Scuba Gear for Beginners: Where to Start?

Great advice, thanks. 10 years ago I bought mask, booties, fins, wet suit and gloves, knowing that I wouldn't bother snorkelling and go diving only occasionally in warm, clear water. Pure leisure diving. I also bought a big titanium knife that was on special and is not very useful, but it looks cool strapped to the calf. I don't take the knife diving with me. :-)

Wearing any equipment available! That's a word and trying / experimenting, will give You a feeling and teach You what works and what doesnt. Really appreciate the transparent advice on centers too. No bull*** 👍👍👍

Is there a difference between PADI and SSI Schools? Where I live (Near Omaha, Nebraska) we have an SSI school.

By and large, no there is no major difference. The thing that will make the biggest difference will be the people who run the course and that you would get even from one PADI dive centre to another. If there is an SSI school locally then go with them.

How much weight should I use on my belt for snorkeling up to 15ft

It depends on your wetsuit and how buoyant you are. You could start with around 10% of your body weight. Get in the water and hold a normal breath (Not a full breath). If you float at eye level then you are about right. If you are sinking, take some weight off and if the water is at your chin then put some weight on. Trial and error til you get it right.

Pro tip. good dive centers dont make their money on retail. most of their money comes from education and SERVICING EQUIPMENT. if your dive shop isnt making a good bit of their money servicing equipment its because the people who work at or run the dive shop arent RESPECTED enough in the local dive community to garner people coming in for their expertise in servicing. A dive shop that doesnt have this function are usually mc dojo dive shops. they'll pass anyone. (Looking at you PADI) dont have decades of experience with the equipment or have made the inroads or gotten the respect from the REAL divers in the region. real dive centers and shops will have contracts with local govt. EMS and contractors dealing with infrastructure in the area. If all they have is 18 year old dive masters (the equivalent of 12 year old blackbelts at your local mcdojo) then you should get on the internets and start asking around for where the real dive shop is.

no shit for beginners! you show a damned snorkel. thats literally something you only use for the first 4 dives during the course and NEVER after that.
