Bach makes me want to learn German, so that I can understand the true magnificence of his works
@CatatonicImperfect Жыл бұрын
It's actually really hard to make out the words from the singing, when I want to understand it, I look up the text. Then it's usually religious stuff and sometimes weird old-timey words. The English translations are usually in more contemporary language and easier to understand. Some channels here on KZbin put subtitles in the videos, which is nice. The Swiss Bachstiftung has recently started doing that.

@@CatatonicImperfect In my opinion, making out the words is not so hard in the opening chorus of this cantata. The same goes for many recitatives and certain arias. I think it is worthwhile to at least try to make out the words as you read the text. The music often closely mirrors what is being said (just compare the sorrowful "Elend" with the uplifting "alsdenn wird dein Licht").

The text is Isaiah 58:7-8 "Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot/Break your bread to the hungry ..." It continues 9: "Then you will call, and the LORD shall answer; you will cry, and he shall say: Here I am" and the most wonderful 11: "... you shall be like a watered garden". It's all about focussing outwards, not inwards, the key to mental healing. Sadly the opposite is fashionable nowadays.

It's incredible that Bach died virtually a pauper. His wife didn't have enough money to pay for his tombstone, just a wooden box is all she could afford. She was turned out of their home and had to live on handouts for the rest of her life.

@leonhardtdenis98295 жыл бұрын
@benoistveillerette12214 жыл бұрын
