I think it's commendable that you're exploring a screw drive machine. Without something else to compare to, it's difficult to determine weak points in the drive train. Like you said, those screws create a massive amount of torque or resistance for the rest of your parts. Good job and good luck if you choose to build another one.

A mechanical drivetrain like that is going to have all sorts of forces lateral to the torque. My first inclination would have been to have a hydraulic motor directly mounted on each screw. That would make torque the only stress on your frame, and eliminate the chance of bending any axles. Heck, you could put one on each end of both screws with "armor cones" over the front two, and voila - double the torque!

+Darth Annoyance I was thinking: "I would have used hydraulic motors directly, instead. See if anyone else said it.."; First comment! What did scare the shit out of me though, was what might happen if you fell off, or something got caught in those screws (or the open drive chains).

You have earned a thumbs up my friend . When I heard those chain skipping sounds I feared the worst. You have had the opportunity to drive something very few people ever will drive. Too bad it didn't hold up longer for you. I guess you'll get that lawn decoration after all. Remember , life is more interesting if you get off the couch and try something. Congrats for that. I can't wait to see what your next project will be. Thanks for the show. Joe

What I see as the biggest problem is the force needed to turn the drive screws is also being exerted sideways on the transmission shaft that is providing the power. Solution: use a worm drive on the screw and then run the shaft up the arm and use bevel gears to get the power from the transmission output shaft. You could still use chain drive from the transmission if you used a double worm drive on the ends of the screws. Or you could just use a worm off of the transmission to the shaft which ends as a worm gear driving the screw. Probably would not want the screw drive in the mud though... might have to put a gear case around it to protect it. That would make it safer also... Really cool idea. Hope you get this solved!

That's awesome. I hope you kept with it. Those exposed chains and sprockets are an open invitation for stones and such to jam up the works though. Ideally a hydraulic solution or a sealed induction motor or maybe a repurposed power takeoff for each screw would be better. Maybe throw something in there to slip before stuff breaks then apply power on both ends of each pontoon with a taller screw thread so less contact area on harder surfaces makes it less likely to get locked. I don't think you'll ever be able to tackle an approach or departure angle that acute outside of deep sand or snow though. At least not unless you use four shorter pontoons that can move a bit independently of the frame and each other, maybe throw a shock and spring on each corner as well as a flexable Ujoint where the middle of each pontoon is now with a shock linking it to the frame. Otherwise you'll have to stick to relatively even ground with smooth grade transitions. Must be a pain to try and tow that thing on ground when it's broke down. Maybe include a couple skis/slats you can jack down to make recovery a little easier.

I think the larger diameter pods will help. it should spread the weight and you won't sink in as deeply into things which is where the large amount of torque was used. with more surface area the vehicle should float across services more easily. one other thing I thought of rather than using chains and sprockets on the end of the pods, what about using a hydraulic drive unit at the end of it. it would be mechanically more simple you could have an engine with a hydraulic pump and then the hydraulic drive units. keep working on it it's an interesting design and certainly has advantages over wheeled and track vehicles. these things were used in Russia and other places get over terrain with no other vehicle could get to. good work on the mechanicals by the way. Always fun to see someone build something and try to make it work.

kens97sto171 Good Day kens97sto171 . This drive mechanism is is what I thought up about 20 yrs ago , it'sa very intriguing ; helicoidal drive , screw drew drive , spiral drive . Just like a mechanical "helicoil" I, m an aircraft technician since 1980 , I went through college for tool & die design and started out out in Military Turbine engine . Toronto , Ontario , Canada . When you're explaining an idea to engineers or tool & die makers it always works to make use of an example . Could you please extrapolate with this example of hydraulic drive in this application ? . Do you mean a torque converter drive ?

If you ever decide to try and make it hydrostatic, look at getting a pump and some drive motors from a skidsteer loader like a bobcat, or one of those small mini-excevators. Maybe find one that has a blown engine or something. If you add a bypass loop with a high pressure valve, you should avoid it blowing up on you too. Besides, with hydrostatic drives, you could also do neat stuff like roll sideways 'n' stuff. :)

REDNIC79 one advantage I have is 45 years working on or building stuff so I have a good background. I would say make your pods about 4 feet longer and the helix pitch about half of what it was. By making it longer you will have room to put in failsafe in the system. I would look using belts for steering clutches and that would be your safety.

@RyanQuintanapolymath

I bet you can keep going with the idea the only issue is that you have to get specially made thicker parts that can handle the torque. think huge mining drills and how thick the parts are basically you would be making a new tank like machine at the end of everything

Do it like a zero turn radius mower. Engine powers a hydraulic pump. Hydraulic pump drives two hydraulic motors (one each direct drive to the screws). You then have forward and reverse by moving which way the oil gets to each motor.

My thoughts were you need 3 or 4 pontoons, not just the 2. that way there will be no chance of getting high centered in the mud.

next time you try, instead of putting the drive train at the very end you should put it in the middle of your screws. it will even out the weight and pull on the screws and give you more direct flow of your power.

What about running a hydraulic pump off the engine to 2 separate hydraulic motors on the pods? It would simplify things and you'll have better control without the need for brakes and your weak points of shafts, chains and sprockets. I understand that it's not a cheap gamble, but it's more forgiving and much easier to control with a 2 lever valve system. Having forward and reverse all run by hydraulics is just a better engineering aspect and independent drive motors running off a central pump would be best. I'd recommend a log splitter style 2 stage 16gpm or larger that way the pump won't overrun the engines power when your load changes aka for hills or pulling heavy loads. The 2 stage acts like an automatic transmission and will downshift to less flow more pressure under heavy loads and switch back on its own when you are just traveling on flat runs. IDK just a thought. I'm an engineer for a living, and if I were doing something like this, that would be the way I would have gone. I wish you the best of luck and would like to see it eventually work out for ya.

It will work on absolutely level and hard ground only .When it gets bogged down it cannot haul itself up because the drive track is longitudinal

cool build! I'd vote for hydraulic drives on the back of each screw instead of chain/sprocket. Way cleaner, nothing for sticks and stones to jam. Hoping to see this going again. Good luck.

+REDNIC79 one thing I've learned over the years is that mechanical systems need a way to "flex" or "give" or else something will break. Hydraulics are nice in this regard because the fluid is like a spring and shock absorber. If doing chains, maybe look for a way to add a clutch or something which can give before things break. Fingers crossed your new drive system works so then you can get on with some suspension. :-) Good luck and looking forward to more videos.

What if you attached a hydraulic pump to the motor and had a hydraulic motor for each tube spiral thing and ran it through some valving to control the speed of each side independently to steer and for speed control? That may eliminate so much mechanical stress on the frame and drive train and it would only have the force on what holds the hydraulic motor in place? I have no clue what I am talking about but would seem a lot simpler and reduces a lot of torque points down to a couple, and don't have to worry about mud and debris collecting in the chains causing problems/failures and further resistance for the motor and drive train components. Looks like some good and cool work you did putting it together, awesome project!!!! Thank you for sharing : )

this is the first time seeing the screw tractor, idont know if it was mentioned before, but what if the chain was connected on the middle part of the screw shaft instead of the rear. make some kind cutout in the middle. it will look like you have 4 short screw shaft instead of two long shafts.
