I know this comment is old, but don't make it too wet because it will make the clay more likely to crack. Assuming you're using aor dry clay.

Sometimes it can crack when it’s drying. And from my personal experience if depending on how thick the clay is you can put a wet paper towel over it (after it’s wrung out) for a couple days
@tonyapplebottom79134 жыл бұрын
You can touch up the cracks with more clay and it's really easy to blend out
@SofiaBue2 жыл бұрын
Both NeonEli and Tony are right :) You can slow down the drying process (preventing cracks) by draping a damp paper towel, or simply a loose piece of plastic overtop whilst leaving it to dry. The plastic sheet will keep some of the condensation in, making it dry slower and more 'stable'. Should small crack start to form they can be repaired with fresh clay. The sooner you notice any cracks the easier it is to fix them (before the sculpture is fully dry).

In my art class we used news paper and glue to cover up the cracks

Well I actually thought it was extremely educational, just by watching her application of materials, method of tooling ect. I guess that would require watching carefully instead of looking for things to gripe about though... wouldn't it?
@claudiavargas20404 жыл бұрын
@@whiskeyrichards9973 not everyone learns the way you do just through watching. Some people learn through direct explanations. Maybe if you took the time to consider how others learn instead of assuming everyone learns the way you do you'd know that.
@whiskeyrichards99734 жыл бұрын
@@claudiavargas2040 Actually, the point I was attempting to make was that sometimes it's better to make good use of what is available than to gripe and moan about what isn't. In other words, make the best with what you've got.

@@whiskeyrichards9973 They shouldn't have to settle if the video said it was going to do one thing and then didn't deliver. And with the comment you originally left them you aren't in a place to be talking about " griping and moaning ".

Thanks for your comment and question :) My new go-to Air Dry Clay is DAS. It's a little different as it has paper fibers in it. I made a tutorial with it recently: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4jchWidl9WDn9k La Doll is another great brand of Air Dry Clay - quite possibly the best! It is, however, also a bit more expensive and not widely available. Hope that helps. Good Luck :)

What if you're in 7th grade and you don't have the tools to do this sculpture. What do you do then?
@SofiaBue3 жыл бұрын
Many of my favorite sculpting tools are actually home made! I'm planning on making a video about this in the future. In the meantime here are a few objects you could try: 1) the thin end of a teaspoon, 2) chop sticks (potentially carved to a better shape, with a hobby knife), 3) popsicle sticks.
@BunnyHop1263 жыл бұрын
OH TINFOIL!!! never thought of using that, recently got some clay and had a hard time making anything look how I wanted it just flopped or didn’t shape right 😂 I mean you didn’t use tinfoil but can I use it?
@depresso81633 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! An armature is essential to most sculpturs, making them secure/stable. Also, if you make an armature (tinfoil/aluminium wires) it uses way less clay.
@SofiaBue2 жыл бұрын
@Depresso is right - an armature is almost essential and makes sculpting so much easier :) Tinfoil works great. I use a combination of Aluminium wire, Aluminium mesh, and tinfoil.

Hi :) As this project was made in air dry clay is was not intended to be molded. If I was sculpting in plasticine with the intention of replicating my sculpture, then yes it would be important to avoid sulfur based clay.
