Best paddle of the trip? YOU decide, ha ha. I first did this trip in 2009(See video) and it will always have a special little place in my heart. I always assumed the South Cornish coast was the best, but within an hour of being at Portreath in June 2009, I realised that, that statement was about to be seriously questioned. The 2 trips I did, back then were awesome, and I thought a return visit could NEVER live up to those 2 days, but this surpassed the lot. Ralph's Cupboard, Basset's Cove, the shipwreck Secil Japan, Deadman's Cove, Hell's Mouth, Fishing Cove..........all wonderful places to be encountered, throw in fantastic coastal scenery, some classic caves, seals, seabirds, and even some friendly locals on sit on kayaks, and you have all the ingredients of a classic. To top it all off, the BEST weather we've had in years, and there you have it the best trip of 2013, and possibly ever, couldn't say it was better than Staffa, or Handa Island, but most certainly as good. The sheer length of the video is indicative of what we experienced, and I've still left out the rock gardens, and pitch black caves, and tunnels we encountered in the fog!!! Doing the video was an episode also, my computer got a 'Worm blaster' virus, which put me out of action a while, and I had to record a lot of new music to go on the video, which is much harder now as my 'Music room' has been taken over by the new log burner. Special mention to Paul, and Aaron who we met at Ralph's Cupboard, proper salt of the Earth types.

Have you EVER had better weather down there? I prefer it calm like this, I know some prefer the surf, but I think it prevents proper close inspection of the caves, paddle throughs, etc. plus it's a whole lot more relaxing, and safer. Cheers mate, glad you like it.

A proper Summer at last, by the time we'd done the day before this, we could feel that the weather could actually be taken for granted. I have never felt like this since 1989, do you remember that summer? That was truly the best summer, just before I started Diving, and going out to sea proper. We'll probably pay a very heavy price for this next year, ha ha, you see, it will be drier underwater.

It's unlikely we will ever get a trip like this Cornwall trip. 11 days of paddling in near perfect conditions, it's not just the wind on this coast, it's also the surf, to get a lack of both for SO long was amazing.

+gkarjala Howdy doody Cousin, ha ha, nice one. Yeah I do all the music, glad you like the video, but don't go thinking the weather is always like this, this is the exception. But I know you guys have your fair share of weather also, ours is just miserable wind and rain, we don't have the extremes like you do in some States.

How-do Paul, I was very disappointed, on reviewing the footage, of how little you are in shot!!! Aaron, was in a lot, but sadly, what you see, is all there was of you. It has to be one of THE greatest ever days for kayaking along this coast. Has Godrevy EVER been so flat? The fog was amazing, in the morning it was eerie, but later on it was really spooky. The trip back was quite a challenge, and though it was flat calm, I got a bit of motion sickness, due to not being able to see a fixed point. If it would have been rough, it would've been a proper nightmare.
@psycomule51
@psycomule51 10 жыл бұрын
GBPaddling It does go flat but to have it for such a long period is unusual, having both coasts gives you options when it blows. We've done more on the south coast taking the fishing rods and getting some nice tight lines!

Tell me, where did you get the extension your Gopro is attached to? Great footage well worth watching. Holidayed in Cornwall so your trip brings back good memories. Thanks
@GBPaddling
@GBPaddling 10 жыл бұрын
North West Angling Centre, Hindley, nr Wigan, to be precise. It is actually a Keepnet pole for angling, it's light as a feather, and has an extension piece, making it around 6ft in length. It has a brass threaded end to enable a keepnet, or rod-holder to be attached. I simply bought a rod-holder attachment, and glued a plastic plate to it, and drilled a 6mm hole right through the Gopro mount, enabling the Gopro to be reversible, for those upward shots of the kayak. You could of course, just stick a Gopro mount to the plastic plate.

Tried to reply to your last comment, but it disappeared into Cyberspace, probably The Dark Web, ha ha. If you stop the video dead on 19mins, that is Hell's Mouth, and up there is a car park, I presume, as there is usually a few people peering over the edge. I think I saw a 'Hogie Wagon' there once doing Burgers and stuff, but don't quote me on this. The point being, that it may be prudent to eyeball the site from above first before you commit yourself. Take the coast road South West from Portreath, and it will be a couple of miles down the road. Alternatively, view the scene on Google Earth, or preferably, do both. Your biggest problem here will be the swell, the conditions you see in this video are extremely rare, normally it would be pounding surf here, if there is said surf, then underwater visibility will be non existent, and it will be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, there are some razor sharp, rusty edges on all these wrecks, and being flung about in powerful swell, in zero visibility would be nigh on suicide. In this video it was very near low water, at high water the wreck is covered, if you paddle from Portreath, then tides will not be a problem, but if you paddle from the Hayle end there is a bit of tide at Navax point and Godrevy Head, nothing too bad, but with a strong headwind added, it could be a struggle. Good luck, God loves a trier, but stay safe, it will be there another time for you, if it's bad on the day, it would take a very special day to do this safely, and getting such days in October will be a very tall order, let me know how you get on, I would love a return there myself.

GBPaddling thankyou for your reply and sorry for the time, i hope it wont be too bad but hey ho i love a bit of danger hahah. with this weather nothing is certain and yeah the waves would be very powerful in a windy day. cornwall is a wet and rainy place i was amazed on how beautiful the day of your trip was. im going there for 5 days and im going to other places too, i will see which day fits that trip best and probably drive from portreath to godrevy, if it looks good stop and check the wreck out but its not a rush i mean just being there is a good enough experience for me. anyway keep up the good work with the videos and thankyou once more.

I'm glad you didn't have that hairstyle, and that Burglar's jumper shown in your avatar, 'cos I'd have stayed ashore, ha ha, fuck me you never told me you was a Kajagoogoo fan, ha ha. Seriously, do you think it was better than Staffa? be careful, you'll upset Alan, who's Scotsman's ways have clearly rubbed off on you, no undercrackers on under your spraydeck and all, ha ha. It was all the more remarkable for me, as it bettered my previous trip here, which I thought couldn't be bettered!!
