I'm a Torquay United fan. We were just relegated from the National League like Scunthorpe, and are currently in the lowest league weve ever been in (the only other time weve been in the NL South was 5 years ago). Despite how miserable this recent decline has been for me, it's nothing compared to the existential threat that Scunthorpe face. I really hope they somehow survive this, it's a disgrace what's happened

Scunthorpe was the first non-PL team I ever managed in Football Manager when I first started playing in 2005. I picked them because they had the least-glamorous name that would look funny up against Real Madrid in the CL. Billy Sharp and Andy Keogh scored 35 goals between them in my first season. Good times! Still have a soft spot for the club, they remind me of my first year of uni, a more carefree time.

@@richardg8376Scunthorpe United, in 1957/8, knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup, and at St James's Park. Four years later, they sold Barry Thomas to Newcastle, and he played a part in restoring First Division football for the Magpies. Scunthorpe finished fourth in Division 2 that season. Was the sale the start of the decline? Two years later, Scunthorpe were relegated, and I think they have had one season only in that division. I gather that Scunthorpe moved to their present ground only in 1988. Was the Old Show Ground sub-standard? One cannot have a new stadium built, unless one has several millions these days. At least there are no other big clubs in the area. I bet that most football supporters in Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, and the like, prefer to watch and follow one or other of the Manchester clubs. There are even people following Manchester United, in particular, who have never even been to Manchester!

You have done a great job in researching the situation and keeping on top of the developments since my first correspondence. It's honestly touching to see this video now. As it is with the many fans who have raised awareness and supported us over the last week or so. As Callum has mentioned, there is some hope. There is a party trying to sort things out, and I believe Swann might be more willing to work with the new party in coming to a solution over the stadium than he was with Hilton. However, that seems to be fraught. This evening we have had a journalist say the deal is off, to it being back on again one hour later. My local club Dundee United has had it's ups and downs. Got relegated to the Scottish Championship for a while, then promoted again in 21-22 season. Finished in the top 4 and got into the Conference League and achieved a home win against AZ Alkmaar. Then they lost 7-1 away and crashed and burned straight down to 12th place. Losing 9-0 to Celtic was the cherry on top, absolute massacre. Had chances to reach safety and bottled it. Yet none of this compares to the pain and suffering fans of clubs like Scunthorpe, Southend, Luton, Wrexham, Nottingham, Wimbledon, Bath, and Blackpool have felt. Decades even of bad ownership and poor management leading to relegation limbo and now death. Don't know if I could stomach it. To many in these small industrial towns, football is all we've got. When a club dies part ourselves dies too. Genuine shame, feel sorry for Scunthorpe.

I've know a number of kids that were part of the Academy set-up at Scunthorpe, one of my sons included. Obviously no Academy set-up as of the end of last season, so best part of 200 kids just dropped and the staff they had with the door effectivley shut in their face and lied to. The writing was on the wall half way through the season to be fair. Coaching staff leving and not being replaced. Certain parts of the 'Academy life' just not done. Then the interview from the 'owner' that was released in March/April time that the Academy was going to shut. That was the first that any of the staff had heard about it, so came as a massive shock to them. Long story short, as many other things went on between then and the end of the season. Academy gone. Loads of kids struggling to find a team to play for and the age group that my son played for, we still haven't had anything official from the club that it's all over. He's managed to get back playing with his old grassroots club as he wanted to play with his mates from school, but he's better than that. I just want him to be happy playing and he is. The news this week that the club has been saved is great, but there are lots of ex Academy players and parents that have a bitter taste in their mouth about how they have ben treated over the past year. Rant over.

I'm a Stockport County fan and whilst things are going well for us now with great ownership and stuff being put in place to make us self-sustaining to (hopefully) prevent ourselves ever being in this situation but not long ago, only about 13/14 years ago it could have so easily have been us in this situation, if not for the efforts of the fans and various individuals we could have so easily gone to the wall at risk of losing our ground and our club so I take absolutely no joy in seeing situations like this for historic Football League clubs like Scunny, Bury, Oldham, Chester, Darlington etc. and I can't understand the mindset of fans who will do, I don't care how much you may loathe another club, wanting them to simply not exist is madness to me just for the 'crime' of being from a town close by to the town you support. I wish absolutely nothing but the best for Scunthorpe United and their fans, a club like that should never be in this situation. The FA, The EFL and the National League aren't fit for purpose, they claim there is a fit and proper test but there is zero evidence of this from the very top with the likes of Newcastle, to the lower reaches with Scunthorpe etc.

