The real NHL simply refers to every aspect of the team not being dissected down to the most minute detail. Leafs have a healthy scratch of a third pair defenseman and it is talked about for 20 minute segments on 20 different shows. Toronto sports media is actually one of the Leafs biggest hurdles to overcome. The comment is 100% accurate. It's much like being a Yankee, Laker, or Cowboy. Steve's point is that Toronto generates more money to pay coaches and players salaries than any other franchise, and the quote is complaining about that. They're complaining about making more money because it's too hard, too much scrutiny. The media and fan base aren't toxic: they're bigger than other teams, care more, and pay more money.

@@maahes7139 His criticism, prompted by the Keefe quote, is very clearly and explicitly targeted at the "successful coaches" who claim Toronto isn't the "real NHL". The inference being the media and fan base scrutiny is too intense, unfair or difficult to handle. But that intensity occurs because this market is more invested, both emotionally and financially. To disagree is tantamount to saying "I prefer making less money because it's easier". He is calling those coaches and anyone else who agrees in a senior/executive NHL role losers because, per the Keefe quote, they would choose less success on and off the ice because it's easier. I fear you've arrived at the wrong conclusion.

I don't know, I took that comment more as... Toronto is a clown show where the media and fans have an excessive amount of influence that is ultimately detrimental to the team. The environment is toxic to both players and management. Just because another city isn't like that doesn't mean the fan base isn't passionate or engaged. NFL, NBA, MLB, I can't really think of another team who has to deal with the constant media circus, and bi-polar fan base, at least not to the level of the leafs.

Some of this is definitely just an overreaction to the comments and like honestly kind of gatekeeping. Viewership for the Stanley Cup playoffs is up 11% year over year, and Game 7 of Canucks-Oilers had higher viewrship than the Caitlin Clark WNBA game before it. "Well because it was the two Canadian teams left so all of Canada was watching". Meanwhile Stars-Kraken last year had a 50% higher viewership rating. I think it'd just a bad narrative to sell that "Leaf fans are the only true hockey fans" if you care about actually spreading the game because thats at least how Steve's reaction to Keefe's comments come off to me. Not saying Keefe's comments are necessarily warranted either, but I see them as Keefe commenting on the uniqueness of the Toronto market versus the rest of the NHL.

A couple months back, I was treated to a conversation where Leaf fans were discussing whether the Leafs should "go out and get" Sidney Crosby for their third line, because they were convinced that A) he could be had cheaply, B) he'd be fine with no longer being top six or on the power play because he's basically washed up (he scored 42 goals last year), and C) if he helped the Leafs win the Cup, his legacy "would no longer be in doubt." It's this kind of stuff that makes people hate the Leafs.

Steve’s archetypal Leafy overreaction/trauma response is why Keefe should feel relieved he’s on ANY other team. Yeeesh. It’s not about being a “loser league”, it’s about the Leafs team and fanbase being obnoxiously Leafy. Period. I also think Steve kinda misunderstood the quote and read too much into it. Those coaches were essentially telling Keefe he should be happy he’s left a toxic and cursed organization with more psychological issues than any therapist could handle, and that he actually has a chance at winning a cup now… 😂

I think a lot of the people in the comments missed the point of this, Steve isn't crying necessarily about the Leafs. There's a point to saying that it's ironic coming from an extension of the Toronto media (which he acknowledges) but I think he's more upset about the lack of pride and overabundance of contempt that is coming from those coaches that reached out to Keefe. I'm saying this as a Boston sports fan who has constant media attention around all its major sports teams (which gets ridiculous the majority of the time) and I get how Keefe and/or other coaches might not want that much attention and scrutiny. HOWEVER, I agree with Steve especially when he brings up the point of NBA role players making ~$100 million and that the NHL doesn't seem to be able to get enough to start giving its players those types of contracts and the scrutiny of organizations like the Leafs, Bruins, or any other big market team is a factor in garnering attention that will eventually lead to more money coming into the league. With that being said, I think that both Steve is right and wrong and don't fully agree with his tirade but as someone who can relate to his level of commitment, passion, and love for a team, he is absolutely within his right to speak on the NHL and the Leafs in this manner. If anyone disagrees with me, I would love to hear it from another perspective but I think he's got a point.

He keeps saying players want to play for US teams so they can “hide” in small markets which is honestly pretty insulting, like they aren’t willing to take criticism. They are professional players playing in a professional league. Yeah the NHL isn’t as big as the other major sports but it’s because the barriers for the average joe and kids to play it are so much higher than other sports. You have to have ice to play on, all the equipment, be able to afford it all, etc. That’s why soccer (football) is so popular because you just need a ball to play. Also, if the players are “hiding” in US teams, what are you insinuating they are hiding from? An unhinged, nitpicky, overwhelming Canadian commentary? Yeah can’t really blame the players for wanting to play in a market that doesn’t report on their every single mistake. Steve is 100 percent correct. The NHL has always been a league with a niche mentality. What’s weird is seeing the journalists/ former players with media jobs say the same nonsense. They benefit the most from the fans passion & interest in the sport, yet they speak the same whiny drivel. Why don’t they quit their media gigs then? Do they think people are interested in their charming personalities & not the sport that they cover?

