Those yellow books are called "Cliff notes". They summarize books and give basic insights on classic books. They are mostly used by people in school who don't want to read the full book.

In the US, when you get an ID, you have to show proof of residence and have a picture taken. In some professions, you will be fingerprinted, but those are separate, not government crime databases. I believe it's covered under "privacy" in our constitution.

That "weird manga" is one of the most popular literature poem of all time: "The Divine Comedy", from Dante Alighieri, illustrated by a famous ancient painter named Gustave Dorè. Those shown in the book were the sinners in the hell, punished for their sins with terrible tortures. The opera is about 800 years old, written in ancient Italian (called "vulgar" by latins) and portays a journey through the Hell, the Purgatory (where mild sinners can recover their souls before going to Paradise) and, of course, Paradise. It's written all in rhymes and it uses a lot of retorical figures. I think the opera is banned in Islam because Dante was a radical christian and put the prophet in the hell in his opera, among the sowers of discord (because he created another religion, for the christians' point of view of that era). Here in Italy the opera is studied in schools but I know in some schools islamic people are exempted to do that if they don't want to. Basically the opera is considered as the mother of the Italian language, and the most studied part is the "Inferno" (The hell).

GREAT movie! The build up to the end is epic! To clarify something, they didn't have his real name. "John Doe" is a generic name police assign to a criminal or victim when they don't know their real name yet. Loved this! Hoping you guys will do The Hobbit trilogy after Lord Of The Rings too. Think thing that looked like a scale in the beginning is a metronome. Musicians use them to set a beat and to keep rhythm according to the sheet music notation. The black and yellow book the officer handed to Mills is Cliff's Notes. It is a summary of a novel that can be read in a few minutes and covers the main details and information of the whole book.

That ticking device at the start is a ‘metronome’ its used by musicians to keep time. Its a tool that produces a steady beat to help musicians play rhythms accurately. Pity music is forbidden ( right ? ) , lots of great music from the west that you could react to if it wasn’t.
@markhill3858
@markhill3858 Ай бұрын
Lol .. I really don't think music is forbidden :) in fact, there's a thing called Persian musical scale, an alternative to western (ie Pythagorean) musical scale. I knew a very old Turkish musician and he had to understand both to play all music.

Also, the call to prayer in the Islamic world .. guy gets in one of those turrets on a mosque .. and he SINGS to indicate prayer times :) note this music doest easily conform to western notes! I assume that's the Persian scale.

The song in the opening credits is “Closer Precursor” by Nine Inch Nails, a remix of “Closer”. There was an alternate ending that was only story boarded and not filmed, but in that ending Somerset kills John Doe to spare Mills ruining his life. He shoots John Doe and when mills looks at him confused, Somerset says “I’m retiring anyways”.

FYI...the yellow books the Officer gave to Detective Mills are called "Cliff Notes"... Basically the Cliff Notes were a series of books used by High School and College students for exams. The books ranged on any number of subjects, and If a book is too hard, too big, or too complicated for a person to understand, the Notes would give you a summary and break everything down directly. They provided all the necessary info and eliminated the subtext and elements that may get lost in translation. That's what Mills reads to understand all the reference that Somerset gave him.

The opening music is a remix of "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails. The Seven Deadly Sins are a Catholic doctrine (although some other branches of Christianity use it too) of 7 behaviors that have the potential to lead someone into sin. They're not necessarily always considered bad in and of themselves in moderation (like it's okay to be angry if wronged or find a member of the opposite sex attractive or enjoy food and so on), but they're seen as gateways to sin and evil if left unchecked and there's extensive writings about each sin and why it's wrong. A lot of the murders are inspired by Christian inspired literature from the Middle Ages and early modern period such as The Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, and The Canterbury Tales. Particularly The Divine Comedy where the main character (who is literally the author) goes through Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell (the book on Hell is by far the most popular part and is titled "Dante's Inferno"). A "pound of flesh" is a reference to the Shakespeare play "The Merchant of Venice" where a Jewish loanshark makes an agreement where if the debtor reneges on the loan that he will take "one pound of flesh" from him; although this agreement is later breached since he cannot guarantee that blood or bone or other material would not be inadvertently collected as well. The lawyer who is murdered has a very Jewish sounding name (although technically his surname could be German, but it's a surname most common among Jews), so that's also a reason why John Doe might have picked that particular method as well. "Dick" is slang for a detective (either a police office or private investigator) as well as slang for penis.

The object is a metronome, it is balanced such that once set in motion it will continue ticking for a very long time, sometimes days. As others said it is used for music, but in this example it is being used as a sleeping aid, which isn't uncommon. The metronome can help slow breathing and heartrate by focusing on it. In addition, classical conditioning can work where you use the metronome to fall asleep, and thus train your body to fall asleep to the sound of the metronome.

@13:00 When Brad Pitt says, "thank you Lord" he has the Cliff's Notes. For a lot of big classic literature, especially the hard to understand ones, there is a company that makes little booklets that break it down to a simple explanation of what the book says, and the series of booklets are called "Cliff's Notes." A lot of students use Cliff's Notes when doing reports in school where they need to study old literature. @34:00 I agree that chlidren are not expendable, a human life is a human life. This is one of those things where tv often presents propaganda - in this case "Pro-Choice." Most Christians agree with me, and most atheists are either on the fence or on the other side. Generally speaking. It's actually one of the favorite talking points in pretty much every presidental election in the United States ever since Roe vs Wade, if not earlier. It isn't a "feel good movie" but it is a make-you-think movie. Utopia vs dystopia, good vs evil, right vs wrong. However, in the end, and I've seen lots of satanists argue this, if God (or another who claims to be doing God's will) is to destroy the wicked, doesn't that put blood on God's hands? Just as the detective at the end executes a form of judgement against the serial killer as "wrath," is not "God's wrath" also murder? To that I would say that life is a gift. If you use it for evil, you forfeit the privilege. Murder is not the same as the death sentence because one is a judgement against an evildoer and the other is senseless violence against the innocent. But then the question is: who has the right or ability to judge someone as wicked? And satanists will claim that evil does not really exist. I believe that love is what causes there to be good and bad. Also, whatever exactly it is that makes humans different than animals; how humans are created in God's image, but animals are not.
