awful person, but we're suppose to let her get away with everything because she's not conventionally attractive and has a few bullies. Bullying can be awful of course, but Sierra basically just brushes it off? She doesn't even seem bothered by it. Or by her appearence. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure Sierra is a self insert character, and the author wanted her to both be the idealized version of herself (someone who outsmarts bullies and doesn't care about her appearence) but also the sympathetic version of herself (someone who can be forgiven for everything, including catfishing, lying about having a disability and publically humiliating her friend who did nothing but help Sierra, because she's insecure). It just doesn't work

This was clearly meant to be a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac adaptation. (although her last name is the same as that of the playwright for the musical Cyrano, so they could have thought they were adapting that without singing... which is basically just Cyrano de Bergerac) Netflix released another modern day Cyrano de Bergerac adaptation, The Half of It, which is phenomenal. I think it would be cool to compare the two movies and discuss how to make a good vs bad adaptation.

Thanks for the explanation about the false victory/false defeat. That’s super interesting and one of those things that’s kind of hidden in plain sight where it often happens in film, but I didn’t really know a name for it or realize how prevalent the pattern is or how predictable it can make a film once you start noticing it..
