She used to be a student in Shanghai Foreign Language Institute so she had an outstanding English language background when she arrived at the new continent. She is smart and international. In 80’s, some Chinese pretended to be inferior to the west by somewhat depreciating their own motherland, so to get some favour , such as friendship , acknowledging, identifying etc.from westerners. This phenomena has changed since China has developed so well in the past three decades. Chen Chong also has a luxurious home in Shanghai now, her home city in China, I guess, from some TV program, she dwells in San Francisco now, though. She is fine.

I had lived in the States before and now in Australia. I prefer staying in Australia because America is always full of people like him. The way Americans interact with you just makes you feel even more like an alien. They have no clue what they should or shouldn't say and they just think America is the best country ever and everything should just revolve around them. In general I just don't like the showy and overconfident attitude of Americans in comparison to the down-to-earth, considerate attitudes of Aussies.

That was a really difficult time for China and the USA, you could see how did the host make fun of the American-Chinese actress who was famous for the movie: The Last Emperor. The way he interrupted her without respect and joked about the poverty of China was so rude and astonishing.

I think American talk shows always handle guests from other countries pretty poorly, so I think Letterman's attitude is a reflection of that.

@joy2000cyber4 жыл бұрын
I am from China which was a remote barbarian conservative country at the time. Letterman did homework about China, but the actress is from a very well educated family who know western culture and language very well. The actress majored in English from the best foreign language university of China herself. Then She accidentally became a movie star. She is just extremely privileged and lucky comparing to her peers in China

Meh - when a guest isn't offering much by way of elaborating on anything, all he can do is keep asking questions. Chen is nice, and very beautiful, but she didn't have much to say and seemed to be still learning English.
@ultrustic4 жыл бұрын
Tell jokes is Letterman's forte, but his shows don't do well on vetting questions and feed to the guests. Thereby it helps leading the guest to fully tell the story. Never known for carrying questions either, so it doesn't help as the segment looks disjointed like many of the previous ones. Letterman's best guests tends to be story tellers who know how to liven up.
@JinghaoTong4 жыл бұрын
@@WalterLiddy What's wrong with you? That was an invitation for her, if he wanted to ask questions, he should learn how to listen carefully. Haven't you seen how rudely he was when he interrupted her suddenly just after she said the first sentence? It's shocking in 1988, man could talk like that with a lady, in 2020, these audiences would get angry for his rudeness. By the way, what a big deal of English, she could express herself and got her citizenship, but she didn't get any respect.

I agree letterman sounds like an immigration officer. In 1980s, some US citizens have bias about China and Chinese. Nevertheless, at that time they can not image how great China is going to be now. At moment Who doesn’t want a Chinese tourist to come to shop in their countries? I think Chen hasn’t answered all her questions positively and showing much of affection for her birth city or country. If I were interviewed at my 20s, I may answer questions politically wrong; in fact, trump is over 70 yr now, his interview answers sometime makes me cringe. Now if I was interviewed by letterman with the same question, I would ask him to respect any non US culture or human beings. However, letterman’s current interview is less sarcastic and showed is more professional than in 1980s.
