The spot dance joke starting around 1:20 was very subtle and genius. Mel begins to talk about doing a spot dance and the group reacts as if they don’t know what he’s talking about. He then asks them to raise their hands if anyone in the group remembers what a spot dance is and they all raise their hands. Then they start asking him what a spot dance is.

A few summers ago I was working on a gravel crusher. The loader guy's name was Mel and he would take the boulders that were too big away from the infeed and put them in a pile on the side of the site. Needless to say anytime anyone said "Mel's Rock Pile" including myself, I would crack up. Everyone there was too young to get the joke.

I read somewhere that they moved to a fully completed TV station that only did morning agriculture news, in Edmonton(?). They worked constantly, because there was, like, 18 hours of darkness and nothing else to do. They had a rule that if it was shorter than 5 minutes, IT WAS IN THE SHOW.

This show was so close to real local disco shows that it was barely satire!

The Fishing Musician, Monster Chiller Horror Theatre, Great White North. Comedy Masterpieces. I remember Mel's Rockpile with parody of Richard Harris(Dave Thomas)doing MaCarthur Park. I almost peed in my pants.Great White North made me want to try some back bacon and some Molson beer. Seriously, if you've never tried true Back Bacon it is good and very lean. The Americanized version is Canadian Bacon which is not true Back Bacon as the version of back bacon I tried was different. Molson beer is an acquired taste as it is stronger than a lot of American beer. After a few cans in a few minutes you don't notice the taste...... hiccup, belch, burp

These SCTV guys were tremendous actors. Unlike the SNL people who read off their cue cards, while they look past each other and wait for the pinheads in the studio audience to laugh.
