This tutorial was a delight to follow, Grant. You sounded like you were really enjoying what you were doing and having a lot of fun with the sculpt. That made it a ton of fun for me to try to replicate your sculpt. Thank you for making so many tutorials available. You were recommended by the instructor in my very first Blender class, and you're still my go-to tutor.

This was a fun experience. I have next to no artistic talent at all, and I learned a lot. I first jumped into your dragon tutorial, and I got nowhere at all. I've been using Blender for about 17 years to make very simple models (I'm now in my fifties), and have learned a lot along the way, but I've been avoiding sculpting for as long as Blender has had sculpting, for the above-mentioned lack of artistic talent. My immediate failure with the dragon was quite depressing, as I need to create a child-friendly dragon for one of my projects. I resigned myself to having to learn to walk before learning to run, so I found this sculpting tutorial and made it all the way through. My head looks reasonable, given my near complete lack of artistic talent, and I've regained my motivation. I'm impressed with how much can be done with sculpting for someone like me with just a few tools.

Just want to add something for beginners who also use a graphic pad/pen: Another option for views instead of using gizmo or pressing numpad is "ALT + Hold and drag left click" to the direction. I felt very intuitive and easier to work since my finger are already on Shift or CTRL. Tks Grant, great content.

Great video, as always! Btw for anyone wanting to support the guy and struggling with organization, I can recommend the courses. I decided to give it a try because it´s really hard to get a coherent learning experience when suffering from adhd, but the way the lessons are structured, the length and the missing of any fluff have been a pretty smooth experience for me so far. Your tutorial here is an absolute *Godsend* thank you sir! I cannot tell you how many times I have torn out my hair trying to get some basic sculpting done in Blender. I don't do enough to warrant zbrush at its price. Zbrush core mini doesn't allow easy import of existing models. Thank you so much Grant Abbitt! I had a model I'm making for a game asset in Unity - and right away I see how just having my avatar facing forward along X has been screwing me up - less than 5 minutes into the tutorial and already worth its weight in gold. Thank YOU!

I think that smoothing shouldn't be used till the end. Is better to increase the policount as much as possible from the beginning to really experience digital sculpting, use a brush that builds form fast. Do not care much about weird textures at the beginning but think about building the right forms first and once that is accomplished then refine with smoothing. Don't start refining from the beginning, Do it at the end. Thanks for the tutorial, you are a fantastic teacher and beyond that, you are a fantastic person for giving away this information for free.

wow, I had no idea you could remesh over and over. I thought it was something you did after you were done. Ok, so remesh just sort of finds polygons that are too large and converts to more detail and also ones too small? and ups them so that most of them are in a tight range? well, I guess all that matters is you can keep equalizing to your target range every time. Yeah, big to small. Foundation and form first because if you go in detail first, you'll not be able to easily change your big shapes or maybe its iffy but this is very interesting and helpful to see what youre supposed to be doing. thx

Hi, I'm very new tot this kind of 3D drawing/sculpting. I've always been drawing in Rhino, mostly for jewelry applications, but this is so fascinating and allowing much more possibilities for creating free form natural 3D models. This is one of the most helpful tutorials I came across! You're explaining every step with the correct empathic attitude to understand it as a beginner. At the moment I've got one crucial question, what kind of pen-tablet would you advice to start sculpting in Blender? Any brand/model you could advice? Anyway, thank you very much for this great tutorial, making it look 'easy'. Can't wait to try this out and build up some experience.

I'm an old-school, low-poly modeler. While I am always eager to learn, I _am_ learning slightly begrudgingly (I'm just stubborn). To me, topology is still the groundwork of a good model, _not_ something you just throw at a junior or intern while saying, "Here, retopolgize this." But again, I'm just stubborn. And this is the way the wind is blowing.

It's incredible and not difficult when your every step is followed, for three months I worked in a fusion model of a fish and a mold for that fish, for three months I studied every day, every day at least two hours studying in that program, I knew ten hours at a time, a month today I was fixing the mold and the fish, I wanted to put small details and scales on that fish and I realized that I will have to learn to work in the blender, yesterday I turned on the blender for the first time, I watched a couple of tutorials and now I came across yours and I needed everything an hour to make a sculpture of a head similar to yours, I closed a window by mistake and then I closed the blender and didn't save the sculpture, I made a similar one again in 15 minutes but one thing doesn't work, I can't get a mirror on the eye, when I click on the eye I go to add mode, mirror and it says failed to set value, at the top right of the window when I mark the head it turns green and when I put it on the eye then it turns red, I can mirror the head in the mirror but not the eye, this is the first tutorial I've seen of yours and I will continue to watch them Is it easy to follow you, thank you

Great tutorial! After a couple of hours of banging my head against the wall, I now know why Blender's sculpting defaults to one viewport window: because Blender doesn't update additional viewports in Sculpting mode. I thought it was some kind of bug because all the viewports are updated when moving points in edit mode. It's probably for performance reasons. Shame because I like to be able to see an additional side or front view while I'm sculpting.