I just wish leaf fans were more realistic and stopped pretending this team that’s done nothing deserves to win anything. Maybe you’d win if you got in the trenches with your boys like any other fan base instead of finding every little thing to throw a hissy fit about. It’s crazy how support works a lot better than pressure. “Thats just my opinion though.” Said the rest of the NHL

Agreed on comments here. The Leafs and their players play in the #1 media market (by far) in North America. By that I mean no US based team has the same media attention in the US that the Leafs have in Canada - not NHL, ANY PRO SPORTS TEAM. Canada is Toronto centric, all we get is Toronto Toronto Toronto - even the 4k broadcasts - about 1/3 of the commercials on there are TORONTO/ONTARIO based commercials (radio station, and especially gambling - read the fine print "Ontario only"). It's pathetic. When you make a mistake on the ice - EVERYONE IN CANADA knows about. If a Wpg Jet makes a mistake - no one outside of Manitoba knows, or cares. THAT is the ISSUE. Leaf fans, there's reason your team has only been to the final 4 only a couple of times since '67 - and why a lot of your players excel once they leave your team. It will never change - no Cup will ever be won in Toronto again.

Steve utterly missing the point here. It's not the scrutiny that makes Toronto unreal. It's the way that your fanbase has internalized its trauma and lashes out with it whenever there's a bump in the road. You're the divorcee that nobody would ever date because you're still busy unhealthily obsessing over all the ways it went wrong in your past. There is no blank slate with you. "You should WANT to be a part of that" .... dude, NOBODY wants to be a part of something like that.

It's telling that Dangle and Leafs fans in general get labelled toxic. The immortal Bill Shankly once said: "Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that." That is the mentality of football fans all over the world. Hockey fans, with a few notable exceptions, don't share that mentality, and it hurts the sport.

Steve's reaction is completely missing the point. He is saying that Toronto's atmosphere, the media, the expectations aren't like anything else. You're heavily scrutinized year after year, having to make dumb public apologies after calling players out, the Toronto media is soft. Players are seen "like gods" as Marner put it. Now Keefe is going to a organization, market, fan base that celebrates its players, doesn't unncessarily criticize every little detail, and can focus on hockey. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the Dallas Cowboys and Yankees of the NHL. They are the center of attention and the fan base is entitled. The "real NHL" doesn't consist of having to walk on egg shells every day of your life, hoping you don't say the wrong thing. I for one, would absolutely hate if that was the culture in the company I worked for.

Steve took the quote very much out of context I think. It is kinda left up to interpretation but I see it more like just saying that if you're on another NHL team (more so in the US) if you lose they don't crucify you or even care nearly as much so there's much less stress day in day out. Leafs fans will 100% praise their team to no end when good things are happening but can get extremely nasty when things go bad. The media there is definitely a circus show as well.

Steve , you are 110% on point here and you made a fan for life with this rant. The NHL is now unquestionably the biggest joke of a professional league in North America after the recent changes to MLB, and I love seeing someone who loves hockey so much that they can call out this BS. Hockey is such an echo chamber of closed-off thinking that this sport literally exists to serve its small, conservative fanbase with no legitimate ambition (or competency) to try and capture the cultural sports landscape outside of a few cities.

Hey guys, great channel and amazing episode as always. Steve, I think you're wrong on this one and the other coaches in the NHL are correct. There's a reason a Canadian team has not won the Stanley Cup in over 30 years. Canadian teams, the Maple Leafs in particular, are managed and coached in a way that makes them soft. We've all talked about this for the last 7 or 8 years, so should not be surprise. We did actually go out and get Ryan Reeves, Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi to try to protect our superstars, but then we probably neutered them with the overarching message from on high: "don't get penalties". Even after we got those guys, the other teams had no problem taking liberties with our top players. There has been a little bit of pushback periodically, but nothing with any substance. Oh well, at least we didn't get a penalty...

You guys are not getting the point. Its that the media in toronto has too much influence in that franchise. Great example, Phil Kessel and tbe mass amounts of players that the media craps on, those guys get traded, and see immediate success anywhere else. Pittsburgh press is brutal too, and demand trades when somebody is playing slightly below their standard, but the franchises dont listen. And that resulted in 5 cups since Toronto's last one

I think the whole "hiding" narrative isn't as much of a thing any more in the age of hyper media attention with social media. There are more and more people reacting and criticizing athletes publicly than ever. It may not be as much of a fishbowl in certain markets, but people are always talking and sharing opinions and reporters are always stirring the pot. Professional athletes have a tougher time than ever avoiding that kind of stuff and it has made some markets that already had issues with being a fishbowl (like Toronto) unbearable for some.

It's funny Steve calls them losers when its us who hasn't won a damn thing since 1967. And is 100% because the media and toxic fanbase actually rubs off on the team. Its not a curse its just cause and effect. You know when top players come to Toronto? When they just want to end a career and collect some glory on the way out. Look at Zack Hyman, losers say he was too expensive and now he is thriving! Bozak and Kadri instant stanley cup winners as soon as they leave TO. Honestly, we peaked here in Toronto a long time ago, I'd say in the Pat Quinn Era. Since then the city and the people in general have just deteriorated and we are just beginning the decline. I love Steve but It's just projection to call actual winners "losers".
