SD33T with Garrett GT2860RS exhaust note

Just did the head gasket on my patrol due to a a dodgy mechanic - Didn't clean the block or head, used holymar sealant and didn't torque head correctly. All of this plus an aftermarket headgasket when a genuine one was requested.
I run high boost so a non genuine head gasket will blow pretty quick. The poor preparation just made it happen quicker.
This video was taken just after I did the head gasket. I have dropped some fuel out of it and limit the boost to 10psi until I have done 1000k's and re-torqued the head bolts.
I am using about 1/3 throttle in the video and shifting at about 2200rpm. Boost does not exceed 10psi.

I was beginning to think this mighta been my old MK for a minute there, til i saw the other vids with the brown interior. I had a bluey/grey one, lived in Ballaz, then i sold it on, and just as i moved out of Ballaz i saw it again, at the end of my street, so i knew it had come back to the area. Wish i'd have put a 3" exhaust on it tho, did't manage to get on to that til i had my GQ with a turbo tho. Nice vid, awesome sound. Makes me miss mine!

@S12PSI I bought this one about 4.5 years ago from a dealer in Wangara. Picked it up for 4k....Spent about 5 x on it since then....Stupid hey haha. This video was only being gentle to the new head gasket...Just got a GoPro Motorsport HERO so I am going to shoot some new videos today. Perhaps an under bonnet video...one near the intake, and one near the exhaust :D

Nice vid! I have a question: i drive a 160 too also sd33t. I currently do not have problems with the headgasket (everything is stock now. but increase in boost and fuel is coming along w.large IC. I have bought a steel headgasket on ebay.. I will only open it if my current gasket fails. What do you think about the steel headgasket? It seems to be well made. Cheers mate

what about an air brake on the intake instead? like a gas engine has its butterfly, it should work, shouldnt it? ive thought of it myself as original patrol brakes tend to not impress me too much when im done braking all the way down the local mountain roads.

.64 rear housing and a custom 3" dump. The 2860RS is too large for the SD33T - well if you want decent torque below 2000rpm it is.... Currently running a custom GT20 turbo and it makes 360nm by 2000rpm. :) The Garrett made 330nm at 2700rpm.

@lovethesouthcoast Not trying to prove anything in this video. I left the video to upload whilst I went to work. Read the description. I also uploaded it to show some guys on my 4x4 forums as they love the sound of an SD33T :) Before I did the head gasket I had a popping sound coming from the exhaust on idle - Turns out it was badly adjusted valves.

this fkin sounds tougher than my 4.2! Does the 2860RS have alot of exhaust whistle? do the bigger 2871's etc make the same note?

+LordEthan2 late reply! sorry! yeh the SD does sound better than the TD42 imo. Yeh the 2871 will whistle much the same, unless you have a wagon with longer exhaust. The TD42 will be raspier and not as deep when you're up it.

+LordEthan2 2863 would be great for low/mid torque and still make reasonable top end. only thing is that you will need a T25 to T3 flange adapter to mate it to the exhaust manifold (proving your're using the stock or standard aftermarket exhaust manifolds) If you get the T25 - make sure you get the .64 A/R for the housing. The .86 is too large and torque is quite a bit later in the RPM in my opinion) If you want a near bolt on solution - A mob over in WA do the Mitsubishi TD05 - the 16G would be a good choice also.

Nice engine so long boost is not to high. This machine have 5 bearings and he dont like to much boost/torque.

4 main bearings actually, currently have my SD33T apart for a full rebuild.
