Although I've been sculpting in Zbrush for over 10 years and have learned from Scott Eaton, Zack Petroc, Kris Costa, and others, this is pure gold. Thank you for doing this. Even after years of anatomical studies and 100s of head sculpts I am never finished learning. I love to see expert traditional sculptors working in Zbrush.

I don't think I ever learnt this much watching a video tutorial . I've always loved a more rough and dynamic look in all art forms and have been struggling with finding a more enjoyable and "sketchy" approach in Zbrush while maintaining accuracy. I have to say I also really love your brushes, the toolmarks they leave are just perfect. The lowererd imbed depth on the Ballstylus and the brush Alpha on the Claytrim are genius. I'll be using this approach whenever I can from now on (I'm a character artist at a game studio). I sculpted along while watching the turorial and I have to say the pace is perfect to sculpt along with. On to the next episode!

Hey Robin, thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you appreciate the approach we learn here: it's from the inside out and it's constructive. Once we learn to feel and quickly gauge the beauty of the structure then details are easy. I work in the film industry where we need to achieve high levels of photorealism but I can tell you that 90% of my career comes from learning and training these principles, the other 10% is tools and technique :)

Hi Robin, could you pls help with whats the imbed value for ballstylus brush and alpha for the clay trim. I managed to get the rk brushes which are free but couldn't achieve the feel of the brush strokes like in the video. Clay trim is what i am unable to get to work. I found few alphas from zbrush central community where this clay trim originated but i dont think i managed to work. Anyways any help with brushes or brush settings will give a nice sleep till we get the first set which are in the making i believe

Most of Zbrush videos I saw (and I have seen a LOT) are quite productivistics; how to quickly reach likeness, cohesion with a given style, shortcuts and tips to match professionnals needs... Very useful but often empty of vision and conection. Your video is awesome. We are in a total different mental posture here, outlining humanity behind gesture, reclaiming form as intention. Thousand thanks!

These have become some of my favourite videos on sculpting in ZBrush. It’s forcing me to loosen up, and in some ways forget the anatomy and just play and see what happens. Which is lovely. Set myself the challenge of sculpting just noses for 30 days. Then mouths… but each day I’ll spend 30 minutes roughing out a head. See where I get.

I really, *really* like this video. There are a lot of amazing talents in ZBrush here on KZbin, and many of them have been sculpting for years, and have developed their ways over those years when ZBrush was quite different. They often don't use Sculptris Pro. I bought Zbrush in version 2018, and Sculptris Pro was a large part of what made me jump on it. I just "grok" this more traditional method of sculpting more than any of the other ways I have seen. Maybe this is because the first of my sculpting experiences, long ago, were in Sculptris, or because of memories of playing with clay in the real world. Thank you so much for these tutorials. I am definitely subscribing!

Great Video! Enjoying it. Mainly because of the workflow, which I myself also like very much. There seem to be two categories of sculpting workflows. On the one end, there are people that sculpt with very low poly geo and extensive use of the move brush. They only gradually and sparsely add polys as they need them. On the other hand, some sculptors go in and carve, slash and trim their big to medium forms right into a sphere and layer back and forth very dynamically. I sometimes ask myself, if the former has a tendency to produce more stiff, less organic and less gestural, but very precise and clean work, and the latter, produces very dynamic, organic and geastural, more lively work with the sacrifice of some cleanness and precision. And then of course, there is a lot of inbetween of using a mixture of both. Non of the workflows are superior or more valid than the other, nor should one stick and limit oneself to either ends only. But I'd be interested in your view on this. Do you also think that working like this tend to produce more lively work? Or do you think it really doesnt matter, and the result can be as lively, when using a more geometry based, resticted polys workflow. Would one basically prevent spontaniety, geasture and happy accidents when sticking to a low poly cage? Would one sacrifice clarity and solidity when working with a high poly and sculptris from the start on? My suspicion is, that if you are very well aware of the basic underlying structures and shapes, that the "start low only" workflow might be something that could be skipped by a more experienced sculpturer as an underlying drawing could be skipped by an experienced painter. As if in the the end, none of this matters, if you have a solid gasp of what you are doing and get the fundamentals. But I also still have the suspicion, that it might be true, that working like this, as you do here, like with wet digital clay, leads to more natural and lively results, full of energy. Whereas using more of the other end, can potentially lead to more ""over"" elaborated, stiffly modeled looks.

