Edmonton perspective on Nurse/Media/Players: The media in this market are despised by most fans, and the players routinely get asked questions that try to feed some stupid negative narrative and it's no secret the players get pissy. Usually young players are the targets most of the time, and with Spec's recent tweet now deleted, there is definitely some "Don Cherry" type mentality among the media. "More Saskatchewan, less Stockholm." Phrases like that are far too common and I think the leadership group just gets sick of hearing them. NOW, in saying all of that, Nurse has been coddled by the media since he arrived, the media constantly tries to justify his contract and anyone that says anything negative about it will get a response from some of these media guys that, for lack of a better term, is condescending. The battle among "analytics vs eye-test" is strong in Edmonton, with the fans and media constantly at arms over it. The media for the most part is definitely anti-analytics, and when the media's favorite players have rough metrics they will bend themselves backwards to attack the numbers or "nerds" as some media members have called us. When the media's whipping boys have strong metrics but make a single mistake they get crucified. (Look at the history of the media's treatment of Jesse Puljujarvi and Ethan Bear for example.) More notably look at Evan Bouchard's treatment when the team started 3-12-1 this season... Trying to explain everything in one post in a KZbin comment section is way too difficult, but that's the best kind of summary I have.

As a Devils fan, I immediately love Sheldon Keefe for the meltdown he just caused Steve to have lol. But on a real note unless part of the interview wasn't shown on screen during that segment, I interpreted that quote differently as meaning more how the Leafs as an organization are run not the media scrutiny?

Nothing makes me laugh harder than watching Toronto Sports Media (of which this podcast is a part of) clutch their pearls when outsiders point out the obvious. Notice how Steve pivots the Keefe quote to somehow be about the "fan scrutiny". Jesse said it perfectly--Keefe's comments aren't about the fan bas scrutiny, it's literally the Maple Leafs Media Industry which fuels two 24hr radio stations, in addition to TV and podcasts, newsprint journos and bloggers. I personally can only listen to one radio show, every day (especially in the regular Hockey season) because both of the two major networks feature regurgitated content. The Leafs could win a game 7-0 and the next day the Craig Buttons, Nick Kypreos', JD Bunkis', Brent Gunning's, Jeff Marek's (and so on) will somehow fit a critical slant into their "Leafs" segment. We fans complain that for all the talk about Leafsnet or Toronto Sports Network criticisms from other Canadian markets, we can't even get true regional-based broadcasts. Hell, when Bowen calls out the lower bowl, the media turns around to say "Stop shouting at clouds, old man" and then the next day bemoaning the lack of passion Leafs teams see on the road Every syllable that a Leafs player or a coach utters gets forensically scrutinized. Then, if they attempt to clarify, it's labeled as "walking it back". Adam concludes this comment is "a loser comment". I'm a long suffering Leafs fan, since 1980. That said, I've watched the TO sports media grow into what it is today. It's disingenuous to think that doesn't play a factor. The comparisons to the Bruins, or the Rangers markets are also disingenuous. For one, they've seen success in more recent times and secondly, they have surrounding Baseball, Football and Basketball franchises which ALL outweigh the NHL franchise fan base. The Leafs are like England's Men's National football squad with a splash of Dallas Cowboys bravado. The media cranks out the content and obviously, the rabid fan bases soaks it up--only to turn right around and be passive aggressively critical (sometimes overtly). It's wild how those in Toronto Sports media who trot out the "boo-hoo" narrative to such comments, speak volumes. It's wild that they can't see the forest for the trees

One thing I’d note is that it isn’t super uncommon in the NFL for teams to add picks ahead of time in preparation for packaging on draft day to move up. It could be the idea in Chicago. For example, this year the MN Vikings added a late first for two seconds, and the plan was to package those to jump from 11 to perhaps the top 7, to get a guy they liked. They had no way to know he would still be there, but they wanted to have the ammo ready. Ironically, the guy fell to them without moving up, but it may be the same strategy. Also, thanks for getting a Columbus moment in! Fire the cannon, boys.

