I got phenomenal tones in the past using an SM57 at a 45 degree angle close on the cab and using a large diaphragm condenser about 3 feet back. This was for metal guitar. First I would place the SM57 listening through isolation headphones, then I would move the condenser around while palm muting till I found the best sound. Close micing only is too harsh.

this is very helpful! If i use two mics in a simple daw, and if there is a reverse phase from one of the mics, what interference would you recommend to reverse the phase?

Most use "off-axis" to mean the mic is rotated relative to the cabinet.

Off-Axis miking can involve rotating or changing the angle of the mic and/or just moving off center. We do the same thing for drums.

​@@MusicTechHelpGuy Never heard axis refer to position along the speaker. That's unnecessarily confusing :) Better to say cap, cap edge, cone and cone edge to describe the position, and say on or off axis to describe the angle of the mic. With all the IR's floating around these days, it's best to keep our terminology straight on this. "Cap edge on-axis" obviously means the mic is to the side but pointed straight. Calling that "off-axis" would just be misleading. Other than that, good video as usual, been a subscriber for years!

Meh. That's not guitar recording, that's guitar amp recording. Came here trying to find an acoustic recording demo and only after a lot of talking figured it's just about recording cabs.
