The Valyrian Freehold sounds like a fusion of Rome and Atlantis. Yes, I know Atlantis didn't actually exist, but the civilization that correlates the most to Atlantis was ancient Thera (modern day Santorini). Thera was an advanced civilization, it was a land of plenty, had hot springs, it was a trading empire, it had a link to Egypt, and it came to a catastrophic end with a volcanic eruption so loud that it was said to have been heard as far away as China.

Wow, great history lesson. I rarely learn true history from comments on KZbin but I did here and will probably remember it too!
@josephstclair5937 Жыл бұрын
Seems pretty definitive. How can we prove something didn't exist? I trust Greek historians over the modern.
@KTChamberlain Жыл бұрын
@@josephstclair5937 Have you ever noticed that there are no external mentions of Atlantis prior to Plato? Plato was a philosopher, not a historian, and even then some of Plato's theories have been debunked like how he thought humans were "featherless bipeds." Even if Plato was an historian, his talks about Athens' history have long since been disproven. If that's unreliable, then how can I rely on what he says about Atlantis? Homer may not have been an historian, but at least a lot of what he wrote about Troy and Mycenae have been vindicated since the 1800's.
@josephstclair5937 Жыл бұрын
@@KTChamberlain Well you'd be ignoring secondary sources which talk about other works citing it which were lost during the fire of the Library of Alexandria. We are discovering new things about our history every year. The absence of just a single type of written account isn't determinative. Plenty of history was passed orally. Some would argue similar architecture and the presence of complex trade networks supports the notion of an pan-Atlantic civilization.
@KTChamberlain Жыл бұрын
@@josephstclair5937 And you're ignoring that it's kinda trendy for historians to exaggerate the impact of the fire of the Library of Alexandria in 48 BC. Oh, don't get me wrong, it was unfortunate, but the Library would continue to operate for centuries, ultimately being destroyed for reasons that had nothing to do with the Siege of Alexandria. Plato was a philosopher, telling a story meant to spark philosophical debate, not historicity because once you start trying to analyze from that standpoint, then it falls apart, completely missing the point.

James Butler if you have read the books, Valarian Steel was forged from the dragons fire and dragon glass.
@jamesbutler57326 жыл бұрын
Christine Mott I’m pretty sure no one, even in the books, knows how to make it.
@christinemott14396 жыл бұрын
James Butler Valyrian steel could not physically be made because dragons disappeared and no one knew about dragon glass. You need two ingredients as it's states that have just made there way back after being gone for thousands of years. I have read all the books twice and it states that you need dragons fire and dragon glass. When it's heated the valyraian steel molds almost too easily. It's near perfection.
@jamesbutler57326 жыл бұрын
Christine Mott that literally makes no sense, dragon glass just turns to steel? Literally no one knows how to make Valerian steel. Not even the song of ice and fire wiki knows.
@christinemott14396 жыл бұрын
James Butler Bahahahahaha did you say you searched it through the song of ice and fire portal? That's funny. READ THE BOOKS. I could go on and on about mining the dragon glass, what it was used for, how the the slaves mined it, but I have no idea what I'm talking about. What's the point obviously you have your answer. Safe journey to you good sir.

Valyria has immense parallels to Rome. They're both peninsulas, they both rose to prominence after fighting a series of wars against the reigning dominant power in the region. They both destroyed said powers capital and salted the ground. They both used massive amounts of slave labor from conquered peoples. They both built long lasting road networks whose construction techniques were lost after they each fell. They both left enduring, prominent cultural legacies behind them. I think GRRM basically made Valyria fantasy Rome.
