It took us YEARS to catch one from our pontoon just up river from where you are there! I swear they were laughing at us! Eventually, we filled onion sacks with bread which we tied onto the pontoon and replenished daily. The tide filled the water with bread particles which the fish got used to and, after a few days, began feeding on. After 3 or 4 days we came down and caught them on bread flake with light coarse tackle. It was a momentous occasion in mine and my dad's fishing career!

Hi fish locker. In the past I've used size 14 treble for mullet. It can make for more hook ups but because its a very small hook it does very little damage. A larger treble would put more holes in the fish (it wouldn't work anyway with mullet, probably spook them) but the wee ones are great for keeping the bread on and hooking. Great vids thanks a million.
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
- Hi Cuan, that is a method I've seen quite a bit in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands for mullet. As you say they will give more chance of a hookup but trebles are still a bit too savage for me. Fine if you're fishing for the table as most of them were. Tight lines. :D

This was awesome and very apt, as I was fishing last weekend for mullet at a creek in Australia. I wish that I had seen this video first because everything you said made sense and while I made my bread bait, i rolled the whole piece then attached it to the hook. It stayed in shape and it was not a plain white bread, in fact, it came back from each cast in tact. I did not make the bread crumble, so it would have been too firm and nothing coming off the bait to entice the fish. I know what you mean about them being a frustrating fish to catch but get some amusement out of watch others try heh. The creek where I fished for them is zero to 1.5 metres, low to high, where we camp and it's hard to bear when you see them jumping and cast right into them and still not catch them. Poddys (young mullet) are caught by trapping and are prized live bait and are easier caught than the adults. Your info and experience is highly appreciated John and I hope one day to give a story on catching one of the damned things lol. Eerie though that you made a video about catching mullet about the same day almost as when I was trying to catch one. It probably should have been me kicking the side of the boat and eating yogurt instead of your little bloke, heh. Tight lines John
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
Nomad - The small ones are a killer livebait all over the world. Funnily enough though, harder to catch over here than the big ones. You’d be better off with a cast net I think for them. Tight lines and good luck on your mullet hunt. 😉👍🏻🎣🐟
@nomad74125 жыл бұрын
@@TheFishLocker horses for courses as they say. The poddy traps that I've seen over here are perspex and have dimensions set out by the fisheries. You are allowed a certain amount of trapped mullet for use only as live bait I believe. The traps I have seen use bread as the bait (funnily enough lol) but of good design. easy to make and very effective. Have a great days fishing mate.
@geraldlrstubbs3 жыл бұрын
I used to do the same as you, fishing off the back of my sloop, 'Knipa', in a marina. I used to seed bread bits every evening at the same time for a few days without fishing. As they got used to it they used to come for their grub. I had problems with single hooks until I started using tiny trebles equivalent in size to a single hook of 14 or 16. I used to completely bury the hook in a hard paste of bread and when they took the bait I did not strike but let them take it down. Mullet is one of my favourite eating fish. I poach it and it is delicious hot, but the following day cold with a salad it is superb because of the jelly that forms around it. Totally succulent and tasty. Your comments about the tides did not apply because this was in the Med where the tides under normal circumstances are in the region of 20 cm. where I was at Gruissan, near Narbonne.

Interesting what you said about the possibility of blanking and not to get disheartened by it. We need the blank days in order to appreciate the good days. Just imagine that you could guarantee to catch fish every time you put a bait in the water - how long would you continue to fish? What would be the point? It's a bit like playing golf, some days it's good and other days not so good. Would you bother to play if you could guarantee a hole in one every time you hit the ball? Wouldn't it make the whole thing pointless?
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын

Terrific video thanks. I’ve never fished for mullet but always wanted to give it a go. Is your boat an Orkney 520? I had a Strikeliner for about 5 years before I left Jersey and really loved it. Not had a boat since I moved to Cornwall.

I put plenty of bread in and get them feeding then small piece of squid on the waggler much tougher than bread caught here & overseas with this also small flashy mackerel droppers work with the occasional bass bonus
@TheFishLocker4 жыл бұрын
- I've uses little tiny strips of mackerel before. But never found them to take squid. Interesting. ;)

Nice vid fella. Do you know why the mullet and bass follow the fish on the hook? I don’t know why. But It reminds me a bit of when the fish breed, the females swim slightly oddly releasing eggs and the males all fly in close to the female.
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
Ryan E - With certain fish like bass it’s like a pack feeding mentality. They see the one fish being erratic and looking like it’s chasing something so they want in on the action. Sometimes if you have 2 hooks on a lure that’s how you can get a double hookup on on Lure. With the mullet it could be a safety in numbers thing? 🤷🏻♂️ Some species during mating season will follow each other, Like if you hook a female Turbot a couple of males may follow it to the surface. 😉🐟🎣

Am I correct on saying that is a Golden grey mullet? Had some cracking mullet as a teenager in my local harbour, two over 6lbs in one day.
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
gary lawlor - No mate both those were thick lipped. Some of them at times of the year are quite golden. I don’t know why, possibly because they’re up in dirty water in the rivers? 🤷🏻♂️🎣🐟

I was in the Basque country a few years ago, on the coast west of Santander and Bilbao and after we had booked into an hotel we walked down to the harbour and the water was alive with enormous shoals of grey mullet. I asked one of the locals if people fished for them and he said that they were very bad to eat and would make you ill. When we came down later that night I realized why he had said that when I saw an enormous arch set in the harbour wall which was a foul drain, and the water absolutely heaving with mullet feeding...

Another great video John,I’m in Falmouth for two weeks,going to have a look at Pendennis point at low tide this afternoon,probably going to fish there in a day or two,would really like to catch a decent wrasse,do you think I stand a chance from there?
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
John Wadsworth - Yes you do. It’s very snaggy. It’s prime wrasse territory around the point and down the west side towards the beaches. 👍🏻🎣 Good luck.

I'm sure you remarked on you once living in whitby's, but your accent realy sounds cumbrian. Been to whitby's folk festival a few times and caught loads of mackerel off the pier there, is mullet nice to eat? Thanks John you are a star!
@TheFishLocker4 жыл бұрын
- Whitby is a nice spot to visit isn't it. Some people eat mullet but you have to look at what an animal eats for how good it is to eat. Mullet eat algae and weed and harbour mud and the slime off the bottom of boats. So no, not very nice haha.

Great video from You & Mr Fishlocker Junior John! I've often seen shoals of Mullet swimming around but never tried to catch one! We've seen some really huge ones in the estuaries & rivers when in France too! What are they like for eating? I've heard some conflicting reports!

I used to fish for Mullet in the 70’s & 80’s in Ramsgate harbour. Hooked dozens, but never landed a single one, even with a drop net! Is it safe to eat fish caught in a marina like this with all the copper from the anti-fouling paint and rubbish & turds from the boats?
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
- They are a frustrating fish to catch. Haha. You have to fish light so theres little to no chance of lifting one on the hook length up a harbour wall. I personally wouldn't eat them, they feed on the algae on the undersides of the boats, so must ingest some antifouling. They are very good bait though. ;)

Good afternoon. Just discovered you on KZbin, you make great, informative videos for beginners. Had a great holiday in Portofino this summer, saw many people fishing and plan on returning next year with a rod. Been buying lots of equipment on a budget. Question I have is: got myself a silver 85g lure... I’m planning on surfcasting with a 9ft rod... is a 85g Lure too heavy to cast from the shore? Regards. Vince.👍
