Almost to the day exactly one year ago my research team found a plastic drinking straw embedded in a male olive ridley sea turtle's nostril ( • Sea Turtle with Straw ... ). We removed it and hopefully eased his suffering and improved his quality of life.
This past 9th of August 2016, my research team once again encountered a sea turtle in distress.
We found an exhausted olive ridley female swimming close to our research boat and she was dragging a huge bulk of discarded fishing net behind her. Parts of it were wrapped around her throat and had already started to cut into her flesh.
We took her onboard our boat, cut-off the net, and disinfected her cuts with iodine. Due to the knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, we released the female back into the water since she seemed otherwise healthy and strong.
As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our research is approved by the US IACUC and is conducted under research permits issued by the Costa Rican government, MINAE/SINAC and CONAGEBio.
At this point, I would like to thank again everyone that donated to my GoFundMe Campaign during the past year! Without you, this field season 2016 wouldn't have been possible and we wouldn't have been to the right time at the right place to help. Thank you!

GHOST NETS
"Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been left or lost in the ocean by fishermen. These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, including the occasional human diver. Acting as designed, the nets restrict movement, causing starvation, laceration and infection, and suffocation in those that need to return to the surface to breathe. " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_net

Do you thank the imaginery of our ancestors, who had gods because they didn't have knowledge? Or do you thank the surgeon who studied and learned about the human body for years? Well without the surgeon you would surely be dead. God can't or won't save you.

@@lukas-kevynmuller6697 Lol as I read more is getting more and more comical... What knowledge do we possess? Some basic math or physics? That's what you're so proud of? We are fucking destroying our environment, in 50 years there won't be anyone left if we continue like that and you talk of our knowledge and boldness? We can't remember back to our history properly in time for 2k years, heck even if we move 100 years back some parts of the true story has been bent for different interests and what not. If we manage somehow to create AI, the intelligence of the machine will forego in no time leaving us in our dumb little world we think we know. Until the dumb scientists has to test on animals, until we are unable to find a reasonable energy source, until people starve doe to corruption, until we can't control the birth rate, until people die doe to diseases, until we are unable to understand most of the communications of animals, until programmers are unable to understand what and how aka based on what knowledge their AI's are communicating with each other, until we know batsh*t of different dimensions or planes, only that they exist (as a result of 2 recent study with positive, but only indirect proof), until we are unable to re-create or build a logical and working theory with proven methods of how ancients built the pyramids or moved 100k tonnes of stones horizontally or vertically like it was nothing, don't dare to talk about knowledge. Do you have any proof of what you are saying that there is no God, or is just empty words? I bet is the latter.

Tim Tam What do you mean by that or are trying to be smart with a meaningless yet seemingly overrated and overglorified phrase? We still need those nets to catch fish to feed ourselves. What else can we do? We need to be grateful there are at least people who save the turtles, not leave them alone like most others.
@timtam6906
@timtam6906 7 жыл бұрын
No we actually don't need those nets and we don't need to catch as many fish as we do. It would be best if we didn't actually for the fish and the people. We are polluting the water so much (oil) and that goes into the fish and seaweed and then we eat it. Does that seem like a good idea? We eat way too much meat than is physically healthy as it is. People need to stop cutting their nets and leaving them and at least try and do something when they lose them. Maybe you are having a bad day or whatever but don't make up some retarded "we need to catch fish in mass to feed ourselves" when it is actually just bad for the economy and hurting the environment. Not to mention how much of that fish is wasted.
@saleem2991
@saleem2991 7 жыл бұрын
Tim Tam What about for the people who live on shores? Plants are not enough to feed the large Japanese population, so they hunt tons of fish. Nordic people have to eat fish oftentimes, their lands are covered in ice during some seasons. The biggest fish consumers in Nordic countries and Japan are in fact the healthiest people in the world. It isn't as easy to cut the fish industry. We can be more careful with nets and oil and prevent a few accidents, but is is as little far as we can go.
@timtam6906
@timtam6906 7 жыл бұрын
Sale Em those countries most likely dont have an economic monopoly over the fishing industry. They hunt fish in various portions and not in thousands and thousands by one group at the same time. The Japanese eat way less meat than places like America do all the same.
@TheMerlika

but japan has the practice of cutting fins off sharks and tossing the sharks back in water to drown with no fins. They are hardly a shining example just because they eat less meat

Actually I think the turtle stopped struggling as soon as it was flipped over, since turtles (and most other reptiles) do not have a diaphram, so it had to work a bit harder to breathe. Unfortunately they had to put iodine on the cuts, so they had to keep the turtle in that position to clean it. You can see the turtle trying to flip itself over during this part, and they flip the turtle back upright as soon as they're done with the underneath of the neck so it can breathe easier again.

@TheBurnknight

its more then likly a passive net. where u leave it over a few days then later to go pick it up. what probably happen was that the floats broke or something like that. made the net flow away. maybe the turtle swam into the net and got loose . but tearing a chunk away from the net. nets are really expensive, so leaving them to go to waste is not really something people do. i dont really expect u to understand that this is more then likly a poor country where they cant really be as anal about the enviorement as countrys from the west. i say that based on that the nets, they look to be made out of some kind of crude rope, wich is very uncommon in more developed countrys, where we use nylon wire or strong fishing string. unless they are fishing for sharks with the rope net.