I think that quote is being taking too much out of context. I look at that quote like this. 6 guys step on the ice to play hockey. 3 forwards, 2 D-Men and 1 goalie. 5 of those guys play the same game of hockey,1 of those guy doesn't. The goalie plays hockey, yes but the goalie is playing an entirely different game of hockey to his 5 teammates. Goalie's can't play the puck everywhere, goalies can catch the puck, goalies can freeze the puck and force a stoppage of play. Goalies play in entirely different gear to the other 5 guys and yet it's the same game. I think the "real NHL" quote isn't that the others are losers but more that 31 of the 32 teams it's a similar feeling and experience and Toronto is the exception. In the example I used above Toronto are the goalie on the ice and all the other teams are the forwards and D-Men. And not necessarily that nobody wants to have the attention that Toronto do but that being in Toronto is an entirely different experience in the NHL compared to everywhere else. Doesn't mean that it's a bad thing, but that it's different and not the overall experience compared to all other teams.

I haven't read the article but I think the 'real NHL' comment is more about things being more down to earth in US markets from a business and culture perspective. No one in Jersey would say they're treated like gods or assume they're not gonna get traded. Last season Fitzy was going to trade Jesper Bratt for a first round draft pick if he didn't sign his deal. Who ever told any of the core 4 that? And Jersey, isn't the only team that has the expectations that players perform and sign reasonable deals. The whole Reinhart deal conversation is an example of real NHL vs Toronto. Honestly why does anyone in Toronto care what Keefe says or does now you've got Berube and lots of wanted that guy. Instead of wasting time and energy on Keefe focus on Berube and the bright future ahead.

Prior to that, 31 and 33 goals was his career-high, and he struggled out of the gate last season. Seems like a streaky goal-scorer to me. And that shooting percentage is so crazy that he won't be able to live up to that every single season. I can see why Florida extends him, but I can also see a reason for them to move on. You have Guentzel and Marchessault on the open market. Maybe you take a chance on a guy like Bertuzzi or Toffoli. You already have Matty-T and Verhaeghe and Barkov. It would be nice to keep him. Sorry, but as an international Leafs fan (who reads A LOT of what Canadian media outlets publish about the team), when I see players complain about how hard the media or city is on them, I just laugh. Have a look at the sort of criticisms that footballers get in Europe and South America. Have a look at how BRUTAL that stuff is, then come back to us fans and say that again. Give me a break. Its the same as when NBA reporters asked Jokic about Heat fans and he was like "... I played in Serbia..." where fans are rabid and crazy. There seems to be a real lack of awareness and perspective as to what harsh criticism actually looks or sounds like, and I think that often passion is mistaken for being undue pressure. For the most part I would argue that in fact, if we look at Toronto specifically, the media seems very tame and almost hesitant to blatantly criticise certain players, and instead seem to overly praise players when they do well.

48:16 "I believe the primary reason for having a salary cap is to foster the growth of the sport, particularly in America. If Canadian teams were not bound by a salary cap, they would likely attract top players and have the ability to pay them whatever they desire. It raises the question of how other teams can compete with those based in states with no income taxes."

That 4th goal against the Oilers is a perfect example of what I've been saying about Nurse, where he's been a victim of the really bad goals that Skinner lets in. There wasn't anything wrong with how Nurse defended that play, but it counted as a minus against him. He hasn't been outstanding by any measure, but he's been just fine realistically but he's getting murdered by the media and fans.

1:13:00 lol. Leaf's didn't have to retain on Dion because of the salary they took back in Michalek ($4M, 18 games over 2 years), Greening ($2.65M), and Cowen ($3.1M, who they illegally bought out because he was injured at time) was greater than what the Sens gave up. AND at least the Sens made it to the Conference finals with Phaneuf on their team. Although he is the sole reason of the Senators demise, not waiving his NMC during the Vegas expansion so the team couldn't protect Methot.

1982 was when the Oilers were eliminated by the Kings in the first round in s best of five. The series included the Miracle on Manchester. The series also led certain sports books on Vegas to ban betting on games involving Edmonton Oilers and being officiated by Andy Van Hellemond.