In Turkey we used to perform in the Süper Lig our top division in Turkey for 16 years and we were a good mid-table side and even used to play Europa League in the 70's with the legendary Miracle of the Andalus where we defeated Sevilla FC 3-2 on aggregate in the 1970-71 season. Eskişehir used to be a really good team with great talent and some really quality youth systems in Turkey and after we were relegated in 2016, we started going downhill fast and fell down the tiers faster than the Lira's value. First League (Turkey's EFL Championship), Second League (Turkey's EFL League One), Third League (Turkey's EFL League Two) and at last down to Regional Amateur League (Turkey's version of the Vanarama Conference North and South). It's an irony really when you think about the wider picture, don't get me wrong the Super League is and was a dreadful idea. But because it threatened to wreck the Premier League, and angered the gargantuan fanbases of the big 6, action was taken to the extent that the then Prime Minister in Boris Johnson threatened to drop a "legislative bomb" to ensure it didn't happen and could never happen. Football united then for the love of the game over corporate greed. Yet when it's the likes of Scunthorpe, Southend, Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, Rochdale, and Wigan going through the mire, all of whom should be considered major footballing institutions in the same way that any of the big 6 are I might add, the best case scenario reaction from the football industry is the can being kicked down the road, as it's a problem that doesn't have the kind of reach that the Super League does, because it's not at the top end of football. I wish Scunthorpe and any club on hard times all the best, as I know it could just so easily be my beloved club in Peterborough United who could've at the whim of fate be in their position.

Not too long ago, Scunthorpe United was considered as one of the top 3 best run football clubs in England, after a club wide financial survey was run. At the time, the club had a League 1 / Championship team (up/down "yoyo" team). The club's owner became ill and decided to sell and it was bought by Swann, who you show in the video. Swann spent money on funding the club for a while, but unknown to fans transferred the ownership of the club-owned surrounding land and stadium to one of his own companies. It was later recognised what he had done. That was the worst thing that could have happened and was seen by many as asset stripping the club. It was then that everything went downhill. Swann is responsible for the demise of the club and Hilton came in and ultimately finished them off. They are not dead yet though and there is a faint heart beat and it is that that the supporters are hanging onto. A great football club, who have been virtually destroyed by the last 2 owners. Hopefully, they will not ultimately die and can be kept on life support and then recover their health. The club is important to the town and its community and to the thousands of supporters of the club both in England and indeed overseas. If it all fails, then I hope a new football club can be formed in Scunthorpe and become a phoenix and rise from the ashes of the former club. Sad state of affairs at Scunthorpe United FC. They are not the first and will not be the last club who will witness these type of dealings and that is something that needs addressing at authority levels.

I've heard this story so often - the owner uses the club's ground as collateral, his dodgy financing plan goes tits up, and the ground is now worth more as a rugby ground (Darlington), or a general sports facility, or as development land for housing. End of club. The ex-con with four names clearly thought he was getting ownership of the stadium for his £ 5 (set against £ 1,2 Mill. tax debr, not unreasonable), and when the former owner explained the purchase contract, that was that. There should be a law that football clubs' grounds can be sold (a once-only finance boost), BUT only to the local council, and only if the local council (an elected body after all) is required to use "all known means" to keep the ground as a sports facility. That way, the club would at least never become homeless, even if the players were playing for charity only. The sport could go on.

I might be speaking for other people when I say that I'd love to consume more of the same kind of conetent as you have produced on this video

As a Leyton Orient fan I sympathise with Scunthorpe. We had an owner who took us from Championship contenders to the National League. We were lucky to be taken over by someone who supported the Os as a boy. Scunthorpe have given us two legendary England captains in Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence as well as a cricket legend and England captain Sir Ian "Beefy" Botham playing in their colours. It will be a travesty if they end up like Bury. They have a history, don't let that go

The fact that Scunthorpe has a population of over 81,000(2021) and can't raise 2,000,000 is mind boggling. If each adult can donate 50 pounds they can possibly save their club. The FA as well as the UK government needs to step in and stop these small towns from losing their clubs. 🤦🏾♂️
@apatten7604 Жыл бұрын
I don't want to "defend" my rival town but the place is an absolute cesspit shithole. I'm talking 3rd world quality of living, abject poverty. I'd be awfully surprised if more than 10% of their populace could afford a spare £50 to donate to the club.

