I have a very simple explanation to why the boss fight ends after throwing that sky gem: *(Bear with me, folks. This is a complicated one.)* The when you grab on to a boss, you are physically attached to that boss. Wherever it goes, you go. This is how you get to ram bosses into obstacles (even when it's a bit hard to control). By throwing a sky gem, the game tries to force Sonic to wherever the gem has landed. But because you're physically attached to the boss, it drags you to where the gem landed. But now, the boss keeps going in that direction through any and every obstacle because it's not a character; it's an entity that will phase through everything just in case something goes wrong. Because it's not touching a surface upon landing where the gem is; it keeps going. But the stage ends at some point. And because of how fast the gem will usually drag the player, after about 30-40 seconds, the game "ends", and it deletes anything that has touched this point. This is why, for example, a crate respawns after being dropped into the ocean; it touches that point after a bit. However, a boss is NOT meant to respawn, therefore effectively defeating the boss. Usually when you defeat a boss, it gets deleted when you get the final hit on him, and it switches from an interactive entity to a standard entity, and plays a death animation while in standard form. Deleting a boss instantly gets rid of a lifebar, unless deleted in this way, where you are not one hit away from defeating him. It kinda just gets rid of the boss altogether. Hope this helps for anyone curious s to why this occurs.

The xbla demo version actually has a gem meter (the little line under that bigger line at the bottom right on the hud) but since they lost progress in a system crash/error, they had to switc back to an older build and work up from there, and frankly, it's probable that there were other things more important to fix till the rushed release day.

One time I was playing Sonic Heroes my game for some reason started to glitch out (this was back when I had my GameCube, I should also mention that I never used cheats or attempted to glitch out the game before). I got to the fight against Team Chaotix after the jungle level during Team Rose's storyline, and before I could start the fight the floor below Team Chaotix started glitching out. I instinctively switched to Cream and jumped, while the other team tried to jump but soon fell into the water. And that's how my save file has me completing that fight in 4 seconds. I was never able to replicate it, nor did I ever understand why that happened to begin with. But it was hilarious.

I think I know what happened with the "boss-killing gem" glitch: The boss charges at you, an you grab its horn, which lets you control it to make it crash into something, right? But, becouse of the gem, Sonic teleports away from the boss after it went on player-controlled mode. Since there's no player control it becouse Sonic regained its "normal" control, the boss just keeps going... and going... and going... and, at some point, it goes so out of boundaries that the game either ignores it or erases it, and gives you the victory becouse "the boss is gone" ... Dunno... just guessing =P

While we're on the subject of Knuckles' section, i might at least add another glitch. It happens in his section. I don't know many details, but i'll try to explain how it happened. While playing in his section, there is a platform you can glide to, but if you land in a specific space there, you'll bounce off a bounce that *isn't there*, launching you into the roof, making you stuck temporarily on a wall. You can watch it in the Game Grumps Sanic 06 LP, part 20, at the 7:39 mark.

The reason why boss battle ends is because Boss despawns if it's too far away from arena, and battle is designed to ends, when there's no boss on stage. I think you can also do this with Egg Cerberus.

I think I know why the boss dies immediately after 30 seconds when you use the sky gem. I think it is because once sonic lands back on the platform, the boss is still flying in the same direction, and it will continue to fly in the same direction until it hits the death barrier, and that is what kills the boss.

Also, I think that at 3:16 , the boss actually goes so far in a single direction that it despawns, and since the game is poorly made, it registers that the boss is "defeated" and ends the fight.
