When I decided I was going to learn CGI at 35, I set down and came up with an original character, and I began to start sculpting. I watched what I needed to get to the next step. Now that I've got all the characters developed, I have learned zbrush fairly well. Better than fairly really. And now I'm learning rigging and animation to finish my scene. When my scene is finished, all know enough to freelance. But I work everyday on this for 10 hours atleast. So I will be a pro one day.

My journey has been quite the opposite. I learned to model Characters and environments in Maya, as well as Texturing, Rigging, Animation, Cinematic Lighting, Rendering and Post Production. Only now I am starting to learn Zbrush along with correct anatomy sculpting.

Hey man, I'm now seeing this at 37 yrs old. I turned 37 in Ocyober this year. Started my zbrush journey about 6 months ago. Curious to hear how your journey is going. I'm doing the same thing, granted I only work between 2 and 4 hours a day on workdays. Longer on my days off.

the first pro vs amateur point - that is my weakness right there... I continually get into looking into it and looking into it to "get prepared" but then I just fall off and don't want to do anything. I notice this happening in other parts of my life and having to overcome there, so I love that you said this, because I should bring that "professionalism" from my job into my hobby :)

i enjoyed this lecture a lot and found it very interesting! I have never learned anatomy though. But the way the names are described are in a way I can engage and understand what they are for was great. It got me interested in a subject I find beyond boring normally. But here I can see the way the anatomy applies artistically. He's obviously a talented teacher cause anatomy is I imagine one of the harder things to teach well.

10 minutes in, this is possibly my favourite video on the entire Internet. Dude has provided some simple but incredible tools for learning about who I am and how to grow, AND made me laugh with pictures of muscles and boobs. Keep in mind, I'm a person with absolutely zero interest in personally creating visual art by any method; Interest in watching its creation is barely higher. It's only due to a rabbit hole that began with true crime and led through forensic artistry that I had the good fortune to click on this video. Be well. ✌️🍍

What if I am sculpting a female figure, is it necessary to put in all those details, female usually not that muscular And what are the most important features on human face besides those most obvious ones like nose and eyes And what are the features people usually forget to put it there

This is NOT a sculpting tutorial! It is one of the most profoundly insightful and inspiring master classes on this side of the domain name. Thank you, ImageMetrics, for sharing this.

Naming things is important: "Language is our cognitive machinery; it shapes our ability to interpret, recall and process concepts. Lera Boroditsky, writing in Edge a few years ago, describes an Australian Aboriginal community whose language references direction in absolute terms, rather than the relative ones Indo-European languages use. Instead of telling someone to “watch out for the ditch ahead,” for example, someone from the tribe might warn a fellow member to “watch out for the ditch southeast.” Boroditsky writes that “the result is a profound difference in navigational ability and spatial knowledge” between the tribesmen and their spatially-relativist Indo-European speaking brethren." The opposite or negative effect of NOT having a word for something can also be illustrated from the real world: " Studies performed in 1953 on the ability of the indigenous Zuni tribes of New Mexico and Arizona found them to have difficulty retaining and recalling the colors yellow, orange and combinations thereof compared to Anglo-Saxons performing the same tests. As it happens, the Zuni have no separate words for the colors yellow and orange and therefore insufficient linguistic precision to process the difference. It is often said that sloppy language leads to sloppy thought. These studies and others like them conclude the same from the other direction: linguistic precision leads to cognitive precision. If distinct concepts are poorly defined they will be poorly understood."

The naming conventions don't really matter in digital sculpting unless you're teaching people anatomy. What's really important is to understand the mechanics of the human body and practice sculpting. Practice is key!

Ryan clearly knows what he's talking about... The shame is just that he does so very very much talking without really saying anything. Granted, I am not sure what the target demographic for this webinar was; I get the feeling it wasn't for people who have been doing art for a long time and he felt it necessary to repeat things in different ways multiple times throughout the video. That was just in the roughly 15-20 minutes of it that I didn't skip straight over.

Have you ever been in a really good art class? He talks like the professors do. You're supposed to sculpt along with him and just focus on what you're doing while letting the cool, inspiring facts guide you in the right direction. I think what Ryan is doing is fantastic and is unique to the online world. There are plenty of lecturers out there on the web that will tell you exactly what to do, but Ryan is the only one that reminds me of my great professors and teaches you to explore. There's use for both, but I prefer the latter.

The Pink Floyd quote got to me, no one ever gets that reference, makes me sad. Anyhow, as someone who's been trying to sculpt faces for a while this is a pretty amazing video for someone trying to learn how. Not really an artist myself though, more of a designer/programmer, but I've had to lend a hand towards art creation since my indie game has only one other person working on it.

@Marner0501: Sorry, THAT was a bad day-- nothing that a medical course in anatomy wouldn't cure. My admitted bias: I trained at medical school (most animators NEVER need to even approach that level). Just pronunciations (a pet peeve) and a few inaccuracies, of which *every "anatomy for artists" work contains. But there is some real meat here, esp with/for ZBrush, which this author knows absolutely intimately-- he worked FOR Pixelogic for years. Keep watching-=> I look forward to more, too.

Anatomy is our minds way of placing ourselves in the conscious universe. How we look depends on how we see ourselves subconsciously. We cannot change our subconscious look because it is unreachable, but it is there. Think of it as Psychological DNA. The universe looks the way it does because of our 5 senses and how we use them. Without the 5 senses there is no way of letting our mind know the universe actually exists. Anatomy describes the vessel of the mind. At least that is how I see it

The golden ratio is based on the Bibonacci sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21..........ad infinitum .We just sum the two former numbers to make the next on the sequence. If you divide the last two, say 21/13 you get 1.6153.... That is the golden ratio. It has been found in nature, and is aesthetic pleasing.

Would not recommend this as a "tutorial". The only thing I learned from this by watching 40 mins is that you need to know anatomy. That you need to learn what the Zygomatic bone is, where it connects to the Infraorbital Margin, etc. He won't tell you WHERE it is in the video, just that you should know it and to know its name (or give it a pseudo name). He starts sculpting at 33 Min mark, but goes on 10 more minutes to again explain the importance of knowing anatomy, of having a visual library for anatomy. By the 42 Min mark, you might actually learn something if you don't know anatomy, but he's just glossing over most of it and giving names of doctors who found or named the muscle. He's a good sculptor, and you might pick up a few things or two from this video, but I wouldn't say you'll learn a lot of things from the video, especially since it's an hour long.

The first thing that pops into my head when you say "anatomy" is "the human form." But then I am not exactly typical (and I learned a bit of latin when I was younger, which tended to give me a deeper understanding of Western language than most my age). And... It is Paul EKman, not "Aikman". The distinction is slight. Ekman is a psychologist and Behavioralist, and not an Author, and he is probably more "pop-science" than "real science."