By the sounds of it someone is gonna be buying Southend which is great news for their fans. But for Scunthorpe not so good hope they get out of trouble. My local team Ebbsfleet United nearly went bust but thankfully we were saved by our current owner

Coventry fan here. It's all too familiar. We have seemingly got through the worst of our ordeal, but others like Scunthorpe haven't been so fortunate. I remember playing Scunthorpe many times. Former player Gary McSheffrey played & managed Scunthorpe. They have a rich history. This shouldn't be happening. I just hope someone can come in with enough money to keep them going, even if it means making a deal with this crook to keep playing at the stadium.

As a grimsby fan of over 55 years it always got my back up to see scunny doing better than town to see them drop from the football league and town go the other way was a blessing as im sure itvwas reciprocated when town went the same way but for the fans this is bad news and not the fault of the players i hope you can get some closure and somehow get back on track 🤞

There has been too many clubs that have suffered similar fate, Bury, Southend and Scunthorpe with many others coming close. There needs to be a major shake up at the top of the game with the FA doing more to protect these clubs from men like Hilton. This not only loses people their club they have gone to watch for years, but also affects the livelihoods of others. People that work for the club, the food places around the ground, the local pubs etc. All will be hit by the actions of one man.

As a Luton fan of many years, we've had our ups and downs. Where we are now has come about after a rise from our non league days. A fan led buy out and a strong support were pivotal. At Wembley in 2009 I met a lot of Scunthorpe fans that wished us well as we were about to drop out of the leagues. Wishing Scunthorpe all the very best now. I hope things do turn round for you

I feel for Scunthorpe, I really do. More than just the club, it's the local community. People (and by which, I mean investors) seem to forget that the purpose of football clubs was originally community clubs. Their traditions run deep. For me, the problem is the globalization of the sport and the elevation of the Premier League above all else. Where I live, kids growing up are within a relatively short distance of several clubs: Preston, Blackburn, Bolton, Blackpool, Wigan. But the shirts you see are Manchester's United and City, Liverpool, and Everton - clubs that aren't a million miles away to be fair, but all further than the smaller ones. These Premier League teams swallow up younger fans, who then never grow up to appreciate their local clubs, or even their grassroots teams ( Euxton Villa for ever!)

Scunthorpe are trying to not get liquidated they need to pay players and staff on time it's similar to what's happening to reading and Southend. If scunthorpe die there club gets liquidated And play in the 10th division with phoenix clubs like Macclesfield FC, Bury FC they would be called something like scunthorpe united FC.

So sorry to hear of the plight of Scunthorpe United. This is the club that launched the career of Kevin Keegan and also had Ian Botham on their books as a player. I visited a couple of times as an away supporter (losing on both occasions) and always saw it as a well run club.

And scunny had ray clemance as well, every kid growing up there in the 80’s knew the bit of trivia about them having 3 players who captained England. I went back to visit the town at the start of December 2022, the whole town is on its knees, very sad

This is why I will stop watching football if we in Germany drop 50+1 one day. It’s not like we don’t have stories of collapsing clubs but the feeling of helplessly seeing the club you would give pretty much everything for go down under the watch of owners who do not care for the club the same way you but they are the only ones who have something to say and could do something must be devastating. Fans who support a club the same way in the 6th division as they did in the 2nd deserve better, hopefully a miracle can be achieved for Scunthorpe but it does sound really bad
@kunik614 ай бұрын
Not as bad as torquay, Scunthorpe did almost promote back to 5th division (lost in playoffs). In my FM 21 save, Scunthorpe had promoted to EPL in season 2038/2039, to play their only EPL season. Only to lose every single game. Now they are surfing across EFL, rarely relegating to ENL.
