I was supposed to "work at home" this afternoon and then I saw Mark's new video... I guess it's part of my marine biologist job to keep myself updated with diving stuff ;-)

Piezo switch works with a pyzoelectric cristal. When a piezoelectric crystel is moved or being pressed it emits an electric charge. So that how the switch know. It also work the other way round. When you send an electric charge through a piezoelectric crystal you get a change in it's size.

I picked bolt snaps but Greeat, just after purchase my 1st torch Mares eos 5rz was thinking 10rz be better primary For the tropics SEA Found a fairly good deal on 5rz So after buying, concerned this will just end up a pricey back up But reassured after you shine your insightful light on what lumens required for all scenarios 👍 including functionality Re excited for 5rz arrival possibly today Now bolt snaps Just order those too Xdeep nx, im sure you'll agree especially when a few quid under usp

I bought the Simply Scuba MK1 and I've been very satisfied with it so far. I now use it as a backup since I bought an Orcatorch D611 as a primary that I can't wait to test out.

Looks like you have the Simply Scuba Mk1 torch there (or its OEM version). I bought mine end of last year and it's a cracking bit of kit; the 1000 lumen max is as good as many primaries and the lower power, SOS and strobe modes easy to use. Love it!

I love my little MK1. It's basically an Exposure Marine Action torch that they built a custom body for us.

Kinetic looks like a sure way to appear to be signaling distress... And eventually fall victim to the "boy who cried wolf" problem, as buddies learn to ignore your erratic beam.

How do you light a torch under water? My matches never seems to work. I've found the battery-powered UK dive lights to work quite well.

My 2 cents of opinion... The (closed rechargeable system) torches MUST be carried with you IN the cabin luggage (because they contain the rechargeable batteries). BUT the (medium to) larger versions (as the one you show) are nowadays FORBIDDEN to take with you in the cabin... So , these (medium to larger ones) can no longer be taken with you on diving holidays (when you depart from Belgian airport , maybe also from other countries airports)... Reason (they say at check-in) : you can use this as a weapon... (sorry for my poor english , I speak dutch)

Lumen doesn't measure how bright the light is, but how much light it produces. A 500 lumen torch with an 8° beam angle is much brighter than a 500 lumen torch with a 110° beam angle. The same amount of light is distributed over a much wider area wit a 110° beam angle. The measure for brightness is Candela, but very few manufacturers list that value. Lux is a measure of how much light hits an object, so it depends on the object what the Lux value is. Most lights have a hot spot. This is fantastic for signalling, but it's really bad for videos. For videos you want an evenly spread light so everything in the frame is lit equally. Conversely, a video light is terrible for signalling. If you're diving in murky water, you want a tight beam to punch through. A wide beam will just create a wall of light and prevent you from seeing anything.

Great stuff Mark. But please don't promote GloSticks. This is only more pollution, which as we know usually ends up in the ocean somewhere. If you need a "find my way home light", for your students, maybe invest in a few reuseables and charge the extra few pennies to the course cost.

Soft goodman-style handles are not fast and easy to take off (and put it back on...) as compared to normal metal ones, especially when you use thick gloves. Edit: regulating light intensity with those frantic movements - what a torch! lol. I've never seen anything like this, and can't imagine how to use it. If you start doing those movements, you would eventually get a lot of attention and scare your buddy! "Sorry, I just want to make my light a bit brighter!". It's a disaster.

Is there any way to convert lux to lumens?
@SafeDiving
@SafeDiving 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it's not very fun. Lux is the amount of light that illuminates a certain area at a given distance. So 1 Lux is the equivalent to 1 Lumen spread over 1 square meter 1 meter away. This is why most manufacturers just use Lumens...

What is your opinion for the Orcatorch D520?
@vaidas777
@vaidas777 4 жыл бұрын
Orcatorch D520 is a great torch. Small and extremely powerful. One disadvantage is that you turn it on by rotating the body. Turning it off means you effectively slightly opening the body. It has double or triple o-rings to prevent water ingress, but still, being deep enough and for whatever reason turning it off means that you have some risk of flooding it. Manual recommends to turn it on before entering water and turning off after leaving water. D530 is much better though. The same size and slightly better performance (1300Lm vs 1000Lm). It has on/off switch with battery indicator and also has hi/low power setting. Slightly more expensive, but well worth it. I had D520 and when I lost it during a dive, I bough myself D530. I'm considering to buy another D530 for a backup.
@christosz5
@christosz5 4 жыл бұрын
@@vaidas777 Yeah, after diving it with it fo a month i can notice the big disadvantage. If i have it on my hand mount i need to take it off to turn it off. It is a bit annoying. Other than that it is really powerful, no problems with turning it on and off during dives (maybe cause it is brand new) and doesn't take a lot of space on the BCD. I will consider an upgrade in a year from now though...
