Nice video once again. Interesting to see how they do with a drill bit. Maybe the weight difference of the drills is smaller than on het chissels.

Yeah I'll do a proper video comparing them in a well controlled way but it's hard to get bits that match closely between the two systems. The shank on a 12mm SDS max bit is a bit crazy

I went with SDS-Max. Great hammer. Only used it for chiseling.

I got that DeWalt DCH263 in the mail today and immediately put it to use knocking the corner off some old concrete stairs to allow water to drain through there. It was okay, but I felt like it'd be best suited to drilling not smashing. Nevertheless I got what I needed done and there's a fist sized hole there now. Need to clear the other side out and ensure a clean channel feeding it, but would have been a real "see you n t" to do by hand. Recip saw opened up the opposite side by removing a small triangle of timber. Thanks again. :-) aaannnnddd about THIS video, I'm not surprised by this outcome and will immediately buy a big flexvolt SDS Max unit if I ever need to do some proper breaking work. :-)

Quantifying chiselling will be a hard one. Might have to pour a long thin slab. Maybe 100mm wide by 50mm thick by 1000mm long. Do each test 50mm from the end. Then you can chop the end off after each test to square it. You'll still only get 6-10 tests per slab, which is pretty wasteful

Yeah it's a big challenge for sure nobody's really been able to do it very well yet. I'm working on an ETA style impact tester, which will give Joules but still not really capture performance. I have a few other ideas too, but they're all destructive and so resource-heavy

@BoltahDownunder i think just doing 20 runs and averaging will be your best bet. Just need some slabs of consistent thickness and hardness. Can also try TTCs wedge into a hydraulic ram. Simpler version would be 2 steel plates with bolts through them and compression springs on the outside. Time how long it takes to drive a wedge between them.

At the end of the day I want to quantify "how fast can this thing do this job" so yeah finding a bunch of concrete that needs breaking and doing it systematically is the way to go. TTC's rig, or any other cumulative test like how deep can it drive a ground rod, are all fine for ranking hammers but not strictly describing their chipping performance. But it is way easier and more convenient to do at home so I'm exploring all the options

I appreciate your practical real world approach. TTC regularly misses the mark too, though overall he's a pretty useful chap

That sds max did really well if you consider that most sds plus hammers are way less powerful than the one you used in this test

Yeah for sure! This was about the biggest SDS plus in the market. And the max is one of the smallest, so if you get an average one of each the difference would be massive

@@BoltahDownunder yeap because there has been a few times to chip concrete with the usual sds plus hammers and i felt they really lacked the power an sds max would have smoked them in my opinion and i also burned through all of my batteries

Yeah, see my reply separately. I concur. If I need to do that in any quantity I'll blow a grand on a big daddy SDS MAX.

Suggestion, bang that data in a google doc spreadsheet so it can be shared as a reference :-)

I bought the GBH 18V-34 CF, what am I missing from what it has if I would have bought instead a GBH 18V-36 C? I need to break a few tiles and some cement here in there, also use it for a more powerful drill...Confused because they have the same price with 2 8ah. Will the SDS max to SDS plus adapter get me 1:1? Please help and thank you!

You can't get 1:1 because the 36 has 7j impact compared to 5.8. but it also can't drill rotation only so they're different tools
