It's a cartridge (gunpowder cannister) starter system used on early jets to "kickstart" the turbine into life wth a cloud of smoke! It was used on several postwar jets, inlcuding the Canberra bomber and many others...

I remember this Seahawk, I was involved in it's rebuild at Station Flight,Rnas Culdrose Nr Helston back in the 70's.We did a few air displays with it till Yeovilton's Historic Flight comandeered it.I remember replacing the engine one weekend.

I was involved with the restoration of this aircraft at Culdrose in 76 and 77. It was great marshaling it for the first public flight in front of the television cameras. We went to RAF St Mawgan for a display then I went to Yeovilton with it on my own for another display. This is where the top of the cartridge starter would not come off for reloading the cartridges. Our chief at station flight Culdrose even had jumpers made with the ace of diamonds and WV 908 on. The pilot that flew it for the first time after rebuild happened to be the lsat pilot that flew it before it retired the first time.

Imagine the difference in cockpit view at takeoff for the pilots when they transitioned from Sea Fury to Sea Hawk.

Years ago I was rabbiting with my old dog on the back of Portsdown Hill and the sea fury roared over head and flew down onto HMS Daedulus for it`s display. At one point I was looking down onto the pilot in his cockpit. Danny boy the jack russel terror passed away after 14 happy years. Those rabbits didn`t stand a chance.

Yeah, and it was a disaster. These aircraft were decent when they came into service, but they were outclassed by planes like the F-8 Crusader and early American jets.
