Brother thank you so much I’ve been following your work for a long while now and I don’t think I could really articulate the impact that your studies have had on my life. I recognize the irony in saying that haha. Thank you so much and God bless you and the family!

Will you please consider making a video on theology of the name of God?

Because OT sacrifices were mentioned, why does the Church reject penal substitution? I know the basis isn’t only because the end result is ultimately nestorianism, but it’s also because (as I’ve heard it and will paraphrase) “God doesn’t require a sacrifice to forgive us.” How then does that view hold up to OT sacrifices? Didn’t God require these to forgive his people? I’m an Orthodox inquirer and certainly reject penal substitution. Still, doesn’t God require sacrifices in the OT? Thank you 😄

The Psalms repeatedly say that God does not require material sacrifice, and that the sacrifice of a contrite heart and the sacrifice of praise are the only ones with meaning. That doesn't mean that material sacrifice in the OT was a bad thing, but it was for the benefit of man (it puts material things in their proper place). It is not for God's need/benefit, God does not need anything. And it is only for our benefit if done in repentance.

I think it's a bit more complicated than simply rejecting penal substitution. In certain ways, Orthodoxy affirms that Christ took our penalty (death) to secure our pardon in the resurrection. I go into this in a video on this subject here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZashml_japmgsk
