Shift the tcase into 4x4 to break bolts if you dont have someone to help. So long as the trans is in park it wont spin

Hello , Great refresher video . I will be removing my transfer case because the front input seal is slowly leaking transmission fluid into my transfer case . Transmission fluid was low opened fill plug on transfer case and it poured out . Have heard this can be catastrophic to the trans and case with different fluids mixing at improper levels . Always open your fill plug first . One to be sure you will be able to fill when ready and two fast diagnosis if input shaft is bad on transfer case. Have a great day .

Danny Johnson Your welcome, I mean it. I probably need to replace my tc and your video gives me a good idea on what to expect. Btw. I got some grinding/vibration at low speeds. I got the truck on the jacks and get none of that. There is significant play in the tc though. Particularly in the front end. Does it sound like it is the transfer case?

Why? Because they are the same dopes that would never attempt the job themselves, take theirs to the nearest mechanic, and at the same time talk as though they know everything. Their idea of a well equipped tool box is an adjustable 10" Crescent, pair of pliers, screwdriver(maybe more than one, but not necessarily), and a hammer.

great video. I was about to take off transfer case from transmission. I noticed there is a latch type thing connected to transfer case that is also attached to transmission which I believe to be a spacer on transmission in between transfer case and transmission.

They balance driveshafts on a machine, not in the vehicle. Orientation of the driveshaft with the tcase is not inportant to the balance of the shaft.

They do, but it also has to do with how it wears on the vehicle- so I’ve been told. May be a myth

I have a question. I know its not suppose to, but the front drive shaft on a 2012 Ford Mark LT 4x4 has a lot of play approximately 1/4 of a turn. The shaft connected to the differential and the front rear shaft connected to the transfer case. What do you think? Transfer case needs to be replaced? & What about the front? Do you think the gears are bad or where the axle is connected to the the front driveshaft. Awesome video by the way. I can send you a video if you'd like.

I would put it i to 4 wheel drive and then check the play (be careful doing so of course and make sure it’s in park before getting under it).

Daniel Hinkle YES! Though the transfer case isn’t perfectly flat on the bottom I was able to put the chain over it and keep it tight. I installed both the transfer case (and the entire transmission as well) by myself with the transmission jack. (I would not recommend doing it alone but I did it). Isidro Lucero I’m not sure if there is a part number or not. I would try to pull one from the most similar year you can. Maybe you can find a part number when you remove your old one

The transfer case should have a small metal tag bolted to the bottom of it with identification info

They are externally balanced so it shouldn’t really matter, but some people do just so it is how it came off. These videos came from the f150 getting a new transmission so it won’t be the exact same as it came off

I do not know what year the truck you are working on is, But my F-150 has a cross brace for the torsion bars and needs to be removed to take out the transfercase. This video does not show the brace on the truck near the transfercase.

Preston Pearson This was a 2008 As I recall. Is yours factory or does it have a lift kit? On the nissan transmission video I have it had cross braces, but they were aftermarket

Preston Pearson They must have had a different cross brace. Other than that, the process itself should be the same. I changed the transmisión in the video without a manual after changing a transmission from a suburban. It’s all the same process

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage It is more of a process with the cross brace as the cross brace has the tension bars attached to it. That is where I am stuck without the tension bar tool. All that has been done so far is removal of tranfercase guard. And the price of the tool which will only be used once for each tension bar is costly.

Yes, it does share the same fluid, so keep track on how much comes out. It wont lose a lot but it does share

It went well. You can follow my videos on it. It’s nearly the same process. You might just have to work around some sway bars and things that are in a different location, but otherwise it’s the same process shown in the link above

Jojo Gut You can also drop it down as one piece. On the nissan frontier I just did we dropped it as one piece with the transmission. If you’re doing it alone it may be easier to break it up into smaller pieces
