Scud Race running on the WIP v0.3 (svn 270) version of Supermodel (Sega Model 3 emulator). I managed to get a 1st place on the Beginner Day course and shave 2 seconds off my previous best time. Man, this game is one spicy unforgiving bitch. The controls are so twitchy there really is no margin for error at all.

its impossible to explain to a younger kid how mind blowing this was back in 96. it was a generation ahead of anything else out there. the expensive units had a big screen and a cab that tilted when u steered. nothing could compare. it was like playing the future.

Indeed mate. I was absolutely blown away by how astonishing this game looked the first time I saw a Scud Race arcade machine, particularly the whole drive through aquarium idea of the Dolphin Tunnel. The best looking arcade racing game before this was Daytona USA, and this felt like it was a huge step up from that.

Yeah it was mind blowing, even the PC cant do that before the first Voodoo and Nvidia in 1997, it's like showing to a kids from today, an holodeck, instead of a VR technologie from 2019, the model 3 was, true military technologies from Lockeed Martin...

Something that always strikes me about Sega arcade games is that they really understand the use of colour. Whether it's Outrun, Space Harrier, Scud Race, Crazy Taxi, or Outrun 2 those bright and bold colours always just make everything look special.

This game was released in 1996, almost 19 years ago. To put things into perspective, 19 years prior to that, the Atari 2600 had just been released in stores in 1977. Just shows you the increasing diminishing returns that we've seen in the past 20 years.
@CMSonYT
@CMSonYT 9 жыл бұрын
markafc83 this is an arcade game while the 2600 was a console. additionally, the 2600 hardware wasn't particularly special compared its more expensive atari computer counterparts at the time; this contrasts to the hardware design of the NES, which was VERY specialized.
@UTUBESUCK666
@UTUBESUCK666 8 жыл бұрын
+CMSonYT What was the most advanced ***arcade*** game of 1977? Probably Circus or Sprint 8... markafc83 argument stands. The first Atari computer was the Atari 400 and 800 series, launched 2 years later in 1979 and in line with the Atari 5200 console, so OF COURSE coming 2 years AFTER, it was slightly more powerful, but not much more powerful than the 2600 anyway. That's why there are only 69 games on the 5200... So your argument is moot at best. The NES is irrelevant in this discussion as it's from 1983, 6 years after the Atari 2600. You were wrong on half the stuff you claimed, and you were irrelevant on the other half. In the end, you totally missed the point: 19 years jump to 19 years jump, from 1977, to 1996 to 2016, we can clearly see the DIMINISHING RETURNS and ****THAT**** was the point.
@MarcusTDM
@MarcusTDM 8 жыл бұрын
+Ramon Zarat Sorry but what do you actually mean by a diminishing return? Advances in graphics seem to have slowed, but that's inevitable because the best they can get to is when they look like real life and they're not far off. The difference between 76 and 96 is going from two black squares on a grey screen to complex racing games etc. From 96 to 2016 you've seen complex though not very real looking racing games etc go on to look like real life. The advancements are there and just as big, but they are less noticeable. The next 20 years will be less graphical advancements but more about they way games react to the player, like augmented reality etc.
@EOTA564
@EOTA564 8 жыл бұрын
+MarcusTDM Well you seem to have answered your own question? The changes are less noticeable as you say. We should also consider the fact that arcade games in the 90s were miles ahead of their console counterparts. There was a big gap in the 80s too but when you compare a game like Scud Race with the graphics in a PS1 or Saturn game, the difference is huge. The PS2 or original Xbox couldn't even produce graphics of this standard so it took around ten years for the technology to become sufficiently affordable for consoles to catch up.
@MarcusTDM
@MarcusTDM 8 жыл бұрын
+markafc83 yeah ok I did, not heard that term before that's all. Arcade games were way ahead at that time for sure, but I got what you were saying. The main difference in fairness between consoles and arcade at the time was resolution and frame rate.

