I believe yes, as long as it's in black and white (for alpha purposes)

Why is better use this and not a normal map??

A Normal map is a fake effect in computer graphics. It doesn't deform the geometry in real. We can deform the geometry and give details using sculpting. Then we can bake the normal map from the high poly mesh to low poly mesh.
