Back in the 80's, someone asked the captain of the USS New Jersey what he would do if the Iranians fired a missile at his ship. His response was "I'd send the crew out to sweep the debris off the deck, and maybe send some to go over the side to touch up the paint."

I’m still fond of the proposed second refit for the New Jersey: replace the aft turret and helicopter deck with a VLS field and add a V-shaped, cantilevered flight deck around it that could launch and recover Harriers. They actually have a model of it in New Jersey’s officers’ mess and it is terrifying.
@Spendingryan3 ай бұрын
@@zaneroskoph7460 did you see (might be wrong) I think the US Navy thought about having the F-35 take off vertically from the USS Lewis B. Puller? Its a very large supply like ship with a huge central helicopter deck, its an "Expeditionary Mobile Base" ship type, although they renamed the type a few times, the F-35 engine was too much and would have damaged or melted the helicopter deck apparently.
@Mrdjs11332 ай бұрын
@zaneroskoph7460 The issue with removing a turret is finding enough weight to counter balance that removal. Realistically, it's not worth it to replace an entire turret, especially when there's so much reserve of buoyancy in the hull already to comparably add plenty more missiles. Also, aircraft fuel is bad to have on a ship that's intended to take damage. My favorite refit idea is to take off the rest of the 5"/38s, remove the super structure between the funnels, and add a full deck of VLS there. I'd also refit the aft to have an internal hangar for helicopter and a drone-deck. Add another mast over the aft funnel, and remove/rebuild the bridge to add more officers space and ro remove the weight of the comming tower for more missile systems elsewhere. I'd then replace every 5" director with insulated sea sparrows, and I'd look into the Royal Navy's Dragonfire system theyre testing out to further augment the Iowas AA defences. I think those, and some tweaks to the hull and generators that were done to similar ships would majorly help with overall reliability. If the navy gave me a $5bil per hull budget, then I'd also look into rehulling and reshaping the bow to more modern lines to improve efficiency. Ideally, I want them to keep their speeds up without having to cut into the hull to replace the boilers outright, as that would plausibly exceed a $5bil budget. If there's money to, I'd also automate as many of the reloding functions for the 16" guns as is possible to cut down on crew costs.

In 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, there was an incident where an Oliver Hazard Perry class Frigate was attacked by 3 Iraqi patrol boats. The Frigate engaged and destroyed all three, however, here is a true story that has likely never been heard. After hearing that the Frigate was engaged in what is referred to as Surface Action: Guns, the commander of USS Missouri (BB-63), Captain Albert Kaiss, requested permission to steer north from her gunnery box to engage in Surface Action: Guns, hoping to get the 16 inch and 5 inch guns involved in one of the last naval gunnery actions to date. The request was denied. I think it would be fantastic if you could recreate this engagement with just the Missouri, the OHP Frigate and the three Iraqi Patrol Craft....just to see what it would be like for the Missouri to fire upon the PCs. By the way, I served aboard the USS Missouri from March 1990 to March 1992, decommissioning her.

Thanks Cap! This game looks pretty awesome. As I was watching, it reminded me of the DCS version of this video where you were implementing the DCS-modded version of Aegis. You look at this video, where you're learning on an early release version as to how to equip and control your assets in the best way possible, and even with 1980's tech, this little CSG was arguably more deadly than the modern DCS assets in the DCS version. I guess I'd attribute that to this game/sim giving the CSG a bit more credit when it comes to targeting and piloting. Imagine how capable the modern CSG would be if you extrapolated the 1980's tech to 2020's tech. Unfortunately, I imagine this is the same scenario as DCS, where the developers feel they can only produce the desirable level of fidelity by using the equipment from an older era, where the specifications and technology are much more understood and less classified. It's fun either way, but I think most of us are also obsessed with what the latest and greatest is capable of. 😄

The 16 inch guns are not modelled accurately. In vietnam the US Navy would use the Battleships 16 inch guns to make emergency landing zones for helicopters. 1 shell would be enough to clear out about 300feet by 300 feet of tree in a box. A near miss by a 16 inch shell would likely capsize a small boat of that size.

the blast when a shell hits the water is significantly less compared to solid ground
@tylerouimette29343 ай бұрын
@meinfraulein380 it is sure. However a 16 inch shell sends a massive ploom of water 20+ feet in the air. A 16 inch round weighs about the same as a wolkswagen beetle. During operation hailstone at Truk Atoll In 1944 the Japanese destroyer Nowaki was straddled by 2 16 inch shells fired from Iowa and New Jeresy. Although the round missed being fired from 35 000 yards away, they fell on either side of thr destroyer. Although they didn't hit the destroyer the near miss from the 16 inch round caused massive splinter damage and casualties to the crew. The Nowaki was a Japanese destroyer nearly 400 feet long and displacing over 2500 tons and was damaged from a near miss. A small attack boat like the Iranians have would have a much worse time. Food for thought.
@_.Glennicus._2 ай бұрын
They aren't modeled correctly, and we may not see proper modeling within sea power for ages just due to a few factors 1. She'll reload. The guns return to reload elevation after every shot, about 4 or so seconds to lower to reload elevation from max, then reload times as fast as 14 seconds were recorded, making total time of reload at 24 to 26 seconds (calculations done using videos of the guns firing in a video one of the the 4 firing) . 2. We have the shells physics upon landing in water, as another comment mentioned, read theirs for details . 3. Armor: the All or Nothing scheme can make all the difference depending on where the missile hits, this is difficult to do as it requires armor penetration physics like other games

Theres no spare parts, and no shells or powder for them today, and the Navy doesnt even own them anymore, so its not very likely. Still... My favorite refit idea starts with taking off the rest of the 5"/38s, removing the super structure between the funnels, and adding a full deck of VLS there. I'd keep all three turrets. I'd then replace every 5" director with insulated sea sparrows, and I'd look into the Royal Navy's Dragonfire system they're testing out to further augment the Iowas AA defences. Is also develop a cheap saboted round, and a cheap HC smart-round for accurate infantry support, and I'd borrow existing systems in the Excalibur round for land-based Mk.777 artillery to save costs. I think those and some tweaks to the hull and generators that were done to similar ships would majorly help with overall reliability. If the navy gave me a $5bil per hull budget, then I'd also look into rehulling and reshaping the bow to more modern lines to improve efficiency. If there's money to, I'd also automate as many of the reloding functions for the 16" guns as possible to cut down on crew costs. The goal is to have the ultimate lotoral ship, that wouldnt need a fleet of escorts and would have lower operating costs, but they'd also be capable of being a flagship in a fleet, and they'd use theyr stealth-less nature to attract enemy fire away from the rest of the fleet, while being abke to defend against that AA threat.

Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, the Iowa class expending over 1,000 16 inch rounds in the final engagement in the video doesn’t make any sense at all. In engagements during the 80’s and Gulf War, they were expending far fewer projectiles in entire conflicts. For example: during Desert Storm, the USS Wisconsin (BB-64) expended 528 16 inch projectiles. And that included at least one engagement against 4 boghammer sized combatants where she expended 12 high-explosive rounds, taking out three of them (the fourth retreated). So, if one goes by that information, along with the other ordnance expended in this video and the Iowa should’ve fired less 16 inch projectiles