Sega are so stupid now, they are sitting on such a great back catalogue of classic games such as this one and letting them rot, for very little time and investment they could write a few emulators and be re-selling all their old stuff on IOS and Android. instead they just put out sonic, S.O.R and couple of others...I don't get it at all Racers like NFS, Asphalt and Real racing are nice and all, but they just aren't as fun as Scud Race and Daytona. It would be really nice if we could 'legally' turn our phones and tablets into a Genesis or AM2/3 machines etc.
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 10 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I think the issue with Scud Race now unfortunately is that Sega don't have the license to use the cars in the game, which means we're unlikely to see a true conversion (although why they didn't release Scud Race on the Dreamcast back in the day, when they still did have it is a baffling mystery to me). Likewise, why they didn't release a home conversion of Daytona 2 at the same time as the recent (well, recent-ish) PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Daytona USA is equally baffling.

It'd be better to port to consoles or PC honestly. Porting to IOS/Android without retooling the game or expecting users to get controllers will just result in poor sales, and wouldn't be worth the effort. And it's not like racers or those types of games have been tearing up mobile charts either.

So I just checked your channel, and you seem to be an "expert" on these Sega racing games. I'd like to receive some insight and assistance to see if I am really going crazy here... I just tried Scud Race (Super GT here in the States) for the first time today down at an arcade, with a near perfect condition control setup. Yet, no matter what car I choose, I can't seem to get the physics down whatsoever. Daytona USA 2 was also at said arcade, which I also played for the 1st time as well, and I was able to complete the Beginner course and get 9th with the Normal car. It came so naturally for me coming from playing Daytona USA a lot. When I got home, I fired up SuperModel with my Driving Force Pro and tried both games again. Daytona USA 2 once again felt so natural to me and I got near identical results, but I fire up Scud Race and totally suck once again. No matter the car, I'd be lucky if I could get to the final lap on the Beginner course. I just can't figure the physics out! Meanwhile, Daytona USA 2 feels so natural to me, both in the arcade and the emulation with my Driving Force Pro, also having played the original Daytona USA a lot, recently on the PS3 port with my Driving Force Pro. So to conclude, am I going insane, or are the physics for Scud Race really brutally insane with such a hard learning curve? Seeing as this is an emulation, I assume you played with Force Feedback, right? Appreciate any response! Consider me a little jealous of your skill.
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 7 жыл бұрын
Elston87 Don't worry, it's not you - Scud Race has totally different physics to Daytona and is quite tricky to get your head around. The car picks up loads of speed when you drift around the corners (accelodrift). You need to break before you start your turn and then steer and accelerate. If you completely come off the gas when drifting the car will spin out, but if your angle is wrong and you accelerate too much you'll drift too wide and hit the wall. Make sure your gas and break pedals are calibrated properly to reduce any deadzone (so you don't totally come off the gas, if you're trying to ease off the accelerator a bit). I do play this with FFB now, but at the time I recorded this I was using a wheel that only rumbled.

I see. Really appreciate your response. I shall give this game another shot sometime soon. I'm just so used to Daytona USA, and this game being a descendant of it, I figured it would be relatively the same, but boy is it not! I know that my pedals definitely have full range when I went into Test Mode before playing via emulation. I still can't get over how different the physics are. A shame really; I'm no expert at Daytona USA myself, but I can play the game casually enough to enjoy it and at least come in 1st on both Beginner and Advanced courses. I wish I could do the same for this game! Maybe in due time. Thanks for your response again! Curiously as a video idea, maybe you could make tutorials on how to play Scud Race and Daytona USA? A lot of people that I know of want to get into these arcade racers, but can't figure out their physics. Maybe a proper tutorial video could ignite some more interest into these amazing games.

It's a good idea, but I'm pretty rusty at both games TBH, there are a lot of far better players out there who could probably do a better job at a tutorial than I could at the moment. I think there might already be some out there - I'm fairly certain a KZbinr called TrojanX did a mini how to play Scud Race section as part of one his Versus battlecast videos. I think there have been a few written guides as well, there was a guy called Eric (who also went by the name of phantomfullforce) who was a massive Sega Racing fan, who I'm pretty sure did some kind of guide to Daytona USA 2. Might be worth giving it a Google and seeing what comes up.