I'm glad someone brought this up. I have seen so many videos that *stress* this low poly method of sculpting and I just *can't get it.* It doesn't work for me. Using Sculptris Pro and working in a more traditional sense just feels more natural and relatable. I am glad this video shows that.

I can tell by your intonation, way of explaining and just relaxed state that you really have passion for this. I`m fairly new in 3D sculpting and my goal(dream) is next year to enter digital art( 3D modeling) school so one day making creatures and all sorts of things in Zbrush, be my daily job :) !! I was told that Anatomy is the the base and it is a MUST know. I struggle a lot and easily get frustrated hence why i quit, and then start again so many times. But you sir, i really hope you continue the series and wont stop only with Male/Female figures. Looking forward to the next one, and as for now i`m sculpting along with the video :) !! Best of luck: Tony.

Tony, fellow artists like yourself are the reasons I started this. Ten years ago, I was exactly where you are and I can tell you: great things will happen if you put the hard work in. This series will show you that there's no perfect mark, no perfect stroke, that we are imperfect as artists but we strive to do the work, to learn and to show up everyday. You will see me making many mistakes but you'll also see me going back, do the work again and again until we get it right. What is right? It's not perfection, it's not knowing every single fiber in the human body but it's about expressing your voice through the sculpture while doing it in a way that is true, that resonates with people and inspires them. Don't think "anatomy", get intimate with the beauty of the human figure. It's the living language of sculpture. Anatomy is a tool we will learn to speak this language. This is not taught openly outside of old style, traditional ateliers and my mission is to bring this language back into the 3d world while helping fellow sculptors to keep the spark alive. Stick close and promise yourself "next time I'm gonna attempt to quit, it just means I need to push harder"! Keep sculpting Rudy

@@digitalClay Yeah. :D My sculpting professor used to do wonders with a plain old plank he'd pick up from the floor. I'd be sculpting a head from clay for like four+ hours, he'd come to me carrying the dreaded 2x4, would destroy the masterpiece of a nose I'd spent an hour making and remake it with plank of wood in like a minute. And because he'd use the largest and flattest plank he would find - it would have perfectly defined planes and tendencies and I would end up tearing my hair in frustration. I guess that's why I'm bald now. Joking aside - it's kind of a pity seeing all those hyper detailed mushy zBrush models out there, that do not have the nice sculptural heaviness and construction to them.

It's a standard material with a bit of tweak in the specularity and diffuse. I plan to release a bonus episode with the scene setup! As for the dynamic brush it's usually off, what you see ON is the sculptris mode. Keep sculpting!! Rudy

I've been sculpting for quite a while but there's one thing that worries me more than the rest. It's about eyes, I can't seem to get a definitive answer on whether all humans: male, female, kids, adults, etc. have the same size of eyeballs (approx. 24mm) and even the smallest deviation leads to sight problems or does it vary between 21-27? Different sources say different things. If it doesn't vary it'd be a hell of a lot easier to make sure that my sculpts are correct scale-wise, particularly when I'm sculpting a well known person, thanks to anyone who can chime in.
@digitalClay
@digitalClay 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, you nailed it. The eye proportions are very crucial and we will cover them more in the next episode where we refine and check again the proportions. For now just try to make sure that you measure 5 eyes horizontally when looking from the front. And try to stay within the bottom of the eye socket line we drew at the beginning.

What brush do you use for sculpting? RK_Balls? Is this your own brush? It’s very interesting to know about the settings of a personal brush in order to emit sculpting with your finger, while keeping the smear effect on clay.
@digitalClay
@digitalClay 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sasha - I wish there was a final brush which emulates clay perfectly but for now the effects you see comes from a few basic alphas, years of practicing and cultivating one's own sense of taste relentlessly - RK is not mine but it's Ryan Kingslien's. It's a very clean brush. By itself it will not give you any smear effect. I'm designing a few other brushes which feels a bit more like clay and when they are ready I'll share an update with the tribe!

Yes, this is the whole reason behind DigitalClay. The process we use trains your hand, your eye and your artistic sensitivity. Think of Zbrush as a simple tool, a new scalpel in your toolbox. The dynamics are slightly different, but with a good tablet device you are still learning to "feel" the clay. Keep sculpting!
