We're not professional drivers by any means - but we do like to send it. Which means that proper safety equipment is absolutely crucial in our Scumbug build - especially if we plan to eventually race Baja in this thing someday! I dont think they'll race it, just pre run it. bad daddy was saying they were building it to 5/1600 class but they exceeded the engine displacement regulation. and im not too familiar with all the class requirements so im not sure if they qualify for class 5.

I can't believe that you are going to make that poor little VW motor try to push those tall tires. On my VW Baja, I'm running a 1641 cc with rear tires that are 28.5 tall. Any taller and I think that you will lose usable torque to get them moving, unless you have reduced your gear ratios in the new transaxle. I'm also surprised that you went with BFG's mud tires. They look nice and super aggressive, but it seems that the KO2's would have been better suited to what you will find in the desert. The SCUMBUG build is looking really great! I'm looking forward to any updates on the project!
