The ones I can think of were the wives of ship captains, who didn't have kids yet. To be fair though, running across half a dozen or more opera singers on a whaling vessel would also be incredibly rare.

For those wondering, the reason Liudas Mikalauskas (the bass singer) is plugging his right ear. It's easier to hear what note you're singing. Deep notes are difficult to sing loud.

That's by far the most beautiful version of the Wellerman. This mix of different voices from deep bass over the stunning tenor to the crystal-clear soprano and finally the angelic treble at the very end is so extraordinary beautiful. It makes me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's a shame that the whole thing lasts only one minute.

Actually he doesn't have a earpiece. Singing a loud bass is extremely difficult. So he's plugging his ear with his finger. That helps him to hear the notes he's singing
