Nice job remembering to solder through hole IC's correctly.....alternating pins or swapping sides rather than heat destroying down one side and then the other. Note also lack of IC socket, probably a good idea given it's mains powered. Love the matt green Pcb.

Never killed a chip yet by soldering it in, maybe i'm just too fast with the iron. if they can take wave soldering then they should be ok with me. 🙂

It used to be what was taught, but I'm not sure if it ever really made much difference. I still do it for any fancy IC though

@@sdgelectronics well I suppose I was never taught to solder other than having ever joint inspected. Got a slap on the wrist for each bad joint, and all the women having a good fun ribbing me for not being able to be as good as them. I was 16 and the only guy in the room, you had to be good to work with them so I had to learn fast. I was in the aircraft department where the control panels that went into fighter jet cockpits were made. So I learnt on the job how to solder, lace cableforms, and assemble a lot of wires and pcbs in a small space.

nice little design, far better than a cap job.

That matte finish of the solder mask in combination with the high quality silkscreen came out looking really nice on that PCB!

Awesome video Steve I will be checking out the Power Integrations site. The matte green PCB looks gorgeous with the ENIG so I think I shall give AllPCB a shot too. Do you mean there's a risk of shock at the low side should there be a fault condition due to no isolation ?....cheers

Yes, especially where there's a chance for using non-polarised AC connectors/plugs. For example with 2-pin Fig 8 plugs or European 2-pin plugs you could swap the AC connections and the 230V would be passed straight through to the output. Even in normal conditions, if the MOSFET in the LNK3204 failed, you'd get 230V on the output too.

Nice project continuation Steve. Didnt you considered placing Varistor across mains ? LNK chips are common failure part in domestic appliances, i´ve heard they dont like any HV spikes.

Very thorough setup and calculations. Still, I do have a question, is this chip/system OK for consumer grade product?

Q: is this chip/system OK for consumer grade product? A: Yes, it is if you have the electronics fully enclosed, like a LED light bulb for example.

@@andrey00756845585 It may need further filtering on the AC side, and perhaps a TVS/MOV, to be compliant. Nice video!

Great video! I am looking forward to the future video that addresses isolation. Not that they care, but I think PI chose a terrible font for the name of their Excel spreadsheet tool. I had to copy it into a text editor and uppercase it to be certain it actually says PIXLS.

You results show way worse efficiency than the graph on the data sheet, what do you think is the reason?