Surely the twitchy controls must be because of sensitivity. I had this problem with Daytona ARC-DC and Virtua Racing. I used the sensitivity settings on MAME/Daytona test menu and DC USA/PAL version included sensitivity setting option. Supermodel emulator also seems to have a way to configure sensitivity.
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 8 жыл бұрын
Nope, it's configured correctly. It's just the way the actual arcade game played with it's accelo-drift mechanics. Scud Race is known as one of the harder arcade racers out there.

Man, and I thought Daytona ARC was a hard game (I can get a 1st on Beginner DC, but the farthest I got on Arcade was 5th, on the emulator). Shame that my laptop can't play Scud Race/Daytona 2 without slowdown. It goes like 30-35 fps. And yeah, I noticed when the game ran like 45fps on some parts, the car was hard to drive, as when I tried on a powerful PC, the car was really hard to drive. (I was using the same car as you)

This game brings me back good old memories! I had the first place in every machine on my local arcade saloon...so many coins :) what kinda if hardware is needed to run this game? and does it support steering wheels such as the G27?

My PC is an Intel core i5-2310, with 8 Gb ram and an Nvidia GeForce GT530 -1GB. I've also got a separate dual core PC that can't quite run Supermodel full speed. You can use any type of wheel with Supermodel, including the G27, and it'll support all the force feedback effects. I've only got a cheap wheel, but even that supports vibration feedback and rumbles in all the right places when you crash or hit the walls et cetera.

I used something called FRAPS for this. It's old, you need to pay for it and it's quite hardware intensive, bit it's incredibly easy to use. I tend to use a different program now called OBS. It's free and more lightweight, but it can be a bit pernickety about what it does abs doesn't want to record.

Personally i think they should of built 2 for the advert and 1 to keep in a museum or something...

Could you explain the technique you use to power drift in those two curves you make in 3rd gear? I don't understand if you just release the gas or touch the brake, if you first turn and then shift down or the other way around and so forth.
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 4 жыл бұрын
It's been quite awhile since I last played this, so my recollection of the technique I used is a bit hazy. If I recall correctly, it was come off the gas, brake and shift down at the same time, then turn and get back on the gas. If it looks like you're drifting too wide, I think I tapped the brake to try and control the speed. If you totally come off the gas when turning it tends to make the car spin out.

Hi mate Ive started getting into the emulation side of things and have grown super fond of this game but tbh struggling with the steering wheel setup ffb settings both within supermodel and Logitech i see you are using the Logitech gt Ive got the g27 which use the same profile, mate can you shoot across some info re your setup so i can fiddle about with mine and get it right. Any help will do cheers brother, keep up the awesome content...

@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, I've never changed any of the FFB settings myself. You need to set the controls using the -config-inputs command as well. Pressing 'b' calibrates the axes, but you need to tell Supermodel which buttons to assign gears and which axes to use for gas, brake steering. launch supermodel -config-inputs -input-system=dinput either from the CMD line or a batch file, leave the black window that opens up 'In focus' and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to cycle through the different button options (displayed in the DOS window behind it). Press enter when you want change something and then just press the relevant button or move the particular axis to get it to register.

I don't get this game at all, where should I start? Is there a method to drift with automatic gears? I keep spinning out and coming in at 15th place..
@MrThunderwing
@MrThunderwing 8 жыл бұрын
+Lee Robson The drifting in Scud Race is not like any other Sega Racer. You have to brake as you approach a sharp bend then step back on the gas and turn simultaneously. As you drift through the corner you will pick up lots of speed and it's easy to end up going too wide. You can try and correct this by easing off the gas a bit, but if you come off too much you will cause the car to spin out. The only advantage of manual gears is a higher top speed, they aren't really used for drifting. Dropping from 4 th to 3rd will slow you down quickly. I found that trying to drop from 4th to 2nd will cause an Instant spin.
