Could you please review the YIHUA 982? Possibly the cheapest JBC clone, which seems quite decent, but the reviews are pretty mixed

I really appreciate your soldering iron reviews. Cheers, SDG. I bet inside these cartridges it’s like an old hakko 936 iron with a tip put over a ceramic heating element. But in these cartridges, the heater is friction fit and sealed inside. These tips could have a PTC thermistor in series with the heating element. That might explain why the heater resistance seems so low when cold. I recently read about the non disposable ‘flavoured addiction sticks’ [that V word youtube doesn’t like]: some do use the heater coil resistance alone for temperature feedback.

Thermocouple in series as mentioned in the other comment.

On some schematics for stations they put the thermocouple in series with the heater, measuring the temp by making a pause in the heating and taking a reading. Can't remember where it was, the TS80 perhaps.

all these tips work the same way, the resistive element also forms a bimetalic thermocouple

Yeah definitely thermocouple in series, as on the JBC C105, hakko t12, and many others.

Thanks for the review. I wonder if you could do a review of a JBC Pencil soldering iron. For example the JBC 30ST. Thanks.

Can you please make a video about mechanic 857DW plus SMD . And also the comparison between quick 857dw plus and mechanic 857dw plus

Quite common when checking how hot the internals of a power transformer are getting if there is no buried temp sensor. Had to do it a few times during testing for CE marking. You need to know how close your max power demand gets the internals of the transformer to the declared max temperatures. Using the temperature coefficient of the copper wire to determine temperature was quite interesting. Even more fun when someone from a CE test house was watching over your shoulder

Quite impressive for such a simple and low cost design. Maybe they are leading the way and you'll see some ultra high performance AC only station.. Hard or impossible part is coupling the thermocouple sensing to the tip while keeping it electrically isolated though.

14:40 are the diodes drawn round the wrong way? Maybe I’m being dumb but I can’t work out how it works unless both diodes do a 180

As the supply is AC, the LED and diode would conduct on the negative half cycles (assuming the schematic is correct), both reverse-biased on the positive cycles. The high reverse voltage on the LED is not too much of an issue because the LED is blinking slowly.

IMO, it's a safety hazard. No go!

@@bobweiram6321is that why there are no mains voltage irons for electronics? With a grounded tip I thought it would be ok.

@@davadoff The other issue is switching such high voltages generates noise which can induce current in the circuit you're soldering.

For someone starting out and not requiring a high thermal demand it's an ideal iron. The price is right too. Thanks for sharing the review, Steve.
