Oh yes! It was so great when he reprised his role doing the voice acting in the Oscar winning (I believe) animated rendition in the early 70s. Great shot in that back alley-way BTW, as Cratchet went in to work. Very cold. Very bleak.

The only movie that understood what the novel was all about. The rest were black comedies and got very cartoony. I know it's about ghosts, but still. Alastair Sim played Scrooge like he was an actual person and he was believable both when he was supposed to be a complete jerk with PTSD and a reformed one after his transformation. And that's what the movie does so well. It doesn't just make Scrooge a comic book villain who has a change of heart after having the hell scared out of him. He's a guy who had numerous awful things happen to him and his motivation for being the way he is is understandable. He's more relatable as a person here than in any other movie. This is the best version because I think a lot of people can say they know THIS Scrooge. The guy who felt betrayed and deeply hurt by humanity and became almost a sociopath as a defence mechanism to protect himself from further emotional and psychological trauma and harm. The visitations were basically an intense, psychedelic therapy session. Obviously, therapy doesn't work like that in real life, even psychedelic ones, and it's a process, but it would be nice if it did. In the other versions, mostly we just see a miserly old man who is grouchy and hates Christmas just for the sake of hating it. Here, he's a fleshed out human being with actual motivations for his behaviour. I don't sympathize with any other Scrooge but this one.

Wow! That was an awesome analysis! I will arguably say this is my favorite movie of all time (granted, I have not seen many movies). I have never seen this movie from the lens you have provided, but it makes so much sense. This is a movie I could watch in July, as well as December. It is timeless (the story). If you have read the book, this movie (as most) take artistic license and add/change the original story. My favorite in the Simm version is the fleshing out of the ghost of Christmas past. The book says that Scrooge was the elder, and his sister was younger. Yet to paint the hurtful past of Scrooge, the movie shows that Scrooge's sister was older, and died giving birth to Scrooge's nephew - just like Scrooge's mother died while giving birth to Scrooge. The resentment of Scrooge's nephew now becomes evident as to the loss of the only person who ever loved Scrooge (his sister), and that his (Scrooge's) father never forgave him for the death of his mother during childbirth. There are more additions to the Ghost of Christmas past not in the book - namely the development of the relationship between Scrooge & Marley - but it all fits, as to the the ultimate Scrooge character we see. Simply glorious and redemptive. What a movie! As a complete non - sequitur, my favorite line in the movie is Scrooge saying to Cratchit - "I'll retire to bedlam" I use this very often in this modern world I can't understand.
@johnmh1000

Very deeply understood. At the risk of sounding patronising you have engaged all of my understanding of this complex man. He's eventually a winner, and seems like he knows it. The fact that this story takes place at Christmastime just adds to the deep emotions all those involved feel and understand.

Plenty is rightly made of Alaister Sims performance, he is for me the definitive Scrooge, yet in this scene Mervyn Johns acting is equally remarkable, his look of utter disbelief tinged with just the slight hope that what hes hearing from Scrooge is actually true, is incredible. A well made and finely acted film that even 72 years later is an essential.part of Christmas

So , did you all do the tradition again this year ? What is also so cool is the history and background of the writing of this novel and Charles Dickens who was a very good Christian the way I understand. I have learned he was the only author in history to see the fruits of his labor in this novel in that the story was so popular that about 7 years later Business folks and Employers were letting their employees off from work on Christmas Day. Charles Dickens was able to see the results of his work , A Christmas Carol

I do digress but I absolutely loved this movie back in the day that I was a young buck; and that was 1970s and 1980s and I still love this. I can't watch it though because of sentimental reasons . The difficult part for me, is that he was a moneylender before the ghosts, and still a moneylender after them. And being a moneylender is a hard, hard business. You have to be willing to put the screws to anyone who doesn’t pay up, and it’s the interest that they have to pay the most, if you’re going to make a profit. I would love to read a novel about the five years after his change, and about how he found a way to make peace with his own business.

How anyone could think any other film rendition of Dickens' hauntingly joyous tale is better than this one is beyond me.

It never ceases to amaze me that for the most part we get Scrooge wrong. Today his name is used in disparaging tones and slanderous contempt but in fact he is the hero. God bless us. Everyone.

I know it's a bit early to starting talking about Christmas, but things have been happening to me lately that as the character Scrooge says during his Transformation after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future and realizing he's been given a second chance at life...... "... I don't deserve to be so happy.... But I can't help it..... I just can't help it. ..." I'm not sure when I would have first watched this movie, definitely as an impressionable child. But it has always been my favorite Christmas movie..... perhaps only now being blessed by a "transformation" of sorts in my own life. I was telling a friend a few days ago that, "it's taken me all my life to get here." 😳 No, that last statement is not meant to be a Yogi Berra'ism. .... only that the spiritual world will not bestow any such gifts until one is ready to understand and appreciate them. I know there will be plenty of more forks in the road (and Yogi knew instinctively what to do when he's found one) just as Robert Frost, my favorite American poet, knew what to do when those "...Two roads diverged in a wood. I took the one less traveled by.." happen to come up. Personally, my gut tells me that there are beings, dimensions ... souls that are helping us make our decisions..... no we're definitely not alone in the Universe..... and I am enjoying the heck out of my journeys these days..... Crying (it's my Italian heritage showing) out of pure joy... I've been crying a lot lately.... appreciating every breathing moment... "God bless us, every one". Peace 🙏

Well spoken friend ....but it's s never too early, or for that matter, too late to talk about Christmas I've watched this version for as long as I can remember..my mother and I watched it every Christmas Eve for a great many years ... unfortunately I have watched it the last 13 Christmases without her ..I watch it whenever I feel like it not just at Christmas .....this movie should not be confined to Christmas....to me it is by far the superior version but I will watch all versions with the same respect

Thx witzelasper2821. I am sorry for your loss.... but we all pass on from this physical realm we are in.... what if you considered something.... who do you think is reminding you to watch this incredible film and story about the human condition? 😉I'm sure you feel blessed for having such a wise mom. Peace. 🙏 @@witzelasper2821

Thx. I am sorry for your loss, but we all leave this physical realm.... What if you were to look at it this way. Who do you think has been encouraging you to watch this film these last 13 years? We should all feel blessed for having such wise and caring moms. ... and remember what Christmas is all about... or at least what it was all about when Dickens conceived it. Christmas is about giving.... and Scrooge was so fortunate to be given what I consider a second chance at life....and the gift of attaining a higher consciousness which he know doubt bestowed on those he loved. ... much more meaningful than just worldly possessions don't you think? I know you do. Peace my friend. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 @@witzelasper2821
