According to the writers on this episode's commentary track, the original idea for the end of this storyline was the professor opening the draw to reveal the gun, then it cuts to Abed walking down the hallway and the sound of a gunshot rings out, Abed pauses walking a moment while people rush past him toward the classroom, then Abed slowly starts walking again looking straight ahead. Apparently the network executives thought that was a little dark for some reason... 🤣

I have more sympathy for the professor than most I think, I imagine most academics who have studied something for years come across people daily who think they know better or can gleam some insight that no one else can, it just so happens that Abed is basically a human graphing computer and in this case does know better, I feel like they should have made the professor more of a dick, he just came across as a passionate guy who is probably a bit tired of being talked back to on what most would consider to be a rhetorical question

You know what's great about community? Aside from the easy answer, everything, I think my #1 is that it portrays the "nerd" character or even the character who might be easily classified as on the autism spectrum as a hero. Abed is the guy who gets it right, got it right, and who we look up to and root for. In contrast to shows like TBBT, which I hate, classify nerds as different, weird, to be mocked, or in general worse than the average person. Sheldon is practically smeagol, and that is sad.
@Tantalus0102 жыл бұрын
But we ARE different and weird and we were being mocked LONG before TBBT came out. Plus, despite your characterization, lots of people love Sheldon. The thing that TBBT did was that it made people more aware of and comfortable talking to physicists. Prior to that, they'd just avoid us like the plague. Now people will ask me if I'm a Leonard or a Sheldon. I'm neither, but hey, it's progress.
@SioxerNikita2 жыл бұрын
Erm... Abed is consistently mocked as part of Community. Also don't look up to Abed. He is emotionally manipulative, straight up gaslights people and breaks people's personal boundaries constantly, and mostly not because he doesn't know, mostly he is aware what he is doing is bad, and yet he does it deliberately. Abed is not a "good characterization" of the "nerd" character. He is bad, like most of the other characters in Community. These are people you would scorn and stay away from in real life. They are egotistical psychopaths who barely has a care for anyone else in the world. And The Big Bang Theory? It simplified the nerd culture down into a more digestible format for the average viewer. This is also why the majority of nerdy references are very pop culture known. Spiderman, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, etc, with far more nerdy stuff occasionally. It was never made to be an accurate representation, but it did succeed in showing people that nerds can be quite nice. It shows that even a hot Arizona Trashbag can care for nerds, without truly understanding them. Sheldon is also one of the most consistently adored characters on the show, so I have no idea why you are comparing him to Smeagol? There is a lot of character growth, and accurately it does show severely autistic people can seem very self centered, since some aren't really able to consider anything but themselves. Their mode of thinking is so different that it is almost impossible for them to understand the rest of the world. So his representation has helped autistic people being understood.

Having just trawled youtube all night for community clips since im going through withdrawals while waiting for feb 7, I've just something quite remarkable, the comments section for almost all the clips are filled with positive, supportive and hilarious material from people who clearly love and care for the show. Such a rare thing on youtube, something I wish was emulated more on other vids.. maybe we're just streets ahead. haha

Having never watched "Who's The Boss?", this premise amused me. Having now watched some of "Who's The Boss?", this premise absolutely slays me. The piano version of the theme song that plays when Professor Sheffield's world was shattered... brilliant, lol! I unironically sympathize with Professor Sheffield's passion though. "Who's The Boss?" is a show worth pursuing, academically.

I like the first laugh sounding like canned laughter and abed's essentialy meaningless teachable moment leading into sentimental music. They could have done more I think like someone being surprised that the class is so full and it's because it follows a much more popular class.

In season 1 episode 16, Abed says he never got past the opening credits of Who's The Boss. This episode occurs towards the middle/end of season 2 and Abed's been on the wait list for 1.5 years. He's in the second semester of his second year and hadn't actually watched Who's The Boss in the second semester of his first year, so he's been on the wait list since before he watched the show.
