Facebook live Recast for the Scribble and Dribble abstract Face.
Faces are really about the shadow of the eye and the hairlines. Think about fuzzy blurry member of your family out of a rainy window! Even though they are a blur you know them. It can be so hard to lighten up and get out of our own heads. To just be with the process and let go of the result. This week is about that. Can we let go ? Can we Scribble and Drizzle our way to a more relaxed way of seeing the world.
The first part of quest 7 will cover the Scribble Face. Together you and I will grab a pencil and paper and just SCRIBBLE SCRIBBLE SCRIBBLE. Yes you can start with a light trace if you like. Very light so that the process of finding the face in the scribble works for you. The Result is NOT the goal. Letting go is the goal. Letting your left brain flow away and your right Brain take front and center. Let the emotion of the subject dance and move into the paper

I used to make so-called scribble cartoons in school. Maybe it's time I tried again! Though they'll never be as good as my drunken paintings!

Stacey, hi. :D If you really want to do realism correctly, you have to embrace imperfections, cause there is NOTHING in nature that is perfect!

One thing that really helped me let go, was (out loud ) giving myself permission to be less than perfect! And realizing that for true realism I had to embrace imperfection since there is nothing in nature that is perfect. Besides, perfection is unattainable so why make myself crazy over something that is impossible???

Hi...I was wondering if you could demonstrate the second face on your sketch pad...faces intimate me but would love to try both...my husband laughed and said I will have a meltdown when trying this because I have a major control issue! thank you so much for all you guys do!

sometimes a meltdown is just what the doctor ordered. :D Getting that left side perfection loving side to shut up and let the right side do what it does best will do more for your art than just about anything else you can do! :D

do you think it is better to draw at an easel? or a board slanted on props? I have always heard to draw flat causes distortion. could you clarify what is best, so I can start drawing correctly please. sorry forgot to ask these questions . again thanks to you and john. do you like the bigger pencils as well? are they better over the regular size? sorry lots of questions, just trying to learn. I love the faces in your book.

I have drawn both flat and on an easel. Honestly, you should draw however is most comfortable to your body. For me, that is on a draftsman's table. It is tilted at a slight angle and reduces the tension in my shoulders and back. As for the pencils, again, it is a question of what feels best in YOUR hand. I like a regular size pencil because I have less tension in my hands with them than a small mechanical pencil or a large pencil. When you finally fall into the right side drawing meditative state, you tend to lose track of time, so you need to make sure that you practice good posture, and are as comfortable as possible. And make sure you set a timer to remind you to get up, stretch, move your legs and arms and shoulders. If you sit too long you can cause edema in your legs. ( No joke! ) so make sure you get up and move for your health. I hope this helps you. :)

I remember trying to do those 'don't lift your pencil' drawings and to be honest I wanted to rip my hair out doing them. I am so controlling about my art and I wanted those clean lines. I do have an odd question though: I don't know if maybe I'm missing something but are our believe faces suppose to all look the same/similar or is that a me problem? Is it just they will begin to look more individual as we come into realism more? Cause right now I feel like all of mine are pretty much the same person with very minor differences... or it is the anime I grew up on sneaking in again... sorry I ramble when I start questioning things.

They do look much the same because you are working with a set of symbols that your left brain has stored for what a face looks like. This is perfectly normal and everyone does it until they learn how to let the right side take over and draw what it sees not a stored symbol for what your left side THINKS it sees.

Bridget Browning Try drawing two circles on top of each other with light pencil. the bottom circle being only slightly smaller than the top one. and then draw in the jaw line.
