I wanted a spooky scroll saw picture for Halloween so I drew the Batman villain Scarecrow and turned him into wood! This is all made with a scroll saw using natural wood colors. No stain, paint, or dye was used for the colors.
I used walnut for most of Scarecrow’s head. His eyes and teeth are made from holly. The rope around his neck is white oak. The fear gas surrounding him is lignum vitae. The background is maple and the negative space is wenge.
I like to make my own picture frames for my scroll saw projects. This frame is made from maple and canary wood.

Thanks! I was shocked at how long this took me to do. I also have COVID so progress was SLOW.

I used to do scroll saw art in high school. Seeing you make your art is giving me the itch to get back into it. Not even sure who makes good saws anymore though.

A quick Google search will give you some saw brands. It's a fun hobby and wood tends to go a long way depending on the size of the project.

Sean, I am just getting back into it as well. I found a used saw for $75 on FB marketplace. Well actually my wife did. I am excited to try these techniques. Billy is an inspiration.

Why do you use MDF? If it was my project, and I was going to put as much effort into it as you did, I would have used either Baltic birch plywood or a solid wenge back panel although the final product looks amazing regardless of the back. Additionally, was the walnut slab from that video of you chainsaw milling a tree in your neighbour's front yard?

You say that like MDF is a subpar material. MDF is fantastic for this sort of project and it's often used in high end items like humidors. You could certainly use Baltic Birch, though I haven't seen it as consistently flat as MDF. I did not use a solid wenge panel because I wanted to glue the panel into the frame. If it was solid wood it would have to float in the frame. And yep! This was that amazing walnut tree that we milled up. So beautiful!

Any chance you can tell us where you source your lignum vitae? All I can find is online is pen blank sizes….

Woodcraft or search online for verawood. It's often called that instead.

Billy m8 this is probably one of the nicest ones ave seen you do not that there not all beautiful because they are but think this is my fav the detail you managed capture in them gotta say amazing. Personally though think this could of been a project that you could of tried my Danish oil recommendation on would of made the green gas wood parts pop even more!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍 Ps when's my ideas coming to life from groanings characters?
@NewtonMakesArt

I was going to use an oil. I didn't like how it changed the color of the holly in my test boards. It got a bit too yellow. Otherwise, I would have went with Danish or teak oil. Perhaps next time. Groaning characters would be a challenge. There can be a lot of details. Which one do you prefer?

@@NewtonMakesArt it's gotta be homer and spider pig combo from the Simpsons movie or maybe bender or Dr zoidberg from Futurama. Think the Danish oil would have been perfect for that recently used it for some chesnut and elm serving boards brought the grain out beautifully and kept the exact colour of them even brushed on round the burly bits looked wicked 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
