It is rather amusing to call the Sennneiser a "Rode Killer". Since Sennheiser is an old-school brand that has been around perhaps since before Henry Freedman (founder of Røde) was born. And Sennheiser is around 10x the size of Røde with a much broader range of products. But Røde is shaking up the traditional industry with some innovative products that take advantage of modern materials and manufacturing. A hypercardioid is much more suitable for the kind of shooting we see here. The little co-incident pair of cardioids on the Zoom shaver recorder are designed for ambient/music recording and not really for recording dialog.

I really like the ME66. The 416 is certainly better. But a lot more expensive too!

a sound testing comparing this item to other mics would be more sensible. Sennheiser me66 is a well known mic and an unboxing pointing out every little part would be interesting only to absolute beginners who would likely not be purchasing a $500 mic anyway.

These are excellent microphones - often used for professional TV newsgathering in the US. Keep an eye on the battery if you leave it installed for a long time. If it leaks and swells, it makes removing the power module from the microphone very difficult!

dtvdave1 I actually removed the AA after this video and am phantom powering the microphone as I've had bad luck with a batch of Duracells purchased only a couple of years ago all leaking at the same time. I have to repair my RCD tester at some point as the battery terminals weren't recoverable :(

If you need batteries, you should buy Eneloop rechargeables. Along with a good charger, of course, if you don’t already own one. Ansmann makes decent chargers.

Very thorough video, thank you. Can I ask whether you have used this as an on-camera mic? If so, would you recommend it? I'm currently looking for the best, affordable mic for a one-person documentary-style 'run and gun' setup with a Canon 5D mark IV.

It's a bit long for use on a DSLR, it suits a more traditional video camera better but it would work just fine in terms of audio.
