Great ideas. I have a Stihl MS250C and I wish it used plain ‘ol blade nuts & scrench. The “toolless” chain adjustment wanders. Probably why it was given to me.

I don't have the kind of time with chainsaws that you do, but I think the original is mostly fine. I think you could shorten the screwdriver so it's only long enough to work on all the saws. I also think you could attach it to a spring loaded spool - the kind you might use with a key card or for fishing tools. Then it's easy to grab, but always pulls back to a safe spot and never gets dropped. There are some T-handled motorcycle tools around that have the common sockets on the ends, and if one of those ends had a modular screwdriver bit that fit a socket, then you could have Phillips and flat.

I dig these videos, because even though I am in a different field for sure, I am always game to modify tools. I love tools and nerd hard with them. (Which leads to unhealthy habits, like having too many ratchets, etc.)

Nice video Spencer. I usually lose one or two of those a year but, blame it on my wife for moving things. You have quite a few saws but, you have a ways to go to catch up to Buckin. Get ready for some more snow on Thursday and Friday. 26 days until Spring.

Couple ideas. For the paracord loop, if you add a piece trimmer string to the inside, it makes the loop more rigid yet still flexible. For the screwdriver, weld a ring onto the end to fit it on the carabiner.

Cool and all but you do know the BIG side is for the spark plug? Right? These are all useless if u have a fouled plug. U won’t be able to get scrench deep enough to back it out. So unless you’re only using to adjust bar then you’re screwed. NPI 😅

Small outboards usually come with the "scrench" as well. If you need to change a spark plug miles from nowhere on the water and didn't want to carry a heavy toolbox, well the scrench does the job. In some cases the plug being weirdly recessed needed the 'socket' as well so the old screwdriver, vise grips, and crescent wrench just weren't enough. Been that way for decades with saws and outboards as well a few other small engine rigs.

I think you should try leaving the scrench alone but modify around the current design. Here are my suggestions & why: A) Wrap the paracord around the socket end on both sides of the screwdriver with several lashes. This should eliminate the holes through the metal which eventually will cut the paracord. B) We've seen you sew so what about adding to your belt? Do it like the first one you lost only make a horizontal flap that has a button snap to cover over the wrench end. This should keep it snug in your belt but still easy to remove when needed. Think of a shirt pocket with a button snap only horizontally. C) Put a small neodymium magnet in your belt at the screwdriver end of where you want the scrench to be. This way it won't fall out. In regards to the lashing for technique you might want to check out the old boy scout manual. I learned lashing out of one that came from the 50s. By now I'd be surprised if some one some where hasn't put it or something similar online. This way your lashing will be the best it can be. Wrapping part of the wrench end should insulate your hand from the tool from both cold and overall just make the tool more of a delight to use by adding some cushioning. Since you are now the pandemic tree guy do you have any advice for getting rid of woodpeckers? A small adolescent downy woodpecker has ravaged my cedar siding. It has made like 6-8 holes in the NE corner of my building. It even pulled the fiberglass insulation out! I don't think it's living in there now. I'd like to spray foam the area but my Little Giant ladder ha been stolen.

Be forewarned that if you do that Internet law requires it be called a Tactical Scrench.
@metaspencer
@metaspencer 2 жыл бұрын
Any solution involving magnets gains 10 extra point from me, so I like it! Sounds elegant. As for the woodpeckers we have the same problem and they really attack the house where there are insects around. Short of swatting at them with a tennis racket taped to a broom handle, I'm out of ideas. Hang in buddy! :)

I like the thought process you sent through to refine the idea. I'm surprised you didn't just cut the screwdriver down and weld a washer on the end
